It's hard reading up on this particualr game becuase there are so many chapters/expansions (whatever) it's hard to choose the correct ones. Money isn't a factor and I want to enhjoy all the PvE and PvP elements of the game. But I'm a huge PvP'er and am looking for a game that I can PVP at the end.
What I'm trying to say is, should I buy the whole shamboozle of games? I hear it's pretty short (compared to most mmo's) but what I really want to do is shine in PvP combat.
I'm just looking for a new game, WoW, and L2 are dead to me... same with EvE and CoH/CoV.

Well, Guild Wars uses instanced PvP. The instances are not connected to the game world. So if you are looking for real pvp with an impact on the world, like L2 for example, this is not it.
As for PvE game play, it is also instanced (-> zoning everywhere , no seamless world). Once you go out of the cities to play you are alone with your group and will never see another player.
My recommendation would be to wait for games with open worlds like AoC, Aion, etc... to come out. And while waiting to play some free to play games like Silkroad or Perfect world (has territorial ownerships and battles, more than 5000 quests, etc... features + shots & videos and more on the wiki here : http://www.perfectworld.cc/).
ok i just copied this from a post ive made, im really tired and this probably wont make much sense lol
Well Guildwars is different from most MMO concerning expansions, there not expansions but individual games kinda..
Prophecies was the "Orginal", the first, of the GW to be created.
Then NCsoft created GW: factions, which is a game that does not require prophecies to play.
Then came GW: Nightfall, which also does not require prophecies or factions to run.
Each has a storyline PVE based, which helps you level up if you like that style, or you can make a lvl 20 (max) player just for pvp.
However, prophecies has the orginal proffesions, but because factions and nightfall are individual games, not only do they have the orginal proffesions the two games also have there own 2 proffesions.
FACTIONS is the game which has assassin and ritualist proffesions, Nightfall is the game that has paragon and deverish proffesions.
Although PROPHECIES is the orginal game, the player base is mainly playing NIGHTFALL then FACTIONS, this is because people get bored of the old and play on the new, pretty simple but true.
NIGHTFALL might be the best one to get first, mainly because you will get heros (AI chars you control) which will basically help you to grind when no other people will help you. Infact the game has kinda become very anti-social as a npc healer is much faster than a real one if you catch my drift
FACTIONS has a much smaller PVE storyline compared to NIGHTFALL and PROPHECIES, but it has two proffesions the other two games do not have.
So a mix between NIGHTFALL and FACTIONS will currently give you all the available proffesions, but not all the character slots
The latest installment of guildwars EYE OF THE NORTH will require you to have at least 1 guildwars game, either prophecies, factions or nightfall as it is not a game, its a expansion ONLY.
I forgot to add that you can play your character (EXAMPLE) from FACTIONs on either nighfall or prophecies, but you will have to perform a quest to get to the other game. and you can move between the different worlds by boat, which is instantanious.
BUT
To do the missions to go between the different games, they are placed half way through the campaigns (PVE STORYLINE = CAMPAIGN).
So you cannot make a new player on FActions then teleport it two the beginning of nightfall say for example.
You will have to grind your player up, level a bit and get to the town with the quest, complete the quest with henchies or other people or hero's (hero's can be obtained from nightfall only atm). then you will begin the campaign half way through.
Only plus side about making chars on the different campaigns is that you can play the storyline from start to finish and
When you reach level 20 the things people do mostly are the following:
- PVP, for faction to unlock items, weps, elite skills (skills unlocked can be used by only PVP chars and hero npcs you control).
- High end looted dungeons
- Titles - Basically you complete the objectives to gain a title under your name, like complete all the missions and bonuses to get defender of tyria for example.
- Elite skills, Unlocking Elite skills from bosses found on the game worlds either in the missions or on the actual worlds.
You can only have 1 elite skill on your control panel at 1 time, but you can collect them and use them on PVP only chars and heros once there unlocked.
- There are many types of pvp gameplay so you wont get tired of it fast, probably more types than WOW but then i didnt pvp much on WoW.
Hahah soo.. I basically dont even have to buy prophecies
Just get Nightfall and Factions?
I really want to play the assassin.
Yep you can get any of the boxes.
I've played BoringWorld and SilkGrindFest when they both first came out.
I need something to hold me over untill AoC comes out. The EvE trial is boring as balls and WoW and L2 are both finished. Vanguard/CoV/EQ havent cut it for me.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
The MMORPG world is at a standstill.
Buy Factions for Assassin proffesion although to be honest you may have trouble getting groups because its very weak in PVE but good in PVP. And people are picky about who they take into tougher missions near the end of the 3 storylines, as myself have an assassin

Assasin is only weak in pve because people don't know how to use them... hell, my hero assasin is better than most pve assasins out there... oh yeah, thats cos i know how to set them up and even the AI can't screw it up
If I don't buy profecies/nightfall, will I be missing out other things like skills points? or anything that will affect my skill advancement. Or just the PvE side of things?
you will miss out having paragon and deverish proffesions from NIGHFALL. you will have ranger, necro, monk, elementalist, ritualist, assasin, warrior with FACTIONS (prophcies = no deverish, paragon, ritualist or assassin).
Also miss out on the two different storylines, and will not be able to go to the other two worlds.
Im not sure how many player slots you will be able to have, but every game you get i think will give you two more slots ontop of the original 4 open slots.
skill-wise, there are certain skills (normal or elite) that can be found in prophecies, nightfall and factions.
Although factions and nightfall have some of the orignal skills from prophecies, but also the newer skills, which some are better and worse than the orginal, some are actually the same as prophecies orginal skills but different names and pictures on the front,
Best mix of games is factions and nightfall.
As nightfall has access to hero's that can be used in all 3 games, but only GIVEN in Nightfall.
You get all the proffesions from factions and nightfall.
And the majority of the skills elite and normal.
Because prophecies is the oldest, most people tend to play the newer ones, obviously nightfall is the newest, so everyone goes to new content, though factions has people, i found prophecies rather quieter than factions and nightfall.
Nightfall has the longest storyline, then prophecies, factions storyline is the smallest, but you reach level 20 before you finish one storyline anyhow.
hope that helps a bit
you'll enjoy the game....its fun

Add I don't know if you have been in Prophecies lately, there are just as many players there as there are in factions. Plus Prophecies will always be a good choice for people because of the free skills quests. Prophecies will never be a barren waste land (so to speak) with no players. There are too many things to do and regions to explore. By the way Prophecies storyline is longer than Nightfall both in content and in missions 20 for NF and 25 for Proph.
If money is no concern though, definately pick up all three games for the skill selection and characters.

PvP in gw is more like Counter Strike, than, another mmorpg, you use/created your chars with all skills you have available and is a game oriented to team, where, everyone have to do its part perfect or... nothing, perhaps its a too serious pvp, of course, voice is needed to do "something".
I played it since it comes out, my guild was almost ever in the top 100, but finally I quit cause its too estresing, too must competetitive, its like an e-sport. Just take it in account. And if you are ok with this, just, buy ALL! you will need ALL skills from ALL the guildwars expansion.
Well you might compare it to other mmorpgs but don't forget NO MONTHLY FEAS!
Prophecies is pretty cheap anyhow, factions also, ive seen a collectors edition go for £17 ($35) for factions £10 (20)for the normal edition. Although those we're europe based prices, im sure if you look hard enough you'll find them cheaper from a store rather than the digital download.
So bite the bullet, get one, if you like it get the other two, having all 3 is definately the best experience.
But heres my honest advice - DO NOT.
And now its your choice to decide
Played almost everything...
Currently playing nothing...
Waiting for: Darkfall, WAR, Guild Wars 2.
Oh shut up, you can get all three chapters for $60 from Fry's now... and considering the 5000 hours I've gotten out of the game so far, and i bought them all brand new at £35 each, I think they're a damn good bargain now
Thats most probably because you CANT or dont WANT to pay the monthly subscription, Yes GuildWars is NOT BAD but its not good either.
GuildWars has ALOT of tiny things that make the game unplayable for me - one MAJOR problem I find is not being able to jump OR fall etc, like if I have to goto this one crater I have to walk ALL around it to find myself an entry location, gets frustrating

One thing that has always confused me. Why do people go to forums of games they don't like? Why are you here...is it because you have become a gaming nomad? You little kids arguement from two years ago "Oh people only like and play GW because they can't afford a monthly fee." Are you freaking kidding me with that? You can't jump or fall who cares? Instead of being a bunny rabbit you have to walk oh well...
You knew it going into the game why are you complaining about it, if you didn't know it and it is obviously something very important to you, it is YOUR BAD for buying it. Unless mommy bought it for you on the credit card she used to pay your monthly fee with.....you see...oh wait, I am sorry I was using your childish logic. I apologize. I should know better than that as a veteran of the WoW vs GW "Flame Wars of '05"
A movie with 1 person - approx $30 (2 tickets 9.50 + 2 soda & popcorn) for 2hrs.
GW Prophecies - approx $30 (on sale everywhere)...if you enjoyed it for even 3hrs in the 2 days you though it fun by your own words, you got more value for your entertainment than going to see a movie.

If you just want to PVP, then you should purchase GW the PVP edition. It unlocks all the PVP content that you'd normally have to spend upwards of a year or so to unlock in PVE.
A real pvP'er will unlock most of it in a month, 2 at the top
If you want to seriously pvp you need all 3 campaigns... You can only get 8 skills with you but whet really matters in pvp is flexibility and ability to change your builds and for that you need every skill in game. You can buy all 3 campaigns pretty cheap anyway.
Don't listen to ppl who say asasins are weak in pve.. it's complex class and hard to master but when you know how to play it it can be really deadly =]
There is so much cool stuff about Guild Wars, like quest, P2P, so much stuff, it is just like World Of Warcraft, except better, and its cheaper! Just a one time payment.
Yep, there are less WoW Kiddies than you might expect: http://babyorc.ytmnd.com/
Buy GW you will have fun forsure! Factions gives you Allliance Battles which are quite fun!
people have said that pvp in guildwars is way better than pvp in anyother game, and after i tried pvp on gw at my friends house man....
i tried Wow pvp, it was awesome, but guild wars?
it is the definition of pvp, simply amazing...buy the (i quote from u) whole shamboozle, don't forget eye of the north when it comes out, and guild wars 2 is coming out as well, well either late 2008 or early 2009
don't every say pvp is good in gw, say its amazing....
