There just isn't enough creativity and innovation to generate interest among the MMO vets. The  industry continues to grow and developers seem content to rehash old ideas and cater to the younger, less experienced player base. Gameplay is ever increasingly focussed on virtual materialism. I think this hurts the social possibilities of MMO's. In older games I made friends; in recent ones I made only acquaintances...

AHHHH! In that paragraph you summed up what I've been trying to make a point to SOOO many people in the past few months. Thank you, Thank you.

    Keep f*king rockin!

If I get bored of MMOs I just go back to playing D2, and once I'm bored with that I go back to MMOs. Now if they only came out with an MMO that played like D2...

And there I was thinking that I was the only one! I have been playing MMORG for about 6 years but I gave them up about 6 months ago. I keep my eyes on this site for the next -I was going to say big- interesting thing to come along. Still have my fingers crossed!

That leaves me with a sunken feeling, as they have always in the past provided me with sheer amounts of joy at even the prospects of playing them, and I would do what I could to spend each spare hour in 'another world'.

These days though, only WAR can raise my excitement levels, but even those levels are not what they used to be.

What's going on... am I growing up?

Are MMORPG's just too boring now?

I always loved the idea of humans in another world populated by humans, from RPG's to FPS to Sports games, I needed that human element to compete against.

And i loved RPG"s, and so started with MUDS, then moved onto my first Graphical MMORPG, Ragnarok Online (the beta) and countless others after that, with the most memorable being World of Warcraft, as i Signed up just as the game was launched so i got to level at a pace with everyone else.

Years have gone by, and MMORPG's just don't seem to excite me as they used to.  Here's hoping it's just a slump.

    I wonder...

I'm in the same position as you are buddy. Ive been playing MMORPG for around 6-7 years now, EQ for 4 of them years. From EQ i went to WoW for a year and a half, absolutely loved it... probably because of the PvP. From there on nothing seems to interest me but WAR. Waiting for WAR is a bleeding nightmare.

Ive decided to play a few "normal" games until WAR. Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 3 etc.. that type. From the games i have played in the past, in my opinion the only game you may enjoy that is released is EQ2. Forget the PvP server, apparently its just gank gank gank with twinks.

Whatever you do, dont go back to the MMORPG that you enjoyed the most, otherwise your opinion may change a second time round, keep the good memories

    Goodluck buddy.

I think most of mmorpg's players like the idea of being in another world. Becouse of that we have the need of find a good mmorpg. You dont need to be a roleplayer to like that idea. We like to log and feel this world and this character like something part of you. But, all mmorpgs are, nowadays, all the same. I think most of the peeps getting bored of mmorpgs just need a new feel. We need to feel we can change our world. We need to feel is "our" world. I have the idea of a mmorpg, in wich the day one, the new players log in and there is nothing, only the ground, the grass, the trees and thats all. And then, players will need to create the all. I have the idea of a mmorpg without scenariaos, ona day you log and you find some trees, the next day they are gone, with player created countrys, without npc vendors (except for the ones hired by players), completely player created: economy, diplomacy, art (yeah, art, you should be able as a crafter to define the shape of the things you make)... all player made. But i dont think we have the technology to do that. So going to the topic: I think people get bored of mmorpgs becouse we dont have that, they are not persistent world, they are online games. They must be fun like games, but reals like worlds.

    My two cents.

As long as a game kepts me dreaming...no matter what it is.

To dream in a game I needs the following:

    - The prospect to be top notch, the best, whatever, you get it...so accepting subpar gear?  Forget it, put that idea into your @$$ and turn till it bleed.  I am not a 4 years old, but I will not accept been subpar.

    - I must have more stuff to achieve...or more stuff to achieve on other characters.

    - Actually enjoys earning my stuff in game...tradeskills have a serious concerns about been tedius and not fun.  Raiding and PvP are for mofos and a bad idea, bad design, bad thinking.  So, would soloing and grouping bring the above points?

How is an UNLIMITED LEVELS fan a newbie?  I am more hardcore then any weakling that settle behind a level cap.

I can accept a level cap, but don't replace my gameplay (unlimited levels) with something lame and uncalled for (raiding or PvP).  An ending is fine...or neverending of the gameplay that is popular and get the players in game in the first place (grouping).  A level cap protects the casuals...but when you favorise a minority group of casuals (PvPers or Raiders) instead of the real hardcores (unlimited levels), you make a bad mistake.
