So I was looking to get a second job because well frankly I'm not making enough money from one job. So I was looking around at stores like EB (now Gamespot), and so on, and then one of my friends told me about Circuit City. He said they get commision from whatever you sell (i.e. you get 3% of that $2,000 T.V. you just sold). But then I called Circuit City and well I was sent to the support line for some reason and I asked them if that commision thing is true. She said no its not, but well I dont know wether to trust her or not. So, does anyone know? and if not anyone know of a good place to work? ....I was thinkin about being a delivery boy....

they went to strictly hourly in roughly 2002, you still get commsion only from extended warrenties and maybe credit app thats it. I worked there in sales in late 80's early 90's and it was great. But nothing more than a Best Buys nowadays
Circuit City makes commish on nothing, and the hourly isn't that good. I worked there for almost a full year, not sure why. If you are good with people and sales get a job selling cellphones. Most cellphone jobs are at least some commission, and you can make a lot more there than at a normal retail job. I work at a Verizon retailer on pure commission and make at least $3000 on a good month. Most of the jobs are something like $8 hourly with a tiered commission. My last job was anohter Verizon retailer and I got paid $8 hourly plus 5-25% commission depending on the amount of $$ I pulled in for the company that month. At that last job I made $5000 after taxes in December.
Man Whore is not a dishonorable profession either...
You don't get commission from Circuit City. They used to give it, but then they fired 3400 of their employees who got commission and now they are hiring for strictly hourly wages. If your store isn't doing a good job hiring people expect to work full time with overtime. I know many part time workers at my CC had to work 50 hrs a week for a while and now work 40. CC is severly understaffed. At my CC you got an hour break only if you worked an 11+ hour shift...anything less, like a 10 1/2 shift gets you a mere 30 minutes.
It can be hot working at CC with all the giant TVs and the computers giving off heat. Expect to get dehydrated during the long hours because you can only take a chug of water or soda if you walk all the way over to the break room....if you can find time.
CC has a "blueprint" they want you to carry around. Even if you're an expert at computers or whatever, you have to ask the customer their name and then ask all the questions on the blueprint and check the answers off. Then you hand the blueprint to the customer after you're done with them. It has Firedog services on one side and the type of computer they will need on the other (because you checked everything off after finding out what they will use it for). Same goes for TVs. It sucks and feels awkward.
Expect to work a half hour after you're scheduled to go home if you are working till close. You need to close the drawers, make sure all products are straight, tagged (ugh)...ect. Then you need to be "okay'ed" to go home.
Expect to deal with stressful customers. Have fun with picking up the phone and hoping it's an easy situation to deal with. Have fun using a computer from the stone ages to register people with, it's not the most intuitive system to deal with....God help you if you're in Customer Service, but sales is tough as well. You know this stuff wouldn't be so bad if I was taught everything to begin with, but no, instead I learn the basic fundementals and then I get to learn as I go and make the customers not very happy.
I had good pay, some management was nice and some were neutral to me, and nice coworkers (except one guy). Unfortunately the mechanics of how the store operated was awful imo.
I'm not sure if my situation is unique to my store or if other stores work much differently. I had to leave because it was simply unhealthy working there.

You should try CostCo I hear that they are very good to their employees. At least they are up here in Canada, I would imagine it being the same in the states. Of course the labour laws are different. Check it out though.
Cheers.
Try Ultimate Electronics. I believe they are still commission based.
Bingo, or you could try Walmart in Mexico, they dont even pay their baggers money :P
I didn't know Circuit City went hourly for their sales staff. I sold car stereo systems for about 2 years at Circuit City 10 years ago and was making like $35,000 a year. There is no point to being in sales unless you make commission on everything you sell. They paid us a higher commission on more profitable items plus we got a SPIF, a fixed dollar amount as incentive to sell a specific model.
sad
I'm not sure how national these companies are, but I'm pretty sure Car Toys and Magnolia Hi-Fi still pay commission as well.
