Earned peg-legs and hooks?

Mabe I misunderstood what I read but I don't like the sound of that...

I thought that it was gonna be doable at creation to have those customizations, defining your character, having to earn having your hand or leg cut off sounds kinda stupid IMO.  Dunno we will see where this goes I guess...

Mabe losing a fight or something like that I can understand, but as a reward ......   Liked it better as a way to define your character.

Dunno mabe they are planning on useing them as a type of weapon or something that you can earn later in game... need more info.

Still looking forward to this game, good luck PotBS.

my understanding is that pegs, hooks, etc are earned rewards through quests/achievments/battles or somehting. But, I don't think you HAVE to apply the "accessory" to your avatar if you don't want to.

the best thing about it is that you won't have so many amputees at game launch... because you know a lot of people would go for it and be like this guy:

I'm posting this one because this is the funniest guy on Family Guy

     Haha, funny vids.

Yeah I can see a bunch of players with them too. I personally will be a naval officer. Keeping that riff raff in check.   So this in particular dosen't affect me either way ATM.

Just thought it was a bad step towoard a more WoWish game style, of dangleing the treat in front of you to keep you playing...    This game from the looks and sound of it dosen't need that to be successfull.

Could be the first signs of SOE sticking their hands in too... dunno but I am watching to see how it goes.

I just want this to be a good game and will certainly be playing either way, just hope they don't get silly with the hooks, by hooks I mean lame attempts to force people into playing/paying longer.

I know that you will have ships and stuff for that, big things, but do we need the cheezy things like hook hands and peg-legs? And whats next on that list?

Just a lil bit concerned is all.  All that said, again, I am still looking forward to PotBS.

What? Sometime ago peg legs et al had to be 'earned', long before SOE came in the picture. Because they go back to being 'earned' instead of something at creation, it must be SOE? Right...

I dont think most ppl will go all-out just to wear an eyepatch lol. And if they want to spend all their time getting that leg n hook, then fine by me. I doubt it will be a month after month grind a 'la WoW to get the hook n leg anyways.

Also I can think of loads of crappier quest rewards so I dont see a problem really making hook a reward again...

I am not a SOE hater, I play all their games off and on, but I do have a brain and can notice strange activities.   FLS steping back from their decision to have a CoH type character creation, is one of these strange activities.   Much like Sigil rushed to their release unfinished...I doubt that they were anxious to release a game they knew wasn't ready, I am sure they had pressure from their backers...    Just like I have a good idea that SOE wants some more player "hooks" to keep players playing longer, it is after all a minor change that FLS wouldn't feel too threatened by making and would please SOE's money hungry ideas.  Just "seems" obvious.

Mabe it is a coincidence, but like I said, I am keeping an eye on the changes, and will be playing either way.  To put it another way, I am just interested in the behind the scenes activities of getting a MMO off the ground. And it seems that most game makers have to bow down to the money bags more often than not.

I hope it is not the case, and that FLS just sticks to their guns, I believe that their game will do just fine without any SOE involvement, beyond publishing.

Wait, what? Because they've gone back to having something happen to your character during a quest/quest chain - the original idea, something you 'earn' - and you having an option to get a peg leg, hook or whatever from it, it must be evil SOE are putting pressure on them so they can make more money? Right.

I'm sure they didn't really think that might be a better idea that having everyone enter the game with two hooks, three wooden legs and two eyepatches.

I know which way I - and going from the occasional official forum chatter about the subject, many others too - prefer. Not that I really care about cosmetics but if it brings a bit more fun/humour to a quest for a tiny amount of work, then i'm all for it.

but I do have a brain

    Kudos.

That's been something we've planned, and talked about, for something like 2 years.  So unless SOE invented a time machine and went back in time to make me think that was a good idea and then erased my memory so I'd think it was my idea, it has nothing to do with SOE.

Tangent: I find all the SOE-meddling speculation pretty funny.  I handed out about 80423179857 business cards a E3, including one to every single SOE person there in the press room with us.  I still haven't gotten a single email from anyone I saw at E3.  And I certainly haven't heard from anyone at SOE.  In fact, I think I know like two SOE people by name at this point, and neither one of them has talked to me about design.

So unless, again, they're using their secret alien technology to implant ideas in my brain, they've had, and continue to have, zero influence over the design.

They have had a lot of influence over the marketing, and thank god for that, because those guys are damn good at it.

I will say again I am not a SOE hater... I have station pass as we speak.  I play (all) their games off and on , and yeah I was there for all the SWG mishaps... and like I said when your game releases I will have it and be playing it too reguardless.

I was just genuinly concerned about the sudden change from a COH type char creation (that yall said you liked too and was very successfull), to dangleing a reward in the players face to keep them playing(that alot of players are sick of). Just confusing because I can tell this game dosen't need that type of thing to be successfull...

Could have just set it up so you can't go over board with the hooks and peg legs... Like only one peg leg and one hook. (hell if they want to look cheezy let em.)

But I guess do understand trying to keep it under controll atleast a little bit.(so the game dosen't look cheezy, like the guy in that video above,LOL funny vid too)  Could we get some more information though, on how they would be earned and what if any bonuses they will have, as well as if they will be used as a weapon or just cosmetic? If it would not be too much of a spoiler that is.

Thanks for taking the time to post here, shows alot about how dedicated the FLS devs are, gives me great encouragement.

We're still mostly like CoH.  There are still lots of slots, and lots of things to go in each, and lots of colors to be set on each item.  Gazillions of possibilities.  What we've done is to make a few of the "special" things items you have to earn, or class specific.  Doing specific quests just unlocks those items in the tailor shop, similarly to how at level 20 you could do the quest to unlock your cape in CoH.   Pegs and hooks are like that.

It's pretty funny, actually.  Early on in the process we had only 4 "lower body" choices.  Left peg, Right peg, Both pegs, and no pegs.   And the "random" creation button didn't have any weighting at all, so 3 out of 4 characters had a peg.  And similarly 3 out of 4 had a hook.   So only 1 in 16 characters wasn't missing *something*.  The prosthetics shop made a mint...

Good to hear.   And thanks for the info, really looking forward to this game, can hardly wait to play it.  I've done wore all my old pirate games out again in anticipation.

Its a great ideal, u have to earn cool things instead of getting them from the start.  Gives a reason to play and shows ur a achievements.

something that Rusty mentioned in the Gamespot interview

getting a hook is more than just for looks.  when you choose to get a hook later in the game, it opens up the "hook" school of fighting (when you think about it, this makes sense, because you couldn't really play florentine or use a pistol if you had a hook)

Just to be clear, hook fighting isn't in yet.  We plan to add it after release, but we need to make sure it's tuned and balanced against the other fighting schools and we don't have time to do that now.   It'll happen, but not on day 1.
