I'm guessing that last video wasn't an official Funcom video. It was way too informative and showed too much variety of combat.
Coolest thing I've seen in an MMO so I had to comment about it. The guy that gets rooted near the end of the video actually reaches down and pulls at his legs, seemingly wondering why he can't move.
That was an awesome touch, and looked really cool.
See why can't Funcom show things like that? That would have impressed me immensely a long time ago.
Getting ready to watch the "Beta Onslaught" vid.
One opinion though. Too much blood throughout combat. I know it's M rated and that means blood and gore, but it looks like these people aren't even wearing armor, or that their armor is made of blood. I mean it's just buckets of blood flying everywhere for what look like weak hits or hits on armor.
They should have the buckets of blood effect for special combos or finishing moves, not for just regular swings. Especially when the characters are wearing plate mail.

That's actually a fairly common theme on the O-Boards right now. Apparently a bunch of the dev's went and saw 300, and Gaute decided right then that they had to have "300 style" blood. It's met with very mixed reviews though, and with as much disgruntlement as I've seen, I'd be very surprised if they did not tweak that back down again.
I'm going to give it a try, but from what I have seen it the videos, I'm not too sure the combat will be all that great. Apparently, the game has an automatic block system (like Morrowind); If thats true, it will suck probably. Also, in the video when he was fighting numerous bandits, he just ran in there and started swinging---That seemed to be lame, and it implies a click-fest/button-mashing sort of game. Thats just my initial opinion. When I play it, it could change. Its just that the videos of combat didn't seem so unique.
The only thing that hurts me to watch is the foot slide. As a physicist (maybe it's just us?) seeing someone sliding around in place reeeeeally just causes me physical pain.
I don't mind someone sliding around when you turn your character around. That's easily prevented, but it's understandable.
But all the leg motion involved in swinging in this game, if they just got rid of the foot slide, the combat and animations would look 200% better. At the moment whenever someone is up against another person it looks like they're fighting on ice, or a lot of banana peels.
Disclaimer: I'm not bashing, just trying to point out what still needs touching up, why it needs touching up, and the outcome of touching this thing up.

That was a demo dev character with 99999999 hitpoints, your character wont be able to pull that off
If they fixed it some time ago, then these "latest" videos must be older ones just now shown. I was referring to the very last video on that list. The one that is by far the best. It still has tremendous amounts of foot slide. Namely about time marker 1:41 where he's fighting several mobs at once.
There's no foot slide when he's attacking and there's still room between him and the mob, but as soon as they're against each other (CD is in effect) they start iceskating.
I only bring it up because I remember it being common in AO, and I'm really hoping they fix it this time around.
EDIT: You just reminded me. I need to change my BIO. Not currently playing EVE. ha

They used Motion Capture for the animations. This means that the Foot movements are tied to the swing being done. They would have to completely reanimated the lower portion of the body to not move during combat at all, which would look even worse. The animation is actually very nice, especially if you watch the hips and feet rotate through the swings. The down side is, the legs have to move and you get your "Ice Skating" look. I can think of no Positive way to fix this and still maintain the combat animations looking like combat animations rather then parapalegics trying to whack away at each other.

That one is one that Erling did on Fraps for gamersinfo, or rather that he had done, and gave to gamersinfo. Like you, I'd agree it's probably the best recent video because it shows so much more than we were used to seeing. Now, and dont quote me on this, but I BELIEVE, that what the press saw at the press event, and what was demonstrated via this video, is one version of the game prior to the "current" version. Now why the PR team would decide to show that instead of the current version, I dont know, and I would not want to speculate.
From what I've seen and read, is that SOME, SOME of that sliding can be corrected, and perhaps has been, although the impression I got from reading dev posts, is that it probably wont be 100% eliminated. I think that's a bummer, but I am curious to see how much, if any can be eliminated in the builds before release. (see, I'm not bent on being unreasonable, things I dont like, I dont like, and I admit it...)
I'm EXTREMELY interested in seeing the video from the LGC. WIth their demonstration there of seige combat, I think we'll pick up plenty of good info. We'll see some of the mechanics, we'll see the animations, see if/how sliding has been reduced, see how spell effects, and having multiple players fighting on the same screen will effect performance. (no, it wont be perfect, but seeing 20-30 people playing is a step in the right direction to concerns that this game needs a solid system. After all....and it's a bad example, but could you imagine playing Vanguard with 15-20 people and their spell effects all going? )
