I posted this thread about a month ago and got no responses.  People seem to think lowly enough of the idea to not like it, but highly enough to not berate it.  With some 500+ pokemon, 4 continents, 30+ gym leaders, etc... the only way to put them in a single game is with an MMO.  Legendary pokemon cannot be caught, but count as rare encounters for quests and such.  Team Rocket/Magma/Aqua/whatever is still running PvE quests, and tournaments on Indigo Plateau offer PvP.

Also you always here about this guy being a "fire type trainer" or that chick being a "rock type trainer" but you as a player never get the opportunity to specialize in the gameboy version.  In an MMO you could choose your pokemon trainer type and get a special bonus or abilities to raising those types.

No one is responding because Pokemon and Harry Potter MMOs are brought up around 10 times a month.  Just give it up.

sorry, something thats a proven worldwide bestseller isn't good enough for an MMO.  instead suggestions for the next fairy elf dwarf game go right to the top.

  • Would make kids beg their parents for not only money to play WoW, but now Pokemon too. We cant have that!

    Goo Goo Gah Gah?

Pffft...might as well make a Wiggles MMO.

I don't care how old any of you actually are, but it's incredibly close minded to think of Pokemon as childish.  The tv show and movies, fine, but only because they are poorly written and rely on dime store morals to make a plot.  The card game is only as childish as Magic the Gathering which of course still has a huge follow.  But the game is one of the best told RPG's in years.  I venture that Pokemon Blue/Red had the best story mechanics since FF7.  Granted the following iterations have been rehashes without any new content, but it's not like the current stock of MMOs is any better in that regard.  Everyone seems to have a hard of for FURY which is just Guild Wars with less PvE, or Age of Conan which is just WoW with better graphics and blood spatter patterns, which was just DAoC with Blizzard's name recognition and cartoony characters.

Oh noes!  My Elven Fire Mage wearing cloth and wielding an oak staff stands no chance against that Orcish Warrior in plate armor wielding a long sword because he's got enough hp's to withstand my dps for 10 seconds while he charges at me and once he gets into melee range I won't be able to cast spells without being interrupted.  Ah!

..eh.. MTG is so not Pokemon card game..and yes, Im fanboing, sue me :P

Beyond that, I like Pokemon. I'd love to really play it as an MMO, especially with the huge amount of different tactics and combat styles. Perhaps it would be the first strategic MMORPG (in a 3d world). Now that's irony.

    I agree with Rojoh.

Pokemon, although assosciated with childish attributes, has a complex story that I remember once being very involved in. I loved the gameboy versions of the games, and in fact now that I look back on it, that was me playing the closest thing I knew of to an actual MMO for my age.

Now I do suppose people would look at Pokemon as quite odd once they are past the age of 16 however If done right, I think they could pull it off. There are plenty of paths they could take with the game, and now that it's been mentioned, I don't know why they haven't made it in the past! I have never personally seen the post before.

Anyhow, It'd be cool and interesting, thats my final vote. Enough with Orcs and Evles is right, that doesn't make a good game at all..

  • I'm not sure exactly the website or anything, though I happen to know...that there IS a pokemon mmorpg. I saw a couple of them about a week ago on some website. I could try to find it again, but I'm not sure...I didn't really look into it at  the time because I wasn't really into the idea.

edit: With a quick search to google I found this   http://www.pokemonfantasy.com/index.php   right there is a pokemon mmorpg, that is in the Open Beta stages.

2nd edit: I also found this one.  I'm not quite sure what it's all about, but I do believe it's playable.  http://www.pokemononline.org/     Hope that helps

While Nintendo is very multiplayer oriented they seem to frown on the idea of online gameplay, which can explain why they don't have many online games and those they do have have shobby online features.  As of right now it it to be believed that Nintendo believes MMO's are not where the money is and that the demand for online games isn't great enough.  (??)

If a Pokemon MMO comes out it most likely wouldn't be supported by Nintendo.

  • Sorry, if it wasn't what you were hoping for..but thats all I could find. Well anyways, it's worth a shot. I do remember the Game boy versions still being pretty fun.

Well, it's not Pokemon, but they are making a Monster Rancher MMORPG, which is kind of the same thing.

Might satisfy your monster raising needs until an actual Pokemon game comes along. It's currently in closed beta over in Japan, so I'm not sure when/if it will be released here. The artwork is beautiful, though.

I think that'd be a really good idea, it would promote player skill seeing how there is tactics involved. If it could have a really well done combat system, charecter creation and maybe even have one of your pokemon walk around with you (For fun) that'd be somethin I'd buy.

It takes a certain kind of IP to make a good MMORPG.  Warhammer has it, Conan has it, Star Wars has it, Warcraft has it.

    Pokemon does not have it.

I played the Pokemon RPG on my Gameboy like 8 years ago.

So there is a way to add all this into one game.

The Sims was one of the best selling EA games... look at the MMO it made.

"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."

The Sims also had no motivations for the players other than socializing. Pokemon has a lot of motivations for players, look at the slogan itself, "Gotta Catch 'Em All!".

What's funny to me is that the Pokemon universe is probably one of the single most obvious and easiest universes to bring to life in a game. It's just that because of the childish factor that no producers want to fire it up.

Players could group to go on tough hunts to capture powerful Pokemon, they could train for Gym Badges, they could make their own shops and sell their Pokeballs, elixirs, stones, etc, they could attempt to wade into a corrupt organization's hideout and battle all of the henchmen like in the Gameboy version (or they could join the organizations themselves), they could gamble at the casinos and possibly play a form of Blackjack against other players. There could be at-stakes dueling where players bet a valuable piece of gear to whomever wins a duel.

There's so many possibilities and I'm pretty sure it would make an amazing MMO, but it's just too hard to break the mold people have of thinking of it as childish. Heck, I'd be embarrassed to play a Pokemon MMO.

I agree with your premise that it takes a certain kind of IP to make good MMORPG, (Some IP contains deep world designs that can work in MMORPG, others contains great stories).

but truth be told, Pokemon works with MMORPG (its stories might not be the greatest, but its world design works very well for MMORPG...  Heck, just by looking at the GB/GBA version of the game it gave a fairly structured world that would work with MMORPG.)

If yout hink pokemon doesnt have a strong enough IP to make an mmo you havent actually watched the show. The thing has been running for almost 12 years now, it has the classic set up for an mmo.

The show is comprised ot thousands of trainers,w hos only goal in their little world is to catch pokemon, and battle, and along the way they run into an unlimited supply of generic bad guys, along with evil pokemon and other trainers.

Too be honest, i am surrpised nintendo hasnt made an effort to create an pokemon mmo yet, based on their handheld games they obvioulsy have an idea of how to make adecent rpg, the same system would carry over online as well.
