EVE Online is the most complex, hardcore, unforgiving, and intimidating MMO to date. With that said, it's also one of the best. Before you play the trial, here are some INCREDIBLY USEFUL tips you absolutely need to know before beginning.

-JOIN A CORP. This is the most important aspect. "This game seems like a grindfest." It IS a grindfest if you're not in a corp. If you're just harvesting resources or killing pirates by yourself, and selling the loot, what good does that do anyone? Put those resources to use in a corp where your skills are appreciated and you can assist a corp's warmachine, or alternatively their diplomacy or production or industry...the options are nearly limitless. Don't mistake one thing though:  Well, like it or not, PvP is the center of EVE Online. Even if you're not engaging in PvP directly, you still have a big impact within a corp. Want to be an industrialist? You make combat ships for your corp. Want to be a miner? You're mining supplies for ammunition, ships, upgrades, etc for your corps pilots. If you're not in a corp, your individual impact on the universe will be minimal. There is a CORP RECRUITMENT channel in the Channel  Listings tab. Go there and find a corp.

-READ THIS. It's a guide explaining everything newbies need to know about EVE. It took away alot of the confusion that was involved in the initial learning curve for me. hammer-eve.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

-USE THIS GUIDE. www.eve-online.com/guide/en/

-READ THE FORUMS. There are hundreds of guide posts there regarding ship configurations, skill training, the nuances of ship-to-ship combat, and more. Invaluable resources. myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp

    I'd just like to add:

    DO THE FRIGGING TUTORIAL!!!

It's not long, it's not hard, it's not boring, and it's the first real guided practice you'll have with the complex UI.

    Good links. :)

Also, the game gets funner as you play longer. There is no way you will be able to grasp the concept of fleet PvP, territorial battles and equipping a ship with lots of slots as a new player.

    I second that!

Also, if you need help, people in your noob-corp. will help you out... at least, they did back when I first started playing. ^^

The tutorial isn't long? If it's the same tutorial I've played it will take 1-2 hours to complete. There is a ton of information there.  Although I do agree it's not hard. It leads the noob by the hand. It can be boring for those who want to get into the action right away. Eve isn't for everyone.

Also know that there is a newbie channel with a lot of players willing to help.  You can learn a lot from people in the newbie corp too.

The new tutorial is the best I have done in any MMO. It teaches you all of the basics. Part of it throws you to an agent to do 2 missions and then he moves you to another agent nearby who you do 10 for. Pretty darn good.

You forgot .. found a reason to play ... at all.

I applaude any one who makes it through the Tutorial.. bring a fork because you'll have more fun poking ya eyes out than going through that snooze fest, I keep EvE installed for the times I just cannot sleep, I turn on the tutorial and BANG! Im asleep.

I cannot comment on the game its self but the Tutorial is a joke and is probably the reason EvE is not as big as it could be.

And I know I lack the intelligence to even play EvE and I should go back to WoW, I saved you guys from saying it.

QFT. There are plenty of corps that will take new players and teach them the ropes. New players are just as valuable a resource as anything else, as they can be taught how to play, and since the game isn't based on twitch-tactics, you don't need to be uberskilled to be good at it.

Yep. There is whole section of the forums dedicated for recruitment if you can´t find corp ingame.

    Check this: myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp

Either make a post saying your looking for corp or contact one of the corps recruiting there.

Wow... I guess Cuptertino was 110% dead on about the arrogance, elitism and intolerance of some Eve players, then, with this comment in his post:

"And I know I lack the intelligence to even play EvE and I should go back to WoW, I saved you guys from saying it."

Pretty bad when the response of some of a game community's members becomes that predictable. So, I guess Eve Online has become the game some people play to feel intellectually superior, then?

And, for the record, while I think Eve's a pretty cool game, I do agree that the tutorial is a yawner - wayyyyyyy too long and drawn out. I felt like I was watching Forrest Gump all over again.. Just when you think it's over... I ended up cancelling it part way through and just got on with the game itself.

Just filling you guys in. The tutorial was very recently shortened quite a bit. You don't have to spend 2 hours following commands from the tutorial drone anymore if you just want to finish the tutorial. They cut it down by like half or something.
