On August 6th, MMORPG.com hosted our first ever Dev Chat. It was the folks from Lineage II that stopped by to kick off this new program and to answer questions from fans. Today, in case you couldn't make it out for the chat, we publish the logs. Enjoy, and keep an eye out at MMORPG.com for our next Dev Chat.

Is it me or does it look like I missed out on 3 or 5 minutes of conversation ? lol
Yeah, there wasn't really a lot. Players are "noting that" as it seems that many wanted "more".

As was mentioned previously, this was our first run at a Dev Chat. We're hoping to have those devs, and devs from other games, back for a longer period.

I think you guys did fine. People are more concerned about the level of the conversation as a lot of it was essentially "stuff" that we have heard before.
So "yes" I'm sure the playerbase would love to have them back for longer and thank you for your efforts.

being the IRC admin, and involved in the dev chat, seeing both sides (the public channel, and the closed channel(s)) I can say that they did well to even get those questions in.. there were ALOT of duplicate, or similar questions that got deleted or ignored, the main focus seemed to be about CT1.. [NC] also informed Taera of a few things they wont answer, so they were also moderated and removed or skipped...
putting that asside, they had 1 hour, which isnt very long for such events, and 14/15 questions is good, considering some were skipped/removed, and each question was briefly discussed between the Devs in private before an answer was given.. i'd say they did pretty well, thats under 5 minutes per question on average...
Also, yes it was mmorpg.com's first dev chat, they can only improve with time..
And on that note, I must say thank you to all who attended, thank you Taera, and mmorpg.com, thanks to NCSoft for allowing their L2 dev team to do the chat...
Feel free to pop into the IRC at any time for chat about any mmo's!!

I have participated in a ton of dev chats and I must say it is just a giant waste of time. As you say it takes a while to roganise, removing questions, restrictions from the devs on what you can ask. It would be much more efficient to just let mmorpg.com post what questions they want answered, Jon can take the good ones mail em to the devs and whamo you got 30 questions answered instead of 15 and you didnt waste an hour and countless more organising a dev "chat"
I dunno... it really feels like the devs haven't had much to say at all. "Yeah, we know you want an Auction House." and "We also want character transfers." is all I got out of that. They weren't really specific about any of their answers, and they didn't really answer anything except to say "Yes, we hear you." but not "Yes, we hear you and this is what we have planned."
Seems a little... pointless.
Bah, what a bunch of softball questions....none of L2s issues were even mentioned. This game has so many exploitation issues its not even funny and what do you all ask about? Server transfers and new content. Where you guys restricted from talking about certain topics or something?
I knew I should have stayed up for this You guys let them off easy babbling about pie and cake. What kind of cr*p was that? What about the damn bots and the farmer impact on the economy. I really wanted to hear what they have to say about that. Anyone even bother to ask if the new community manager had any intention of NOT banning people from the forums for complaining or even talking about bots?....no....You all rant and rave on the forums about the issues of the game then when you get someone on who can answer some of those hard core problems..... Instead of PKing them you let them go.........
Totally amazed
It's not that people did not ask any questions about bots and RMTs, it's that we weren't allowed to. The MMORPG mods even admited at the end that they skipped any questions about botting because apparently the L2 developers stance on that issue has already been said before.
I also think that most of the answers were too vague, and the stupid questions about pie simply amazed me. Why was it even asked if they were already pressed for time and there were plenty of more important questions that they could have picked.

Well that was pretty stinky of them. The answers to the questions were a joke, there was more rambling about pie and crap then actual game talk. They didn't seem very interested in talking in any event. Nice new community manager.
I think a rock outside could have generated more interest then these clowns. Glad I quit the game, not like they seem to care about it. Alyra was more excited that it was over then anything else.
MMORPG: We apologize if your question was not answered
[NC]Alyra: Yes!

What good would it have done to ask about bots and the RMT? We already know what they'd say - they've said it a thousand times before. IMO, asking about bots/buying would have been just as much a waste of time as asking about pie - because they're not going to give us any new info on that end, just the same old "we're working on it, can't give you details because it'd tip off the farmers" that they always tell us.
And btw, server transfers have been THE most heavily debated/requested/discussed topic on the official forums since the dawn of time - or at least since C1. So yeah, that is a PERFECTLY GOOD question to ask them, especially point blank, the way Smash and Sovrath did, since they've been telling us "eventually" since C1.
I think this new Community Manager, Alyra, is one of the best things that has happened to L2 in a long time. The previous community manager was a forum nazi. From the start, Mistryl would lock threads if she even thought they were talking about something she didn't like. Alyra, on the other hand, is allowing 'free speech' on the boards - discussions about bots, other games, complaints, etc. Threads that would have been locked/deleted under the old CM are now allowed to go on for pages.
Not only that, but it seems like, finally, the NA/EU players are not being ignored. Alyra regularly posts feedback on questions and suggestions made by players - things that used to be completely ignored. Sometimes she's able to give a definite answer, other times she just says "Good idea, I'll pass that on" - but even that is WAY more than we ever got in the past and indicates a huge improvement in the NA player base/NCsoft relations.
In fact, I bet this dev chat came about as a result of having Alyra on the team - I can't imagine that the team would have ever taken part in anything like this back when Mistryl was the community manager. Plus, I believe that a lot of the 'good stuff' going on over there lately is due to Alyra. L2 has run several new events since Alyra joined. One of them sucked, yes, but some others have been very well received. All in all, I think Alyra is breathing some life back into the NA/EU community, making us finally feel like we have a voice and are important to the company. That's something that should have been done long ago, and whether it's actually the case or not I can't say, but I do know that it is a huge step in the right direction.
(Oh, if you will realize that the chat was live, most likely Alyra was exclaiming "Yes!" to Ornery's "Granny Smith if possible" comment. It seems like the dev team was still answering the pie question while MMORPG was wrapping up.)
Anyway, I'm going to have to agree with Airspell. I would much rather have MMORPG collect user questions and send them into the devs than a hosting a dev chat. Doing it the other way would hopefully allow us to ask more varied questions as well as allowing the devs to put more meat in their answers. (I know there are things they cannot reveal and in a live chat they may err on the side of caution and therefore not say as much as they would otherwise.) The only bonus I can see about live dev chats is that, like Sovrath, users can post follow-up questions to things the devs have already said.
And that's the thing, I don't even want server transfers. But it just seemed ridiculous that "we're closer than ever" was going to be an acceptable answer.
I had made up some other "point blank" questions but we were only allowed to submit a question every few minutes and the hour went by quickly.
As far as questions about RMT, those are pretty pointless as what are they going to say? And to the point, there isn't one A grade title that doesn't have RMT.
If there was then all one could say would be "what about game 'x'?" "Why aren't you doing what they are doing".
And truth be told there are less bots now then when I started. The farmers will always be there though. Unless NC makes it so that all transactions are monitored. And how many people would really go for that?

It was a total waste and you know it
The dev chats have always yielded no results. It's nothing but PR. NCSoft NA has little control over the actual development of the game. The same has always been said for server transfers since the question was raised a long time ago. Anyone who seriously plays the game will realize that real issues at hand are being filtered out.
