Battletech as an MMO.

I don't know about all of you but there are countless universe's/lore's in which a really good MMO can be born.

What I am tired of is countless MMo's reiventing the wheel, using the same old formula or worse still trying to make a clone of WoW. The other thing I am tired of is the sheer number of fanyasy style MMO's out there not offering anything new with Sci-Fi MMO's in short supply....

I've been a fan of Battletech now for a number of years and I cannot believe that it has not been made into a MMO by now.

I can imagine it being a hugely immersive universe and one which could increment on for quite a period of time.

5 Houses all vying for control. Mercenary units that can be hired and deployed as necessary. Unlimited ways to PvP. Mechs. Moving away from classes and allowing a pilot to train for a different type and allow the pilot to change the Mech they drive. AeroFighters and Ground infantry support and then there is the Clans....

For those who know of the Battletech universe, how good do you think it could be and how much would you derely love to see it made?

It would fair the same way as Auto Assault as having a small gathering of followers.

You must realize that most people want to be a character and not something impersional that you can't relate to.

But the Battletech franchise is pretty large so I would think that it might peak at 300k subs after three or more years after launch or maybe not.

Think Eve in mechs but on ground and with graphics. Sounds good.

Yeah, when you put it like that.

I mean a quarter of a million people wants to be spaceships so why not?

Rather nasty to develop as a MMO, I recon. PvP it would have to be something like Planetside with Infantry/vehicles from the BT-universe (imagine a dropship full of Davion invasion troops on the deceleration burn attacked by kurita aerospace fighter wings... landing damaged and unloading cargo to conquer a mech facility, while fighting off the defenders mech force...yummie.)

PvE/PvP: unlimited opportunities, but rather limited number of distinct things to do, attack, defend, recon, hack and hold, steal something. The whole clan invasion would make a good storyline, but I would rather play the clans than fight them as NPCs

Balancing would be a hard nut, too. Infantry only really has a chance against Mechs when using elemental armor. aerospace fighters, tanks, turrets, you name it.

Character development and FPS combat. Ground combat vs. space combat. Fighter vs. battleships.

Server load. The Planetside server cluster once ranked in the TOP500 supercomputers worldwide.

Well, as much as I would like some  big publisher to develop it in it's whole dimension, it won't happen anytime soon. As long as WoW-style gets the cash, at least.

I would actually hope that if this was to be developed that you would still have a normal player character as normal and can learn to pilot different mechs. If you decide to change mechs you either buy one or request a new one so you would still have a character which you could relate to...

Think about going to Outreach to find your Merc unit a new contract or battling out on the game world of Solaris VII...

There was one already, but EA killed it. It was pretty fun, but the battles weren't that big.

I would love a very thorough online Battletech world.  Mech combat would have to be only one facet of the game, rather then the entire game.   I think life in the Battletech universe is a fantastic sci-fi setting for an MMO...

Think of it as kindof like PotBS, where you have a PC for some game aspects, and when you are in a mech you ARE the mech.  It would be neat to have part of the game be your life as an individual and not just as a mechwarrior.

All of the existing factions would make for great PvP... could be sandbox style with some people just concentrating on being a great mechwarrior, and others trying to conquer the galaxy by commanding armies....

OOooooohhh!!!! and instead of traditional leveling.. make it ranking up..... you start as a lowly infantryman... work your way up to either pilot and then mechs.. then bigger and bigger mechs.  Elementals could be worked in too, but as we know elementals are born into their trade.. so that would probably have to be selected at character creation and Im not sure how to work the progression there.

To do this right would be an enormous undertaking and therefore a big risk.. so It probably will never happen or be done in a very streamlined, narrow perspective so..... here I go daydreaming about perfect games that will never exist again =)

EA killed a fun game?  No way!  I just don't believe it.
