This is the same post in the CoH forum,
I would really like to try out CoH. I heard that it is a really great mmo, but i also heard that about WoW. I heard that there is a refer a friend option for a trial and the referer gets a feww month if the referee buys. If I like I will definitely buy. Thanx in advance

HI there...
Well, I'll do my best to give you my take on it...
For starters, both WoW and CoV/H are what I would consider more "casual friendly" (though of course, that becomes questionable as you get toward end-game in WoW). You can log in, do a mission or two, do some hunting and log out an hour later or whatever and feel like your time was spent "productively" (always an odd term to use regarding games, to me :-).
However, in my opinion, CoV/H is a much more enjoyable and a more complete experience. I can't quite put a finger on what it is overall, but when I play WoW, something feels "off". While I think it's polished and well-designed, it just don't feel like a MMO to me. It feels more like a multi-player, arcade-ish console game - something like that. Maybe it's because Blizzard has designed the game to be so fast-paced and "casual friendly", even soloable, for most of it that I never get that "long journey" feeling from it. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's about as best as I can describe it.
I guess I'm one of those wierd-o's who really doesn't like to level quicky. I prefer to milk a game for all I can. Yet, despite my best efforts not to while playing WoW, it seemed Blizzard had conspired to guarantee I leveled quickly whether I wanted to or not. That might sound crazy, but that's the impression I always get from WoW and it just makes many achievements feel kinda like hand-outs. I get bored with it after about a month, tops. I don't know.. the whole thing just feels very shallow to me.
CoV/H, however, I played back when CoH was still pretty new and before CoV was released. Back then, CoH really didn't have much to offer me, I felt there was just too much repetition, and I got bored with it after a time, so I stopped.
I decided to come back recently, to hang out with a couple rl friends of mine who play regularly and have been having a blast. They've made some huge additions to the game, there's more variety in the game now. Rikti (alien) invasions are like crack to me; I can't stay away from them. Now that I think about it, I think that's something that WoW is missing to me. Rikti Invasions will tend to bring together a significant number of people, team invites are sent out without discrimination over level, gear, anything. Everyone works together to deal with the wave after wave of bombs, then aliens. And at the end, you see "gj!" and "Thanks for the team!" all around. Often a group will stay together to see where the invasion goes next. There's much more sense of community in CoH/V than I've ever seen in WoW. I think that's a big part of it.
As far as customization goes, unlike WoW, and many other MMOs for that matter, the look of your character is completely separate from your stats. And you will have *lots* of fun creating your hero's/villain's look, there are literally thousands of possible combinations and I don't think it's far fetched to say you will never see two toons looking exactly alike (unless it was very deliberate).
Now, on to challenge... I personally find the missions in CoV to be very fun and suitably challenging. The number of enemies increases depending on the size of your team and, while you'll still run into the occasional idiots that plague every MMO's population, people are mostly very cool and it's alot of fun to group up. That said, if the level of challenge in the missions isn't quite enough for you, there's actually a way to change that, by speaking to an NPC who can actually change the difficulty setting... and the difference is noticeable. I was running a mission on "Villainous" setting (the lowest, I believe) and decided to see if I could take on something a bit more difficult. I changed it to the next one up (Malicious, I believe) and the change was immediately obvious - enemies who were hitting me for around 20hp per shot on "Villainous" were hitting me for upwards of 70 on Malicious. Crazy.
Plus, I don't know what it is.. but the game is just fun to play for me. It doesn't have that shallow feel to it that I had in WoW and I never find myself wanting of something fun to do. And again, unlike WoW, I never feel like the xp I'm rewarded is a hand-out. I feel like I've actually done something to earn it. That's a big thing for me right there. I don't feel like Cryptic is conspiring to make me level fast, even if against my will. I feel like they're actually wanting to provide a challenge.
So... while I guess it might seem obvious having a pro-Heroes/Villains post in the game's own forums, believe me, if I had any serious issues with it, I'd be posting them as well. At the moment, though, I'm really just having agreat time.
I'd definitely say go with CoV/H over WoW.
