I'm going to be a senior in High School this year, and as such I'm looking at possible colleges. Considering that I plan on going to school for Computer Science and Aerospace Engineering, I'm looking at mostly engineering schools. For a long time, the one that I was pretty much set on was Georgia Tech. This was mostly because, after going to a lot of different colleges for visits, it was the one I was most impressed with. However, I'm writing this post after having a college visit at Virginia Tech, and I have to say I think Georgia may have met its match. The Virginia Tech campus is just as nice as Georgia Tech's, and academically they are pretty much on par with each other. Probably one of the main differences is the location. Georgia Tech is located in the heart of Atlanta, and as such is subject to all the rewards and problems of living in a big city. In stark contrast, Virginia Tech is practically located in the middle of nowhere Virginia, the nearest town having a population just over 40,000 people (and that includes the 28,000 college students). However, the benefit is that the area happens to be one of the most spectacular areas in terms of natural beauty in the eastern half of America. I'm really torn between the two, and I'm looking at a lot of comparisons to get down all the minor details that could help me distinguish between the two and maybe make my choice easier.
I guess my main question here is, if any of you guys on the boards have either gone to yourselves or know someone who has gone to either of these colleges, what was your opinion of them while you were there? I'd love to hear from some more current students or alumni at both of these schools to hear what they have to say. But any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Lol, I haven't seen my cousin in a couple years (wasn't able to go to her graduation), but she definitely was not as nerdy as my side of the family. I'll put it that way.
This post is getting a bit off topic

Wow im also going to be a senior and planning on going to college for the same majors
but im a northeast kind of person, my favorite of where i have visited have been dartmouth, Rensselaer polytechnic, cornell, and university of Vermont
but i cant really help you with any southern schools
I actually grew up mostly in Pennsylvania before I moved to Tennessee, and I was honestly dead-set against going to school in the south for a long time. But a lot of the good engineering schools are down here, so I couldn't really be picky. Also, while Georgia is DEFINITELY the south, Virginia is kinda close enough to be pulled either way. It's kindof a mixing area of both northerners and southerners, since it's smack in the middle.

ya ive heard good things about both schools, but there just kinda far for me to visit, and im not going anywhere unless i visit there first
M.I.T. How can you not include this if your pursuing a career in technology? However, its going to be very difficult to get in.
Because I did good in school, but not THAT good. Oh, and the fact that is ridiculously fucking expensive.

What state do you live in? Virginia or Georgia? You realize the price doubles if you are from out of state. I don't think you or anyone is going to care too much if you went to VT or GT. You will be happy no matter where you go because college is fun.
Here's how I chose. I live in Florida. I wanted a fairly well known school. That leaves Miami, FSU, or UF. Miami is out of the question because it is private. My Dad convinced me not to goto UF because he hates it. So, I goto FSU and I like it. I'm sure I would have liked any of the others though.
Neither. I live in TN, but I'm not going anywhere in that state, because almost all of the schools suck lol. And I was just wondering if anyone went there/knew someone who has so I could get their comments. It's a many thousand dollar decision, so I'm not really taking it lightly.

If you insist on going out of state, I'd go with whatever is clsoer. You will get sick of driving.

"Suck"s as in the only school comparable to GT or VT in terms of academics is Vanderbilt, and that's not a good engineering school. And as far as distance from my hometown goes, GT is 8 hours and VT is 9. I don't think one hour is going to make that huge of a difference.Like I said, it's a really expensive decision, so I don't want to make it based on which one's closer. It's not something I plan on taking lightly by any means, and every bit of info I can get from absolutely all sources is important. They're different enough that I can split them up, but I can't necessarily decide on either right now. If after I find out everything and if I get accepted to both, and I still can't decide, then I guess I'll have to just pick one, but I'd like to find out as much as possible from as many people as possible before I do that.

for my school.. i ended up choosing between georgia tech and umiami on architecture.
of course i chose the u based on the location and the fact that Gtech doesnt seem to appreciate their out of state students as much.
its actually more than double the price for an out of state student.. they dont give scholarships to incoming freshman.. and grant money is ok.
basically georgia tech didnt recognize any merit based reward vs miami who offered a 24,000 annual scholarship + additional grants for 5 years of schooling.. versus georgias couple thousand bucks in grants + loans for only 4 years of schooling..
do your research on how much schooling your major entails.. including grad work. because in the end for me i found it was cheaper to actually attend a private institution rather than a tech school to get a degree in architecture.
gtech was a very nice campus and the people there were definitely kind and easygoing. now.. its really your preference whether or not you want an urban setting or a rural one.. either way the campus still feels like a campus. its nothing like NYU wehre their campus is buildings scattered throughout new york city. i myself prefer an urban->suburban setting.. just cuz theres more stuff to do.
since im going to school from new jersey.. its a plane ride away theres no way im gonna drive down to either georgia or atlanta haha
but even the plane ride to miami ended up being cheaper than to atlanta
you might wanna consider plane tickets if youre not up for the drive
also. look into how much funding each school gets for research and stuff.. thats pretty important for a tech school.
my dad's cousin was a professor at cornell gtech and other places.. and i remember him telling me when i was looking into schools that georgia tech was the most funded public research institution.
This should be more of a matter of how much do you like snow? Yes go to Virginia Tech no go to Georgia Tech.

there are some really good schools in PA, head on back.
if your a super genius go to carnegie mellon, its top 3 computer engineering school. if not, pitt is ranked in a tie as top overall public school in the nation, and along with penn state both have great engineering schools. though penn state has a 92 year old football coach who shat himself on the sidelines last year and all there is to do there is tip cows, id pick pitt.
pittsburgh is always an option if you dont mind a shitty place to live in
great schools there.. but horrible community
turned me off hehe dunno about you
and no you dont have to be a super genius to go to carnegie mellon.
i know some kids who were honestly stupid and they got accepted there
college admissions is just weird nowadays
standards are going up in every school. ivy leagues are almost a crapshoot unless youre a top 10 does everything student,
places like BC and shit are rejecting perfectly qualified students,
and lower end schools are upping their standards.
which is no doubt a good thing because now you dont have to go to a predetermined institution to get the same quality of education
This is some advice from somebody that changed majors a few times (three, or so) before he got his undergraduate degree and has seen quite a few universities: Weigh the curriculum more highly than the campus.
If I could do it again, then I'd put my utmost effort into researching and comparing the curricula of each school.
Why is it important? If you don't plan on going to grad school (which will put you at a huge disadvantage nowadays), then your entire expertise in your field will be based on your curriculum; the more rigorous the curriculum, the more preparation you'll have for when you enter the real world.
If you do plan on going to grad school, then you will be at a considerable advantage if you have already been exposed to material at a graduate level; an advanced curriculum might even save you the 2+ years that it usually takes to get a masters degree on top of it.
There are even certain programs that will you get you an MS degree over the duration of a BS degree, although it will require much more effort.
In any case, congratulations on getting into the schools, since they are both great schools.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I go to UGA. It's way better than GA Tech. Tech is boring.
carnegie mellon isn't an ivy leage school, but its very close and in a tier with johns hopkins, georgetown, and cal-berkely overall top 20 in the nation. it is the #1 computer science school in the nation. not that that will mean anything to you judging from your last post.
dumb kids dont get in. unless those dumb kids have a 4.0 and practically ace their SAT's.
as far as pittsburgh goes, if its a great place. ive lived in alot of places, even 2 other countries and other than the czech republic pittsburgh is my favorite. also always is high on those 'most livable city' rankings, even came in first place this year. you're gonna have to drop them an email and tell the experts they are wrong. definatly small town feel, nothing like when i lived in the urban wastelands of jersey and philly.
