World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Announced

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

For days rumors have been flying about that the next expansion to World of Warcraft would be titled Wrath of the Lich King. Today Blizzard officially announced that this would indeed be the title of WoW's second expansion, and they've also provide some back story and listed several features including the Death Knight hero class, siege weapons and destructible buildings, an increased level cap, and more.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- August 3, 2007 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for the second expansion to World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Unveiled at the company's BlizzCon™ gaming festival before an audience of more than 8,000 gamers, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King™ will open the forbidding wasteland of Northrend to exploration by the hardiest adventurers. New levels of power, challenging new dungeons and encounters, an exciting new character profession, and the game's first hero class are just some of the new features awaiting players in Wrath of the Lich King.

"This expansion will add some of the most infamous characters and settings from the Warcraft® universe to World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. "In addition to new story content, Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a number of features specifically requested by players over the past couple of years. We're looking forward to sharing further details with everyone as development progresses."

Players last visited Northrend in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne™, when Arthas Menethil fused with the spirit of Ner'zhul to become the Lich King, one of the most powerful beings in the Warcraft universe. He now broods atop the Frozen Throne deep in Icecrown Citadel, clutching the rune blade Frostmourne and marshaling the undead armies of the Scourge. In Wrath of the Lich King, the forces of the Alliance and the Horde will venture into battle against the Scourge amid Northrend's howling winds and fields of jagged ice.

I know this will not be out for a little while yet and there is still lots of time for new info to stream out but does anyone else feel that blizz is running with half an ass, come on one hero class, really, this was something they talked about from the get go and they come up with One after 3 years. Aswell is this how it's going to be 10 new lvs every year, with Three tier sets in between, I had held hope for something great from blizzcon, IMO 10 lvs new raids and one hero class isnt enough, WAR is coming but it seems blizz doesnt fear it.

  • This expansion looks more like a patch.  :)  A stale wanna-be MMO gets more stale raid content.  I was fooled by the Burning Crusade, but Blizzard will have to pry my cash from my cold dead hands for this one.

Its sad now that Blizzard is drifting more and more away from vanilla WoW. The original didn't even have a design for Raids, and now look where it is and where its going.

When Roper and company left Blizzard snatched up the flunky SOE EQ devs and it shows.

Did you guys read about how to access the Death Knight Hero class? lol, they'll be like 1 Death Knight to every 100,000 players. Why? Its all high-end raid only access.

They should of added in some other activities that a player can do that doesn't involve dungeons or killing. (Housing is a good timesink Blizzard... and collecting items for said House is good fun for non-raiders... you know the other 8.5 million players).

will be curious what they do to not kill new players/alts with a 1-80 initial grind

CANT WAIT!!!!!! when i found out i was BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS. Death Knight, new proff, another place to discover, not to mention lvl 80 AND new monsters/dungeons!!

Anyone know about any other heroe classes though???

hm... cooly another expansion  can't wait, Definitly hope they fix the PvP, sounds like their adding a whole new concept to the game itself, should at least be interesting. Also, can't wait to see more hero classes (i think the death knight their showing is just to show that there is going to be even more new things to see, but instead of savioring on all classes their going to show em off 1 by 1) i just hope the release date isn't going to be butchered like all of blizzard's games

    ........

Wrong, I'm an ex-WoW player and agree with the rest of what you said, but this little snip-it is dead wrong as they specifically said that you would NOT have to raid to gain access to the Death Knight class. Seriously, go read the Gamespot article that gives blow by blow coverage of the announcement. Look specifically at "1:29" through "1:39", it details how you'll go about gaining access to the Hero class.

They said that the Death Knight was the first and only at the moment, but they would be adding in more as time goes by and that Hero classes are going to be the represent the Heroes from Warcraft III. So besides Death Knights there are Paladins (ROFL, wonder how they'll handle that ;) ), Far Seers (think: Thrall), Lich's, Protector of the Grove, Priestess of the Moon, Demon Hunters, Tauren Chieftans, Witch Doctors (can't remember what the Troll hero was called), Beast Masters, Wizards, Blood Mages,  Wardens, Dwarf Kings and a few others I can't thin of at the moment. Well, that's the pool they have to draw from anyway, I highly doubt they'll be able to get all of those in the game. But I have to say alot of those would be REALLY interesting classes to play and they might even be enough to get me back into WoW.

    the xpak looks nice actually

I would assume more would go into it though as far as classes are concerned. but i think another level raise is getting out of hand...i sure hope the new xpak that follows this one,  doesnt add AA's.

sounds too Norrath to me atm but still, looks interesting.

    /sigh...

Does anyone else feel like this is Burning Crusade Two.

    1) Ten more levels and item inflation...again.

    2) A brand new money sink profession.

    3) New raid content at the cap.  Now with fatter loots.  Kill of more lore.

    4) A new BG to grind, a new outdoor PvP "innovation" that I'm sure will be as well used as Halaa, EPL, etc.

    5) Same old broken arena system.

The only new part is thier hero classes, which I have no doubt will be insanely overpowered.

Sounds exactely like the last expo in every way.  You can't fool me twice.

Yes, this does sound like Blizzard has a somewhat set model for what they'll be releasing as an expansion based on current information.  Even the Death Knight class will likely only be playable in the new continent ala flying mounts in Outlands.  So not only is the new content build twice in a row for level capped players almost exclusively, but the first new playable class since release just reinforces that fact.

Well this seems to be a good way to kinda prepare WoW for the upcoming competition agaisnt AoC and WAR, now noone can say they dont have sieges and siege weapons.  The whole thing does seem half assed however.  The Death Knight thing is something I actually think is a good idea, kinda like the jedi were in SWG in the beginning.  However this does seem kinda slim but oh well.

Just as another poster said, I bought Burning Crusade, but I'm not paying for this. ANOTHER 10 levels? 1 single profession, and a raid access only Hero class? There's nothing in this x-pac I'm even remotely interested in. Hopefully Warhammer comes out before it's released.

Edit: I forgot about siege weapons. Those actually sound pretty cool, but it's not enough. I'm ready for a whole new game.

Well , what can i say , they said there will be much more heroe classes in the future and some of theese will be only accsessable side by side ( i mean horde exclusive and alli exclusive) , blizz tells us u'll be able t ointeract with the lich king himself aswell so the lore is not just a grind you throw the game thingy like in bc  , i hope ... :P  and finally blizzcon is still not ended , so if the gods want it aswell there will be a new , exciting and awesome new project announcement today and more info about the warcraft movie aswell .. i hope blizz won't mutate like EA or jowood or any others who started in little studios with nice games but after so they are jus t live for money , menagement in' games  and hypno ppl to play with their trash ...  the burning crusade is not a good expension maybe the lich king story will be.. well  ,  time wil resolve the problem , and will deicide what is the future of blizzard.. i cross my fingers for em ! :)

Ummm not to point out the obvious but wasn't it always obvious that Blizzard would add levels 10 at a time over a period of years until they hit level 100?  It's a level based game after all: more content inherently means more levels.  In a skill-based game you can just add new skills and let people move into them by decaying old skills (e.g. UO) for an expansion, but with a WoW style level system you need new levels to give new areas a reason to exist.  It's not like they need more land for housing, well not yet anyway.  I expect that at year 5...

It looks interesting anyway.  I'm sure it will be very polished and a lot of fun if you enjoy WoW, because Blizzard knows what is on the horizon and they have the money to have a very good tilt at keeping their dominant place in the market.

Someone correct me if I am out of line here.  This siege stuff .....wasn't this supposed to be in the release according to Blizzard promises way back when ? I'm not 100% sure but I could swear they said it would be .

I would be tempted to go back to wow (canceled few months ago) but I dont think I will.

The only reason for me to go back would be to try the new class.

The reason NOT to go back, is that the game is still full of things I don't like (like too much grind for items, too long wasted time to just move from one place to another, and I got a job so little free time, the graphics are too cartoonish, not on par with other new games coming out this/next year, the company sucks at listening to the players about improvements they want in the game, takes them too long to respond and the response is not even always good, and finally the in-game community is one of the most immature I have found, just to list a few of the reasons). The siege stuff will be a joke. Probably you go and blow some building for no apparent reason.

All this, at the same time that at least 5 interesting new games are hitting the market soon, and most likely before this expansion is out. I will try those and play the one I like. Only if they all suck I might buy the expansion, but this is highly unlikely.

if you don't like WoW now then I expect the addition of a new class won't change anything.  But if you do like WoW, or if WoW is "ok" but you want something a little different from that game, then this expansion will probably be great.

That said, typically no expansion can compete with the "newness" of a completely new game, so Blizzard better be on the ball with this one or WAR is going to hurt them (assuming it lives up to its press, which is a pretty standard and huge "if").

Desperate attempt at keeping current WoW players from jumping to the new games coming out shortly. Between Age of Conan and Warhammer they have no choice but to bring some new content to people.Sounds like TBC all over again which many people bought but yet so many complained. Will people dig deep into their pockets once again ? I guess only time will tell.

Yet more content is going to be wasted after WOTLK. How many people actually went into Naxx? I thought I read somewhere around 5%.

How many people will have been into Mount Hyal or the Black Temple? How many new players have even done MC or BWL?

I don't mind a new expansion, because after hitting 70, I've sat this expansion out. I'll just level all of my 60s to 70 and wait.

TBC introduced  plenty of great things, but in the end it just fell flat for me.

A deathknight that gnomes can become? Give me a break. I'm hope that you just unlock the call option and roll a new character at a high level and the gnome doesn't become a deathknight.

"How many people will have been into Mount Hyjal or the Black Temple?" Just when do you think this expansion will be out? It probably won't be out for a year or two, in that time most raiders will have done BT and Hyjal, and then gone on to do Kil'Jaeden. I really don't get your attitude though, but If people want to sit around in greens and blues at 70 for a year or two, fine, that's their choice I guess, to miss out on some great content and be a joke in PvP. But if that's your way of thinking, why play at all? Something will always come along to make your gear obsolete, that's the whole point, to give you an incentive to complete the new content.
