personally... I have been paying similar mmorpg fees since what? 7 years ago.
So I am probably not the best person to answer you, but yes, it is worth, every penny of it. I've tried every now and then the free games and gah! the service and quality of the games are so... inferior to WoW (or any payment based MMorpg, really) that there is no comparison.
Beside, get the free trial and see for yourself
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
Of course it's worth it if you like the game (and I don't even play wow). And consider what you are calling a large amount of cash is probably less than you spend each month on your usual things you find entertaining or tasty.
It is because if you are allready addicted to video games like many of us you will end up spending a whole lot more than 15 bucks a month buying a new video game every once in a while rather than just playing one over and over. Many people in WOW like to talk about how we are addicted to WOW. What they don't consider is that like me I have been addicted to video games alltogether since the days of Galaga. WOW is simply the icing on the cake for me.
It's not worth it if your not addicted to video games. Some people out there would rather watch TV to relax or water there flowers or something. If your like me then these types of activities are fun but lack the virtual side where anything goes without worry.

I think the only way to answer that is to try it... if you are interested enough to give it a go... it is very fun when you start off... as long as
a) it doesnt take over your life
b) once the grinding takes over the fun its time to get out i.e. you're not playing to have fun, you are playing for items / money solely
just my opinion though
It is and it's not.
