My questions about Planetside

Greetings.  I played Planetside for awhile.  I played on the Emerald server, Vanu.  My name was Rindel and I got to BR 15 and CR 2.  I have a few questions to you subscribers who know the game pretty well.

First of all, I know I was looking for a few more guns and vehicles, I will list what I have heard and all I need is someone to tell me if what I have heard is valid.

1) Faction specific pistols with an incredible accuracy but slow rate of fire ?

2) Faction specific versions of the Sunderer (Vanu - Leviathian) ?

3) Flamethrower ?

4) New guided missle launcher ?

5) Added Assault and Fortification Enginnering certifications which lets you build new types of turrets and a special robot unit that can deploy tank traps, and shield batteries ?

6) Balanced out Combat Engineering by setting limitations on spitfire turret deployment ?

7) Galaxy gunship and Phantasm ?

I was just wondering what the galaxy gunship and phantasm were.  I heard the phantasm was some sort of cloaked version of the galaxy but nothing beyond that.

I know to use the new guns, you have to be a veteran, but whats a veteran?  Do you have to have the 2-year, 3-year, or 4-year merit badge?

Can someone give me a better idea of what the Assault and Fortification engineering certs have and how much the combined one costs?

My last question is that when I left, the PSR program was still going on.  I know its ended and population levels are at a lull from what I hear.  When will the PSR program come back?  I know a recent dev interview reveals that the teams primary goal is reintroducing the program in one form another, any idea when that will be?  I want to still have the Planetside experience by having lots of people fight in this one battle, but I am afraid that without the reserves program being active, that won't be possible.

Thanks!

Correct, plus secondary firemode which empties the clip, but drains all your stamina

    2) Faction specific versions of the Sunderer (Vanu - Leviathian) ?

Correct, including EMP-strike for the driver and multiple gunner positions (6, I think)

    3) Flamethrower ?

Yup, but has already been nerfed to near oblivion

    4) New guided missle launcher ?

Not guided. You target your prey, lock the distance into the launcher and launch the missile to a point above the prey's head. It explodes into multiple bombs which fall a short way and explode.

    5) Added Assault and Fortification Enginnering certifications which lets you build new types of turrets and a special robot unit that can deploy tank traps, and shield batteries ?

Correct, including EMP-mines, cloaked spitfire turrets and one man manned gun turrets, and also upgrades to the bases' phalanx turrets.

    6) Balanced out Combat Engineering by setting limitations on spitfire turret deployment ?

Limitations for the old CE remain, plus additional limitations for the new CE

    7) Galaxy gunship and Phantasm ?

Were first shown at the SOE fan faire last weekend. Not available to the normal player atm, but will be made available soon (TM)

I was just wondering what the galaxy gunship and phantasm were.  I heard the phantasm was some sort of cloaked version of the galaxy but nothing beyond that.

Phantasm looks like some mutation of a F117, has 4 or 5 passengers, is about as fast as a mosquito, but handles like a galaxy. It has a mosquito gun for the pilot and it can cloak ;)  May be the subject for future nerfs.
Galaxy gunship looks like a modified Galaxy with some big guns on, can't say much further.

I know to use the new guns, you have to be a veteran, but whats a veteran?  Do you have to have the 2-year, 3-year, or 4-year merit badge?

The 4-years veteran get the "elite assault" cert for free, all others have to cert 1 point.

Can someone give me a better idea of what the Assault and Fortification engineering certs have and how much the combined one costs?

Don't nail me on the details, but I think it's 9 or 10 points for the complete package.
Assault: New spitfires (AA, cloaked), EMP mines and the ability to build the normal spitfires in an enemy SOI
Fortification: Phalanx turret upgrades (AA and AV), mobile shield generator/ammo terminal, Tank traps, empire specific one man turret.

At peak times there are at least one poplock to be had. But rumors are that another Fodder program is planned.

  • Engineering cert pack, is that normal engineering, combat, assault, and fortifying for 9 or 10?  Or is that just assault and fortification?

My last question is the same as all the PS players, what is this video about and when can we see the new content that its promising.

Someone had a theory about it being a mercenary race that all the Fodder program people were a part of, the mercenaries would be fighting for whoever needed troops the most.  They could only use common vehicles.

This idea sounds accurate to me, taking into account the PS teams lack of manpower to create a 4th faction.

    Thanks a ton!

    1) Basic Engineering is 3 points. Combat Engineering is 2 points. Advanced Engineering, which is Fortification Engineering and Assault Engineering combined, is 5 points. Thats a total of 10 points for everything engineering has to offer.

    2) New content is now available to all those who attended the Fan Faire event. For everyone else, the new vehicles should be available within the week.

    3) They were actually the returned Vanu; their arrival was temporary.

  • So all this talk of a new empire is not true.  It won;t ever be seen by subscribers?

No clear statement from the devs about their plan to fit the "Black Ops", as they were called at the fan faire event, into the existing world. At the event the Black Ops wore Vanu uniforms with alternate coloring and the new logo, but used VS weaponry plus a ridiculous samurai sword.  Rumors are:

    > that outfits will be able to impersonate the Black Ops for some amount of time, after paying some amount of outfit points.

    > that the new Fodder people have only access to the Black Ops and are again limited in BR and CR ranks

    > the Black Ops are excusively for event use

  • The whole "We are near" thing keeps leaving subscribers in the dark.  There are broadcasts in the game and the video is a good indication of "They" being revealed sometime soon, by subscribers.

I personally hope its a new Fodderside program because I won't come back until the population is higher.

There are plans to bring back the Reserves program, but I don't think it has anything to do with this event. There's been no mention of it lately, and that seems like the type of thing they would hype for awhile.

  • Who do you think "they" are then?  It is quite clear that "They" will be revealed to subscribers in the near future, but there has been no indication of who "they" are.

Can't argue with what you said about hyping the Fodderside program before it actually comes out, that seems like the SOE thing to do.

I just came back about a week ago after a four year absence and I'm having a blast.

I played many MMOs during that time and saw and experienced many iterations of PvP but I soon realized that I always kept comparing them to the best PvP experience I had had up to that point - Planetside. The others were always missing something that I couldn't put my finger on.

So I originally stopped playing PS because though I was having fun, none of my friends played and there were times that it could be tough to find a good battle.

Well, after playing yet another game with PvP that was lacking, I finally decided to check up on PS to see what was happening. The population had certainly dwindled but there seemed to be a solid core of players that still actively played. My biggest concern was if there were really enough players to sustain some good battles.

I finally took the plunge and found to my delight that the PvP was as good as ever with the tweaks and balances they made to encourage focused battles (Lattices, continent locks, etc.). I've been "re"-playing for a week now and every night I've logged on I've had no problem finding action. Base captures, base defenses, tower battle, large open field manuevers, small outdoor skirmishes, etc. The population seems healthy for all three factions on my server (Markov) as evidenced by the size of some of the battles I've been in already. I certainly never have to look far for a good battle which was my biggest concern when deciding whether to come back or not.

I've already had two friends join me and a third just d/led yesterday. We've been having a blast running around as a small squad supporting our empire and we feel the best is yet to come.

Oh, and if you're still on the fence after my testimonial, there are a couple of fansites offering 30 day Full Free Trial promotional keys. There are no strings or limits attached. Check out this link for the site where I got my free trial:

  • I have tried getting one of the CD Keys but I havent gotten an activation email for the newly made account on their website.  It has been nearly 24 hours.

You made my decision for me though, I will wait a week for the Gal Gunship and Phantasm to come out and then I will resubscribe, regardless of whether "They" are revealed or not.
