No wonder games like Grand Theft Auto, Ultima Online, Oblivion/Morrowind, Second Life have been so popular.
Give us some structure but only when we choose, but most importantly give us a TON of small things to do that are fun.
We are very different from each other and each of us like different things.
Don't penalize for taking "bad" actions. Because in truth there are no "bad" actions.
PVP should always be FFA with of limit cities. Just because you can kill someone and loot them doesn't mean you will. People will align with their "kind" PKers will align with PKers and the Good with the Good.
Why is the lore forced upon us? There is nothing more frustrating than finding a nice person on the "other" side and having to be automatic enemies.
Items are the last thing MMO's should be about. Can you imagine playing GTA with the "Pistol of DOOM" You wouldn't take any chances in fear of losing it.
Skill trees and Classes are the worst. There is nothing worse than being forced to pick a class when you don't know any and feeling the Nerf stick once in a while. If I want an invisible, healing, plate wearing mage, why can't I? Skills are answer here.

Yeah rpgs can't have plots...
Look at your ps3 and xbox rpgs are they sandbox?
See RPG do not have to be be sandbox at all as long as you make the flow of the game and the plot intersting... and that is really what is missing. Look at wow who are you fighting ? NO ONE.
There has to be good and bad dudes (or enemies and allies) and you need to push this expirence.
Basicly mmos atm lack storytelling ability.

i agree with u! i give u 10 points for the good thoughts :P

i think that we as gamers should decide on who is this so called "evil" and who isnt. a true sandbox game we decide who is our enemies and who isnt. it should be that way instead of having it pre laid out for us so we can all say ORCS ARE EVIL. HUMANS ARE GOOD!! when in reality its not always that way but games like wow make it seem so

Completely agree with the OP.
Alot of us have had enough with the rpg style games, especially mmo's. SWG at first had it going in the right direction, course then they revamped and the game lost a good amount of players.
Even if in an rpg game the storline is great, you can only have a limited amount of fun and creativity with that storyline. Sandbox games give you alot more possibilities, and allow your character and friends if online to influence the direction of the game.
Hopfully in the future a good sandbox mmo will be made again..till then we're stuck with what we've been getting these past years.
My 2 cents anyways.
Yeah, just because your buddies are Orcs you are automatically bad. Doesn't make sense.

110% agree
Whilst i agree 123.7% with your statement, some people do not like being free. Take for instance prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, They love it there! Why else would they not have the right to Habeus Corpus? Have free medical care, 3 square meals a day, A little torture now and again. They are still better off than some poor families. Trailing off a bit.... sorry.... Just came back from the zoning offices and i had Fox News forced into my face every way i looked so i am incredibly angry and feeling happy im liberal and aware. Anyways This concept may not apply to the majority of gamers who may or may not be sick of linear gameplay. Some cannot comprehend what it is like outside of the box since pre-(shudder) wow there were a handful of gamers comparitivly who played mmo's. And a handful of them who played Ultima.
Since I myself enjoyed UO immensley untill British sold out, and it became a item fest, and also enjoy sandbox Rpgs like Gothic and Oblivion, am all for sandbox mmo's. Sandbox with optional linear paths wouldn't bother me too much either. But rules and regulations in games annoyes me incredibly. I want to kill the baby, eat some baby stew, throw babies through windows, make 2 babies fight to the death with morningstars.... Carried away. But you get the idea. Housing, massive worlds, many stories i can jump into, the ability to affect the world around me.
In the dev corner i heard a great idea about things that could be implimented into a sandbox to give it life. An example was that a city is in constant danger by a (generic monster) Orc population. It keeps growing, building defences, slowlly sending squads and eventually an army against a city unless its population is culled by players. Or perhaps players could ally with the orcs to bring the city down, or just let it grow to have a good fight. Simple such things to bring the world around to life.
Ideas like these implimented into a sandbox game would increse the draw for me, as you can see in my quote Darkfall is my momentary wet dream. I dont care how long it takes as long as it comes out eventually. The updates seem promising. Dont bother shouting vapor, you have no credibility any more you trolls. But if its sandbox you want, pray with me... Darkfall *chant* Darkfall *chant*

Currently playing: Planetside, Americas Army.
Praying to Zeus for: Darkfall.
It is not the lack of a sandbox feeling, but the lack of a coherent theme / story that ties the world together.
The success of games like Everquest, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Final Fantasy XI and many, many other games prove you're wrong. Sand box is NOT the only answer. in fact, its quite the opposide.
well u might be longing for some darkfall i cant wait for AoC thats my wetdream

You mean that all of those games combined are bigger than Grand Theft Auto? GTA brought the Sand Box concept to light. Ultima Online had the concept down before any MMO were MMO's.Everquest became popular ONLY because it combined "ground breaking" 3D Graphics with a constant world and longevity.
Sandbox is kind of cool, but I'm also a fan of guided story lines. I think a game should have skills, and also levels, but no pre-set good v. bad. Say some guy wants you to go out and kill 10 wigits, well what if I would rather go out, get paid by the wigits and kill the dude? This, on top of different fractions of players (sort of an RvR thing) would be my dream MMO.
edit: can't type
followup: I don't like games like GTA because there's no real benefit to following a story line. If I'm progressing the story, I want rewards. I want guided along the story too, because in games like GTA and Oblivion, it's too easy for me to get side tracked.
Not to cause a storm here, but what about Eve?
Agree with first poster.. MMORPG's should be unlimited, unrestricted, and endless.

That's not what we're talking about.
That's not what we're talking about.
We weren't talking about Sandbox games? At least, in my opinion, eve is somewhat a sandbox game. I was asking others opinions on eve.
Sorry sand boxes do not work, how many instances of MMO failures does it take to get it through your thick skull that no limits = major MMO disaster waiting to happen.
The developers know that, hence no one at this point in time will be dumb enough to make one.
That's not what we're talking about.
Yes we are we are talking about SANDBOX GAMES.EvE is one no doubt about ti and a successfull one too.

That was the main reason why I asked about it =x. I think of Eve as a sandbox game, but throughout this thread, I didn't see a word of it. Was kinds of curious on other's opinions about eve as a Sandbox game.
Can you have levels in a true sandbox PVE game?
lets say it was a GTA online version and you run around shooting cops all day, ok great now you're lvl 872 and all the cops fall over at the touch of your pinky. But... sandbox so you don't really want to create easy and hard areas.
Maybe the next breakthrough then will be sandbox'able' PvE game. It seems pretty easy to sandbox with PvP, which is cool and all, but to get the clueless about gameplay ladies that want to lead a guild to play a sandbox game, maybe you need the next breakthrough to be sandbox PvE.

if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it.
Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro
if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end

A good bunch of things can be implemented to keep a sandbox interesting. I hate the linear progression, the closed classes, the closed factions and so on.
I will pray Jove too, for DarkFall.
It is a question of fangs.
SWG sandbox was awesome.
That was a well-developed sandbox system that worked well. You could combine combat proffesions and be proficient at both, and use their skills together.
Two crafting proffessions, one crafting one combat, one entertainment one crafting (whatever you want!).
As much as I like Sandbox design, I must ask, what's the question? (that is, What is the question that Sandbox is the only answer to?)
MMO doesn't have to design with sandbox design, nor does it have to stay with the level/class format. It all depends on what exactly does the developers want to do with their game. Sure, sometimes level/class format may be simplier and easier to fix/balance/etc..., but that doesn't make it better than sandbox format. (it's a pro for level/class, but not necessary a con for sandbox.)
As for the sandbox PvE, you would have to have the game world evolve with your character. Such as, if you kill the same mobs over and over, it should get harder to do what you do (but not to the point of killing yourself all the time)...
Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR
Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

Aside from the fact I think it is absolutely rediculous that you compare non - mmorpg genres to MMORPG genres, there are many, MANY linear franchises that are more popular then the games you mentioned. Oh it works for this genre, so it MUST work for MMO's as well. No matter how much spin you try to add, in the mmorpg genre, Linear games beat the living crap out of sandbox games. Its not the only way to go, period, end of discussion.
Everquest became popular only because of its 3D Graphics? Ehm..No. Just No.
Everquest does owe a huge chunk of its popularity to the fact it was the first real 3d mmorpg.
Als on the subject of sandobx and linear. Why does it have to be one or the other ? Why not offer the gamers a choice. Problem with most mmos is that you don't have one. Either you have a 1-X grind or you are left out in the wilderness to wonder what to do.
Single player games have alot to teach us. Take Elder Scrolls for instance. That is a perfect example of how a game can be made and be as linear or as open ended as the user decides it to be.
