leveling necessary?

do we really need levels?  do they make the game more fun? cant you have fun without them? is it just necessary to have levels because every other mmo has them?  maybe its because wow is so successful that without levels the game wont be as successful. why cant we just do away with these levels? i bet their are tons of stuff to do that doesnt have to be level based if people just think outside the box.

People want to feel like they are making progress with their characters. They don't want static log in log out no change stuff. Personally I prefer a skill based advancement system like UO because its more realistic and allows greater tailoring of a character.

Whether there is a 3rd system out there, thats not level based and not skill based, that hasn't been tried yet, I don't know. But if someone does think of it, let me know

Addendum: I wouldn't really call twitch based what the genre is looking for.. because then its really just an fps. like planetside.

Leveling isant really needed im sure its jsut the Lazy way for developers to Ballanc Toons and NPC's. And an easy way to provide a sence of acomplishment to palyers. THere are other ways advancment and leveling can be done im sure.

Sadly tho ive only had direct experience with one way of doing this and this was by EvE's skill system [no levels just sklills].

i don't really think that leveling is the problem, i just think its the way its exicuted in games these days, its basicly the same thing.

you know i dont mind leveling a charicter

but if there was a game that advertised a unique way of doing so, i might be interested in it.... games to day is whoo i lvled lets pick new skills/feats/spells and enhance my old ones... blah its the same old crap whether our goal is 14 or 99 or higher...

there are some good ideas in games out there, mmo developers need to look in to some of there non online counter parts and see what interesting things they can do for this genre.

im all for skill based games like eVE. in my single player RPGs i dont mind levels really I like that FF12 (single player RPG not that MMO). but even in FF12 I can pick any skill I want. much more freedom then MMOs

but in an MMO or cooperative RPG I dont like them. point blank they screw up teaming with my friends and screw with PVP. ive seen level based MMOs do some weird stuff to try to navigate around these issues. city of heroes has the sidekicking....

either way we will be grinding no matter what which isnt so bad if im having fun. but its much more fun if i can team with my buddy even though he might not play as often
