I've been checking out like every new MMO coming out recently, hoping to find something similar to Anarchy Online. I liked the way you could build your character in that game and weren't forced to rely on 5 basic attributes to get somewhere. Are there any games coming out that look like they will offer a lot of customization or at least take some thinking rather than straight grinding to be good? Thanks
Edit:
The aspect that I really liked was how they set up your level progression. Instead of getting 2 attribute points per level you were given "IP" You could use that on any number of skills from crafting to run speed to your attributes. There was a lot more than just your basic strength, stam, con, vit etc. when it came to attributes as well.
The main reason I quit WoW after 60 is because it so so "Basic" By that I mean it seemed like everything was very straight forward and it didn't take a brain surgeon to figure out how to do well in the game. I'd rather like to see something that took a lot of research etc. to do well.

Well i wish you put more info here on what you want but EvE has what you have said. Complete charecter cstomisation from over 600 skills with 5 levels each all of which you can have if you wanted. There are also a lot of Modules ingame [another 500] all of which you can use if you can get them. And the Avitar itself is very customisable.

I agree with what you said about eve. I tried it out and just couldn't cope with the gameplay. I still would like to stick with a physical character instead of a ship. I like the post apocalyptic, sci fi, stuff but more than that I just want a solid game with good customization, Customization across the board being the key ingredient.
Well EvE is getting proper [out of ship] Avatars within 5 omonths now ill just find the link for you now.
Look at post number 25

Perhaps have a look at Ryzom and it's modular stanza or skill system? All your actual character's skills can be build up and torn down due to the customization of the bricks your skills consist off. When you progress through skill levels you get points added to a skill pool you can then invest in even more diverse bricks and build more powerfull actions. You're fully capable of playing without tinkering to much with the stanza system, but those who understand the power of it have it way easier and can accomplish more than the average player.
I'm pretty sure he meant physical avatars that could do more than hang out in spacestation lobbies.
Back in the Pre-NGE days of SWG, they had image designers, which made avatar customization all very fun, especially if you were in a guild. I haven't heard if they even allow that anymore, meh.
But if you meant skill customization. DDO oddly does a fairly okay job with that, but don't expect players to like you for it. For example, if you specialize in harm spells as a cleric, or undead spells as a wizard/sorcerer, expect to be turned down for groups. In DDO, it's all about the min/max of your class. No one wants a cleric that can do direct damage, they want a cleric that can res/heal/buff, nothing more despite all the customization the skill sheet and feats selection provides.
Another game that comes to mind in regards to character skill customization is Ryzom, you can make your own attacks, but you have to balance their benefit with a cost, either in HP, MP(they call it sap), or SP (stamina), and possibly time to cast, time to re-use, range, and damage (type and amount). This is a bit of a confusing process in Ryzom, even with the fact that it's all very visual (you get a 'balance' scale that tips one way or the other). Ryzom, atleast, is the more forgiving in skill customization. If you think the skill you made stinks, you just delete it and start all over again, any base skills, damage types, HP/MP/SP costs, and other types of costs are all still saved that you earned with your skill point purchases, so you can build new skills at any time from them.
Asheron's Call 1 is another game that allows customization as well. You can pick the skills you want, for what skill level, and your stats. There are no classes per se, although some skills work well with others (melee/combat skills will progress equally with your weapon skills and etc), but no particular skill conflicts or hinders any other skill you have selected as part of your choices. Also, there are tiers to their skills. Primary skills are the skills you chosen to focus on, these are the easiest to advance either by using them or by spending your experience points on them (it's advised not to waste too much experience, saving them for when you reach around post 150 points in some skills like war magic). Then you have secondary skills, which you may have chosen, but not to the point of being what you will use primarily all the time (like cooking, or fletching, or other tradeskills you want to explore or use if your primary skills benefit from them, like being a fletcher and an archer are pretty nice to have together since you'll only need to buy elemental type arrows from other fletchers as you start out...). And finally, there are two other tiers of skills, one which advances from use, but are very low in their skill levels (because they solely depend on your player attribute/stats to give them bonuses), and then there are totally untrained skills, which cannot advance from use and must be trained from the training points you gain reach level you advance (this is very useful as you won't be able to pick all your favored skills like being a warrior that can pick up life magic or other any buffing magic skill set).
Ultimately, AC1 has probably the most skill choice next to Ryzom, from my experience, but I am playing with Ultima Online for curiousity(sp?) sake and I found it's probably can equal AC1 and Ryzom very easily in skill customization since you're not locked in by levels in what skills you can use or can't use as they all advance by use and there is no 'xp' to gain. From these, I hope you find the MMO you want to play with until either you get bored or choose another one to play.
