Recently I've stopped playing WoW, GW (I know, not really like a regular MMORPG, but the same for this discussion), EQ2, City of Heroes, and others in favor of some of the free MMO's out right now, such as 9dragons, flyff, CQ, and every other free MMO on the list of games here at mmorpg.com. It seems to me that once you get over the initial difference of graphics and class/race choice, these games are all exactly the same. You pick a skill, you go kill something 100 times, you level up. You distribute stat points, skill points, buy better armor, then go kill the next thing 100 times (or more). If you're lucky enough to get a quest, you go <there>, get <this>, take it <here>, then go back to <there>. This is all great for the purpose of the mmo, which is to be stronger than anyone else, in addition to having more skills, armor, weapons, items, and gold than everyone else.
So, I guess I'm wondering why every single mmo out there is exactly the same? Adding pvp to break the monotony of grinding an entire day for one level is a great idea. But the rest of the game is still Everquest with different skins on the environment, players, weapons, etc....underneath it all they're all the same. Well, I know why they're all the same, why fix what isn't broken. They're addictive, make money, etc. Is it too much to ask for an MMO that doesn't require grinding on the same 3 bears that just magically keep being reborn over and over? Whose questing doesn't run you in circles as an errand boy? Suppose it's just a pipe dream as long as our players continue to settle for grinding as standard because they're too addicted to demand better from their hours of gaming.

Hmm...just found the post by ICKE83. My mistake for repeating it in my own way. I guess it'll just take more and more people before it changes, if it ever does.
It just occured to me that a system of player created quests would be pretty cool. Would be somewhat complicated to restrict and control, but it could be done. Would be a step in the right direction. A world influenced by players...what an insane idea!
