Seems like a lot of great things are going on with EQ2, but then again LOTRO is still going strong apparently. None of my RL friends are playing either, so i ask which one is recommended by you guys that have tried them both? Looking for a good community also, since no RL will be present.

Try WoW if you haven't already.
Try EQ2 trial first, then find a Buddy key for LotRO.
EQ2 is BY far much more interesting game. It has TONS of content, several expansions and a great community. Their is tons of things to do in EQ2, 24 classes to choose from, 16 races.
In LOTR you have 7 classes and 4 races. The game has no pvp, content is really limited, especially after 30 when you are forced to team up and there is no endgame stuff.
I played EQ2 for 2 years and LOTR for 2 weeks.....
Im playing EQ2 (again) and i played LOTRO during open beta and then for a bit into the live game.
While LOTRO is indeed a fun and well put together game, while i was playing it , it just to me felt like EQ2 but with a different wrapper.
So I went back to EQ2. And im happy with that choice. There is much more content, lots more classes and races to pick from and so much more to see and do.
Im not bashing LOTRO, but the game is just lacking the content that EQ2 has to offer. Im sure that once LOTRO gets some more stuff added to it and it gets tweaked up here and there that it will be a very fun game also.
Very well spoken, I have been playing EQ2 since PVP was launched and have really enjoyed it. Best MMORPG by far.
I beta'd LOTRO. Let me put it this way... I'm still subscribed to play EQ2 since almost the day it came out years ago, but I'll never pay for the garbage they want us to eat in LOTRO because its the level of WoW terrible (its almost exactly a clone of WoW except for the graphics and story).
eq2
You know it's funny you say that because when I tried LOTRO for free I was thinking: "Hmm this kinda looks like WoW... just less neon."
To the OP: EQ2 has been around longer so it has way more content than LOTRO at this time. I never got into LOTRO, so my vote goes for EQ2
If you are looking for a game that you can play for a long time with a great community and tons to do, then EQ2 is it.
Well seeing that you placed this post in the EQII section, I believe you're going to get an overwhelmingly biased opinion here, but hey, what's done is done.
Now on to your question... Both games are very good MMO's with a lot to offer, both in content and community. I'd give the edge to EQII on content just because it's been around much longer than LoTRO. But Turbine says it will aggressively be adding more content in the future. Time will tell. I have played/play both games and enjoy/enjoyed them very much. My best suggestion to you is try them both out for yourself. Only YOU can make the decision on what you like better.
Whatever you decide...Happy Gaming my friend!
In my opinion EQ2 looks better, plays better, has much more content and really great community. LOTRO has ...., uh, don't remember what
thanks for all the input, i ended up going with EQ2, bought the EoF pack today at retail. though it was hard to pass up vanguard, being marked down to $39 now hehe

Have fun. I hope you enjoy it. Just try to give it more of a chance than one of the other posters on here who was on the isle and killed one thing but didn't like how fast it died so he quit. This is an in depth game thats alot of fun.
I'm currently playing LoTRO. Love it to death, and it is indeed doing very well. But honestly, EQ II is a better bet. It's been out for two + years, so it has a ton more content. It also has more classes, more races, deeper crafting, and housing. Maybe in a year LoTRO will have as much content, but for the time being I'd recommend EQ II.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Your asking this in an EQ2 forum. Of course the answer will be EQ2. I strongly disagree. LOTRO is much more enjoyable. Eq2 exist of large flat zones that feel empty and boring. Mind you I only purchased the single version, I do not have any expanisions so I do not know what those newer zones look like. I am lvl 18 and have been in one zone called Dark Light wood. I have been to more zone which seem as dull and empty. The quest consist of going around that one zone, killing something and turning in your missions. How boring. In LOTRO by the time i was lvl 20 i had been through so many unique looking zones that feel like one countinous massive world. In EQ2 im stuck in the one lifeless looking zone. In LOTRO you scale large mountains and all, the landscape is just simply gorgeous, dense forest with lush vegetation, tons of varations and structures through out the land, large cities with a large population. Eq2 large flat empty zones enclosed (example the commonlands). If im on the wrong island in EQ2 please someone tell me, this game is so lifeless. Please give me some direction to some decent zones i can enjoy with interesting caves or dungeons, something besides the common lands and darklightwood. The zones do not even truly connect, you run into some cave and all of a sudden your in a completely different looking zone. Im trying to like EQ2, but the world is just so uninteresting. So much more going in LOTRO, i guess thats why EQ2 is 19.99. If i get the EQ2 expansions, can i benefit from them at lvl 18? Everquest 2 does have better character models and animations, but the look of the world can not compare to the beauty of LOTRO. BTW i have a Geforce 8880 running in a core duo, on a wide screen max. LOTRO looks amazing! To me it's all about being immersed in a world, and LOTRO did it instantly. So far i do not like EQ2, but i want to like it, someone give me some guidance.
My advice to you, tempered as it is by not knowing your character's class, is to hang tight in Darklight and CL until you hit lvl 21 or 22. At that time, the dungeon Fallen Gate and the overland zone Nektulos Forest start to become survivable. I would also like to suggest that you search for and buy the Echoes of Faydwer retail box. It contains all three expansions released to date. You might also consider holding tight for three months and a week for Rise of Kunark's release in November. RoK will include the previous expansions through EoF.
EQ2 is by far a more involved game than LOTR but try them both and make your mind up that way
Having purchased Eq2, i've been pretty amazed by the new zones so far. I made a fury and am currently sitting in Kelethin. Talk about nostalgia! i love the updated soundtrack that brings back so many memories from EQ1. I also tried an evil class to check out Neriak, and WOW. it's a beautiful city, almost makes me want to continue that character, but i'm loving the areas of Faydwer too much. So the only question now is what server to continue on. Seems like Antonia Bayle is pretty popular, and I have a few old guild friends on Mistmore, but it seems pretty top-heavy.
I am so far very impressed with EQ2. I downloaded the trail after getting fed up with Wow and about a few days later I bought the all in one pack. I tried the LOTRO beta and I could not get into it. I must have done the starting zones in EQ2 about ten times now, I keep getting a character up to 8-10 and deleting them to try a new one.
Only problem with EQ2 is not enough space for new characters, if I could I'd have one of every choice they have.
