Guild Wars - Great game, but not beginner-friendly (PVP)

littzainlittzain Member Posts: 30

Though I haven't played Guild Wars in a few months now, I own all 3 games, and began before Factions was released.

The PvP was amazing, and I beat the PvE portion of the game once on each game.  But there was an unfortunate problem - at this point in the game, high-end PvP eas well established.  You were required to have AUX and a high rank in order to be part of any Rank >500 guild for the most part.

The only problem was that in order to achieve AUX you needed to A) grind faction or B) do the campaign, quite a few times.

Grinding faction is not bad - it's fun to PvP, but at a slow pace.  RA was unreliable, TA was not that popular or effective (especially with rank elitism) and the Tombs/Heroes' Ascent were impossible to grind faction unless you were in a high ranked pug or in with a good guild.

I loved the PvP, and the few chances I got to do mid-level PvP it was a lot more fun than the newbie games.  Unfortunately, one person will not win any PvP game in GW, and decent players seemed very reluctant to group with newbies.

Thusly, I loved the game - but the rank elitism and AUX grind made it very difficult for me to enjoy at times (Honestly, I found the PvE campaign painfully boring and repitive to do more than once).

Isn't that what PvP is about though in these games? It's about competition and elitism.

Those who get good at PvP are those who put the heavy time in. Not just time to be good. Time to be committed. Time to fill out guild applications and such. Time to grind whatever they have to grind. In the end, what is it for?

It's for the very purpose to be elitist and competitive. They like it that way, and won't change.

Casual PvP is a bit of an oxymoron... well, if you want good PvP. If you're a newbie and you want in, you have to put in the time.

Guild wars PvP was meant to be on the StarCraft level of competition and the PvE was always meant as a training tool to get people into and use to using the game mechanics before jumping into pvp...  aswell as unlocking quicker

oh and there is a quicker and easier way, BUY THE PVP UNLOCK PACKS!

Honestly, it sounds like Guild Wars is too much for you, hell, I've been in since the betas and I'm not a PvP'er, but thanks to the PvP unlock packs, i can regularly HA, TA and GvG with my guild and be competitive (and being a top 1000 and still climbing guild, I'd say we're doing something right, although WPS was top 500 at the beginning of the year)

I spent a lot of time researching that game, reading builds, frequenting forums while playing actively (20 hours at least a week) and filled many guild applications.

And I did grind quite a bit of faction and did have all the skills for some of the proffessions (maybe missing 1 or 2 elites).

The PvP packs did interest me - but I looked over the skills and found that for the money, it was not worth the few skills I'd actually get from them.

Ok, if your pvp'ing and feel lke your grindning, your not playing pvp properly...  this is a team based game, hell, i hate pvp, but I love jumping on vent with my guildies and diving into HA or helping with the odd GvG when they are one short and I regularly fill my balth faction line from both of those for doing it and it doesn't feel like grind because I'm having fun

you filled out guild applications?  are you in a guild?  if not, then jump on over to www.wolfpacksamurai.co.uk, sign up to the forum and say hi and I'll send you an ingame invite

And the pvp unlock packs not being worth it?    if your new, and you don't play all the professions in PvE, then having all three unlocks all the 1400+ skills int he game on your account, giving you:

a, access to all teh skills in the game for your heroes, both in PvE and PvP

b, access to all unlocked skills for your PvP characters

c, access to all non elite skills for the chapter you are in at the first skill trainer you come accross, just grab an Elite tome and you have a full skill bar as soon as you get to Ascalon, Shing Jea Monastery or Kamadan

Worth it?  I think so...  especially as thats more cash for ANet and NCSoft to add to the great game thats given me 5,500+ hours of fun over last 2 and a half years (nearly 3 if I include the beta's)

Grinding PvP is NOT fun, especially in RA.  Not only do you lose half of the time, the other half you have a complete idiot on your team.

PvPing in HA and GvG is out of the question, because like I said, of rank elitism and those who do not accept anyone without AUX - so you're forced to play with other people who are new.  And quite frankly, you have almost no chance winning in HA or GvG with a team full of noobs.

Not to mention the PvP packs are $39.99.  Not to mention I spent $50 on the original games themselves, I'm not exactly willing to spend $120 more just to be competitive on top of $150 I already spent.

If it's any consolation littzain, I've played the game on and off since launch and I've never really seen a time when it wasn't elitist in the top brackets. I actually got kicked from my first guild for not unlocking skills fast enough (back when the only way to get elites was to PVE grind them).

Have you tried AB  - with some decent friends and guildies I've had a lot of fun in AB and while it's not super-competitive it can be more challenging than TA.

My other suggestion is to join a guild that does GVG scrimmages  - I've just started doing this and it's a very non-pressure way to learn more about organized PVP and have fun with friends.  Otherwise, all I can recommend is do the same thing most WOW players do - join an up-and-coming guild until you outgrow them skillwise, then jump to the next level.  I've heard a lot of the top guilds are taking a break currently before GWEN comes out, so actually this may be a good time to make a push and prove yourself.

Don't be too discouraged.  There are many guilds out there that have less stringent restrictions to be able to join / stay / and participate.

I might start playing again, the more I think about it, the more I want to.

I did beat all 3 campaigns (Me/Mo, W/E, and P/W).  I have something like 200,000 faction and rank 1 or something..
