I've heard rumors that open beta for eq2 is coming out sometime in july.... does anyone know if thats true or not?

It's just rumors, until Moorgard states otherwise. It amazes me how things get started when Moorgard never states these things.

They have not even started closed beta yet...lol
If I had to guess I would say late August at BEST for an open beta. Closed betas usually last 2-4 months.

Closed beta is supposed to start in July. Open beta is highly unlikely to ever happen. The download size of the game will be huge, and I am sure there were enough beta applications for them to chose as many people as they need to stress the servers without an open beta.
Open betas are just to throw a massive amount of players at the servers and the game systems for load testing and last minute looks with large numbers of game functions happening all at once.
The developers won't bother to dig thru or even process the remaining list of not yet used regeistered beta tester emails when they can just open the floodgates to the public. Every client download generates a key or a single open beta key is used for everyone in the open beta phase. Open Beta testers are not "let-in" because they have any qualifications or system requirements or history of loyalty...just a pile of players poured into the machinery to see what happens.

It isn't SOE's normal operation to have an open beta in their MMORPGs. That could change, but I haven't seen anything that says they will. So until they say otherwise, I think the safe assumption will be that they won't have an open beta.
Not that I doubt what you're saying... but where are you getting this? I've seen reference to the whole friend/family thing before in these forums but nowhere else...
Are you also suggesting by this that the release date is slipping? A number of sites seem to think september or october (and I know those aren't real from the developer but somebody -- marketing -- came up with them).
And if you do have inside information, what problems are happening that are delaying things?
I am 58% addicted to Counterstrike. What about you?

Yet some of the most successful releases to date in MMORPGs have been games with no open beta. For example, CoH and DAoC had very good releases and no open beta.

Seriously, I agree with Killswitch, if they can get their server load numbers from the beta testers, there's no reason to do open beta.

Anyone know when Closed beta begins or if theyve selected people? Or has anyone recieved a confimation email saying they were accepted? Just curious as to whats happening atm. Im really looking forward to trying EQ2

Friends and Family beta started on the 19th of June. They have been doing internal beta testing forever.
Mid July is probably a better guess for closed beta to begin. In SOE fashion look for 3 or 4 phases a month or so apart. Then release.

Not it hasn't, Friends and Family begins tomorrow... I know... Trust me... Everything since then has been internal SOE employee's only.

Has blizzard ever released ANYTHING on time? As for EQ2 Beta, This week F&F begins. I don't know exactly when phase 2 (legends) will begin but it probably wont be till next month with Phase 3 (LOE and Long Term EQ Players) being middle August. I can see the game releasing mid Sept or Oct, but we will see it this year.
