Original Guild Wars; anyone still playing?

metal134metal134 Member Posts: 4

I bought the original Guild Wars a few months after irt first came out and stopped playing about a year ago, give or take.  i don't have any of the expansions; just the original game.  Is anyone still playing it?  And how do the expansions work?  I understand that they are somewhat stand alone, do they work together in any sort of way?  And if I were to get one (I'm not sure if I will or not) what might be a good one for me?  So you know what I'm looking for; I'm not a hardcore player, I just play a little here and a little there and I don't really care one way or the other about PvP.  I'd like to find one where I could play sporadically and wouldn't have to stay too commited.

I'm guessing that you have prophecies then, as thats the first chapter and i guess the original...  however, even with both Factions and Nightfall (the other two chapters) your still playing the same game as they are just part of a whole

Anyway, yes, people still play PvE quite a lot (more than PvP actually) and depending on your play style (do you prefer soloing or teaming up with others?) there are still plenty of things to do...

Where did you actually gt to in the chapter?  What do you need to do? are you in a guild?

You seem to know quite a bit about Guild Wars (and look at your Xfire, you've played it a hell of alot), and I was wondering if I could pick your brain about PvE.

I didn't actually know there was any PvE element to Guild Wars, only the battleground-style PvP.  Ok I admit I remember reading somewhere that you have to quest(?) to get some materials to get your armour from vendors, but apart from that what is there?  I'm intrigued as I may also go back and give Guild Wars a shot if there's something more to it than I first thought!

Hey man,

I just recently bought GW as my gf is playing and there is absolutely no MMORPG about at the moment worth paying a sub for. From what i have seen (only have prophecies campaign) there are LOADS of players about. Even the starting area is packed.

You need to make a roleplaying character to do the quests and unlock skills and items for use in the pvp part. RPG character start at lvl1 and by questing and killing monsters you gain items and skills and xp. Just like an mmo except the questing areas are instanced. When you compare it to WoW i dont understand why anyone would pay for wow. GW rules!

Ahh, WoW player huh?  Battlegrounds is a near complete rip of the Guild Wars style of PvP, but yeah, there is a monumental amount more than just PvP

Ok, depending on the chapter you have and started your character in, it takes between 5 hours (Factions) and a few days (Prophecies) of casual play to get to lvl 20...  once your at lvl 20, forget it, it means absolutely sweet F*** all, absolutely nothing and the game becomes a team based action adventure online title...  If your thinking of GW as an MMO free to Play WoW, walk away now, its not

However, if you have people to play with and your lvl 20, there is still loads to do and soon, even more with the first Expansion ye of the North being released next month

Getting Armour is fairly easy and you can buy the materials for it from material traders, however most armour arts have prestige/elite versions, we call them 15k versions as most cost 15k a piece, compared to the 1/1.5k per peice for normal artworked armour and it really does come down to which you prefer the look of and wether you are willing to pay more for better looking, but exactly the same rating armour or not...  Casters have 60 AL, Rangers, dervishes and Assasins have 70 AL and Warriors and Paragons have 80 AL

Same goes for weapons, a max damage Short sword is exactly the same as a max damage Crystaline or Dead Sword, the difference is just the mods and inscriptions you add to them yourself and the artwork/model of the sword and that goes for all weapons:

Weapon types

Weapon type One-handed Two-handed
Martial Weapons
Melee
Ranged
Spellcasting weapons
Spellcasting
Off-hand items
Off-hand

Hope that helps

Yeah, Prophecies is what I have.  I am in a guild, but again, I haven't played in a year, so for all I know, the guild doesn't exist anymore.  As far as how far I got, I don't even remember.   It's been so long.  If I start playing again, I might just start from scratch because I can't remember what quests I've done and how far I've gotten.   And to your other question; I prefer soloing, but I like to team up as well (it wouldn't be an MMORPG without doing at least some teaming up!).

Prophecies are still much active for PVE. I have been playing though the Roleplay episode for some for month now (Im a causal player) and its still easy to get groups for mission. Sometime it can be a little hard to find somebody to the desert mission or ring of fire. But I am playing on a english district. Later I am gonna try Nightfall

there are even more people playing prophecies nowadays cuz eye of the north is comin out. get the full storyline so they'll understand eye of the north

• hisero13hisero13 Member Posts: 10

Do you have to play through Factions and Nightfall to understand Eye of the North?   I'll probably buy the other 2 and play through them also.

"there are even more people playing prophecies nowadays cuz eye of the north is comin out. get the full storyline so they'll understand eye of the north"

"Do you have to play through Factions and Nightfall to understand Eye of the North? I'll probably buy the other 2 and play through them also."

You don't have to get either Factions or Nightfall to understand Eye of the North. But you should find a way to get yourself to the Deldrimor War Camp in Prophecies (it's the "gateway" to Sorrow's Furnace), and do the Sorrow's Furnace quests you find there. Here's what I posted in another thread:

OK, having revisited one of the Sorrow's Furnace missions - (Tome of the Rubicon, the one you get from High Priest Alkar - I have a new "take" on the identity of The Great Destroyer, and this time I'm willing to bet on it.

First, here's a transcript from the dialogue of that mission straight from the "mouth" of High Priest Alkar:

"Long ago, the Great Dwarf took from his greatest foe the one thing that gave him his power...He took from him his name, sealing it away until the time of their final battle.

"To ensure the name was unspeakable to all but the Great Dwarf, the name was sealed within the Rubicon. There are few left with the knowledge and power to open this tome.

"The day will come when the great Dwarf and the Great Destroyer will do battle, but the time is not yet right for such a meeting. If the true name of either is spoken aloud, it would mean the end of the world as we know it. We must not allow that which is unknown to again become known. Not now.

"The Great Destroyer is reputed to be everything the Great Dwarf is not...Evil, malicious, and greedy to the core."

Before telling you whom I now think the Great Destroyer is, just a quick note on Sorrow's Furnace. I think Sorrow's Furnace will be the new "hub" that allows travel to all parts of Tyria, Cantha, and Elona for two simple reasons:

1. It's centrally located.

2. Ever notice how there are certain gates in SF that are guarded but have no apparent ingress or egress? (These are guarded by the level 28 Furnace Guardians.) I believe these gates - once EoTN is released - will become passable, leading us to new areas through which to explore. And because they are already underground, they seem like the logical choice for "extensions" into the expanding underground world that we will see in EoTN.

I don't know if the devs were thinking of GW:EN when they released the SF update, but if so, the lore, missions and quests in SF seem to foreshadow the coming story in GW:EN in a big way. People who criticize GW for having no PvE or a poor story have never played their way to SF.

Now, for my "take" on the final "big boss" of GW:EN. Since the story takes us deep underground (a la Sorrow's Furnace), and since anyone who has played in the Underworld or Fissure of Woe for anytime at all has encountered the shadow armies there, I predict here and now that the final boss in GW:EN will be none other than Menzies himself, who is - after all - an overlord of the Underworld, where most of GW:EN will take place.

Anyone else agree or disagree and why?

In any event, we'll know in just a few short weeks.

P.S. The reason I'm more convinced than ever that the Great Destroyer is Menzies is because no one has ever seen or battled Menzies himself, just his shadow minions.

Next, the identity of the Great Dwarf... :)

That is good to hear, I still want to play the other 2 but would like the option of going to the third one.
