I'm not saying it's going to be a bad game but how often have we seen games that have lots of hype and turn out to be disappointing.
I mean the graphics may be good now but in a few years they will be obsolete and there will be hype about a new game boasting great graphics.

I'm with him. everquest 2 will b dead n buried by the time it has reached a decent amount of popularity.

I think that it has been a pattern for MMORPGs to get hyped beyond any reason, and then for some people to feel disappointed, angry, or betrayed when the game they were imagining in their head isn't the game that the get in the box.
Some people will probably find that EQ2 isn't what they expected. Some of those people will hate it and will vent their ire all over any available forum on the internet. Some people will play it for a while and either quit or decide that it turned out ok, even if it wasn't what they were expecting. Some people will be totally amazed and thrilled because it turned out better than they expected.
Are people's expectations reasonable? Is the hype way over the top? I think that a lot of the veteran MMORPG watchers have gotten a healthy skepticism about any game in development. I know that a lot of my friends are waiting to see if they get into EQ2's beta, and I am waiting for them to get in too, to see what they have to say about it, before I start to believe the hype.

Like all games that are being rated, none can really say weather it will be good or not. Until open beta and those in it can actually post opinions about it. Look at WOW, the hype has slowed down some as an example.
But until a game is actually released, we all can only assume by what people say. Each of us have our opinion, and each of us have our own type of games we like.
So depending on the type of game your looking for, I would wait until its closer to release and view for yourself. Only you will no if this is the type of game your looking to enjoy.

Yeah I guess thats why EQ1 is still so popular after 5+ years. How can you say that EQ2 will be dead, when EQ1 is still going strong? LOL you people are clueless, its not that tough to upgrade graphics engines. If they did it for EQ1 they can do it for EQ2.

do you think that ppl will still b playing EQ2 in 5 years time? or how about EQ1? ppl are gonna get bored of a game eventually. Look at final fantasy. can't they accept that the games they are making aren't as good as FFVII or FFVIII? wat do other ppl think?

I understand wat u r saying I personly am looking forward to EQ2 and will play it regulary. But i feel that i will be playing mid game and stop to think "oh they could of done this better", or "why isn't this included" by stopping to think though I will have proberbly been killed by a pack of crazed goblins but still i would like tosee EQ2 updateable online so it can be updated on the bugs.
Feel the power of the Dark side
Well of course ppl will eventually get tired of EQ. But helllllllooooooo!!!??? 5 years!!!?????? Most single player games last what? A month before you beat it or get tired? What other MMORPG has been around for 5 years? UO maybe but thats about it. I'd say 5 years is pretty damn good.

There's going to be absolutely nothing innovative about the game. Even the graphics are the same as SWG. If you ask me, the plasitcy perfect look isn't realistic at all, but rather makes me think my toon is a barbie doll.
Moreover, the world will probably end up being a gigantic, plain and boring atmosphere with hardly any content at all, just like SWG.
Of course the game is not out however, but given Sony's latest ventures and the path they are seeming to take, EQ2 is doomed to failure.
"Is Everquest 2 worth the hype" well until it's out and/or in public beta there's no way of knowing. I'm sure that when it is out it will be worth the hype for some players but the nature of the beast also means it won't for some others. All we can do is wait and hope, i'm sure the die-hard and seasoned mmorpg players amongs us have a pretty good idea what to expect and can look beyond the hype.
I personally can't wait for it, a sequel to one of the best mmorpg's i've played, wouldnt care if it hadn't been hyped at all i'd be playing it. BUt i'm sure an awfull lot of people will start bashing it anyway just because of it's hype and the fact it's from SOE.
I'm not expecting it to be "perfect" on day1, anyone who thinks it will is just fooling themselves, yes, I expect there to be some bugs, hopefully nothing major, but has there been an mmorpg yet that was perfect on launch?

LOL good one, the graphics arent anything like SWG. And failure? Even SWG is not failing. I dont think you know anything about either of these games. Nothing innovative? Theres tons of stuff thats never been done in any MMORPG: voice over NPC's, flying carpet for mages, skill wheel, etc. Try reading up on things before giving an uneducated opinion.

The graphics are always going to look prettier on the screenshots you see. If you look back at the pre-beta screenshots Sony released of SWG, you will see exactly the same graphics you are seeing in the pre-beta Sony released screenshots of EQ2.
As for the innovative stuff:
Voice-over NPCs have NOTHING to do with adding to my gameplay other than making talking to NPCs slightly easier.
Flying carpets for mages? I can fly on a Griffyn in World of WarCraft, and dont even need anything in City of Heroes.
As for the Skill Wheel, I'm not sure what this is, but I will research it - and it better be innovative because so far everything else isn't.
You can fly in Horizons as a dragon already, but no games have a magic carpet. Besides that was just a few innovative things. If EQ2 is just like EQ1 no ones gonna play it, Im sure SOE knows that.

Well said.
i sure hope its worth it, i quit my job and filed for divorce already
no really, with the faster paced combat i think it will be ok game, depends how much faster paced really.
The hype: I think it's about on par for what it should be, all things considered. I personally don't think it's going to be the #1 game coming out within the next year - but on the other hand everyone knows about this game that's a sequal to a big title so of course it's going to have a higher hype than anything else on the market.
Expectations: Yes, I believe it will be a pretty good game - but I also think alot of people's expectations will be too high and it will not fully live up to what people expect of it - or at least the expectations of all the 'noisy' fanbois raving over it as being the best thing ever.
Voice-overs for NPC's: Yes, it is innovative. But sorry, it's not the only one. In fact I can almost bet that MEO had voices for their NPC's far before EQ2 did, probably where they ripped the idea from since MEO showed that in their E3 2003 show. I'm also know there are other games coming out that will have voice-overs in one form or another - whether it's NPC's or voice emotes for PC's. I know the devs of DnL have mentioned this in their dev chat back in July of '03.
Flying Carpets: Well, I don't see magic carpets in themselves very innovative... Anyone remember "Magic Carpet" and "Magic Carpet 2"? Old games - but they did a great job with their carpets. Yes, they are offline games, but still - the concept wouldn't be too hard to implement into a mmorpg. Or are you talking about atmospheric flight period? DAoC had atmospheric flight with the addition of Shrouded Isles - yes it sucked since you were stuck on a predefined route from point A to B. City of Heroes has it - I haven't played it so I don't know the mechanics but it appears to be pretty much like how it is in Morrowind. WoW is supposed to have it as well, though it seems like the same exact concept as DAoC's mounts or in other words point A to B. DnL is going to have various forms of atmospheric flight - some that are on a route (A to , and some that are total freedom of control (fairies, gliders, morphing into flying creatures, and riding on flying mounts among other things).
With the hype of the EQ1 fans anticipating this game, the increbile graphics engine, multi-million dollar marketing campaign, NPC voice overs, the fact that this company is SOE..... Mathematically the game can't die. I mean, as long as it lives up to what it says, the game will be one hell of an MMO. And what happens if it makes a huge flop? It will still rake in a load of cash. Just look at SWG.
I'm predicting that this will be a truely great game though.
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot
Upcoming: EverQuest II
Incorrect. The flying mounts in WoW are NOT controllable. It is point A to point B. However, they have talked about the addition of free-flying mounts later on.
Maybe you were thinking of regular ground mounts?
EQ2 is promising one of the largest feature sets and selections of new innovative features to date. I really hope they come through with everything they are promising.
I don't really care for the art style (or lack of) that they have chosen but I believe the immersive features like the voice overs, Heroic Opportunities combat system, interactive crafting, non combat features like theatre shows by players, and home design systems will make this one of the best mmorpgs.
WoW and EQ2 aren't just big names, they both are trying to provide a lot to the market. I think we should be cheering them on and waiting with baited breath to see if they can provide us with the hours of entertainment we are all looking for.
However I am sure that neither (or any new mmorpg ever for that matter) will be perfect, so its a good idea not to build the expectation in our own minds higher then the games could ever reach though. Hope for the best but don't create a situation for yourself where there is no way you could enjoy the game no matter how good it is.
I think both games are going to do really well. Most people that want to play one, probably wants to try out the other as well.
As far as longevity goes, I think both WoW and EQ2 are going to be around for quite some time. I highly doubt either game would fall on their faces with the huge amount of rabid fans going crazy for the both of them.
Bottom line is, you don't really know what is going to happen, untill it happens. I'm betting on sucess for both of these franchises, and I don't think its a bold call.
Sadly, though it is the best looking of probably any game ever made, in my opinion i just wont be worth the money. The community will be bad as it always has been, and I dont think that any of the new material they are adding will be anything but junk to make the old EQ players happy. IE locked encounters, bad PvP and limited capabilities.
Actually, I thought that FFX was far better than FFVIII and competes with FFVII. It's story line was fantastice and it actually established characters (despite the horrible voice acting). Maybe you should play through FFX yourself to find out, and if you haven't trust me you are definately missing out on a great game.
