One of the reasons I like CoX is it's de-emphasis on PvP. Im not too high level and fairly new, but I think the main PvP area is like a BG you go to at the higher levels. You may also be able to travel to paragon/the rogue isles and wreck it up without being instanced, but I'm not sure.

Well now there are a couple pvp zones where you go can to a duke it out with the villains for control. Once you get control, there are usually advantages that are rewareded to you. There are also npc's in the zones that can give you missions, involving villains and reclaming the zone. In the higher levels, there's Recluse's Victory. It's a future Atlas park where the zone actually changes appearances based on who's in control of the city. There, the main villains/characters actually duke it out, and so can you. Usually takes quite a bit of fore to take em down tho.
Next is the PvP arena's. This is where you can challenge other players or supergroups to battle. There's also PvP in supergroup's bases. Basically, Base Raids. These aren't too common right now though.
I recommened you resubscribe or dl the trial. Issue 10 just got released (or has it?) so now's a perfect time to join because of the 2nd RIkiti invasion. The game is totally better then when it first released. They even added a "inventions" system where you can use the salvage you find... Basically, crafting. Not nearly as important in CoH/V than it is in other MMO's.
Oh yea, I forgot about the arena and base raids. The raids sound especially fun, you get to tear up the stuff other players laid out, but I've never seen them.
Recluse's was what I was talking about.

It is extremely 1-way, and whichever side has the upper hand, will have it till the end. Especially with the respawning and all. The only hope for some interesting PvP is that the winning side is getting overconfident and do reckless moves (such as splitting to go pwns you as you respawn)
This is the same problematic as with any other MMO-RPG out there. DAoC, despites all it claims, has all the same troubles and it is just as unfair as here.
So this game is the equal of MOST PvP-centric MMOs, without enforcing it. So PvPers are not abusing PvEers, it is done freely, until 1 side is bored and quit for PvE.
Usually, 1 vs 1, Villains are a LOT stronger, while group vs group, Heroes are a LOT stronger. Also, melee toons are a LOT stronger solo, while in group they are a LOT weaker.

Well back in Issue 5, they introduced Arenas. So you can go there and pvp with others of your same faction in various forms of single or team combat. They even have Gladiator Arena combat where you yourself don't fight, you have fighters such as Council mobs, Freaks, etc that fight for you. You earn Gladiators by getting certain badges.
The pvp zones are clearly marked, so you can't accidently zone into one by mistake. The pvp zones are set at a specific level, so anyone who zones in will be sidekicked up or exemplared down so everyone's combat level is equal there. Once you do there are different ways you can partake of the zone's pvp.
You can do the simple "find opposing player and kill em", earning a badge after you beat X players.
You can do repeatable instanced missions given by the zone's contact that when completed give a zone-wide buff to your faction or debuff to the other faction. You are only at pvp-risk going to/from the door as the mission is instanced once you enter. The zone's level restriction will NOT apply once you zone inside.
Finally each zone has a special repeatable mission you can do. Blood Bay has the collect meteor samples to earn you the temp power Shivan Shard (summons an Elite Boss equal to your level that fights for you for 5mins). Sirens Call has the bounty system where if you take out the enemy player that is currently listed you earn bounty points to be spent in-zone for temp powers. Warburg has the 1 charge Warburg Missle, which does extreme damage in an area effect.
Is CoX pvp well balanced? No, not really Stalker's can pretty much 1-shot anyone cept a tanker or dwarf Kheldian. Is it fun? Yes I find it be quite fun.

PvP is rarely balanced, as in any other MMO.

PvP is pointless. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...
