MMORPG.com, is becoming one large advertising site, and less informative everyday

the new revamp on game ratings is disgusting ...

instead of doing what people have asked for close to 2 years and RESET the ratings, so they can be accurate , MMORPG.com leaves the ratings and makes them even MORE indistiguishable ... by changing the system into a 5 point bar , bringing ratings closer to together and making it  even HARDER to tell the really stinky games from the really good ones ...

on top of that .. the bans for speaking your mind out, about a game, have been piling up.  you can no longer express your real opinion on this site if it in fact may "endanger" the sales of a game ....

this site has become nothing more than a medium or platform for mass advertising from MMO companies that just plain suck ...

when i first came to this site, i thought of it as a place i could go to learn truthful information about a game, in order to judge whether or not i wanted to waste my money and time playing it ...

you can no longer do this from MMORPG.com .. this has become a STRAIGHT GAME HYPING site ... nothing more

What are you talking about? The game ratings are still based off of a 1-10 points system.... Am I not understand you correctly?

Agreed, I personally only visit the site for its giveaways.

The site has to make money somehow. Would you rather pay for joining? Would you have them beg for funds like a perpetual PBS fund-raiser? If you know of a way to pay for the upkeep of the site, make payroll, etc without one of the above methods, speak up!

Game ratings are never a good guide because they're not reliable. If you have a peer rating system where people come in and vote, then you have "ballot stuffing" where you not only rate your game high but a game you never played being rated low. The ratings in magazines and on TV may be better but there's no way to disprove they aren't taking bribes. (Sorry people, not to imply anyone is buying ratings but you can't prove it doesn't happen.) In the end you can't find out if a game is worth buying on a rating alone. You have to dig deeper.

You can speak your mind here, just avoid flaming and swearing and don't give away secrets, then you'll be OK.

Well it would be nice to see this team go down their own games list and re-review the games and how they are after numerous patches at current dates/standings of play.

As is their games list is very comprehensive but some reviews are out of date, especially as im noticing people are coming to the end of their current game lifecycle, ie had enough of eq2 or world of warcraft and are looking for a change or more likely something to tide them over till the new gen of mmo comes along.

Or perhaps a community effort of re-reviewing the games list with prizes for best reviews with one given to the most amusing or the most informative....

edited:for a constructive critisism with an idea instead of just negative bullshit like half the posts i see.

Do everyone a favor and don't come back. You have posted 1 time too many.

Advertisements on a website! That can't be true!

If you or anyone else seriously thinks this site is overloaded with ads then you sir are not well informed.

  • DeadEndDeadEnd Member Posts: 98

I disagree with you. MMORPG.com has done good for changing the game list, although it takes some time getting used to. I do approve to the fact that they should add numbers apart from the bars, but if they choose not too, then that's their decision. About the advertising, I don't think it's all about advertising. They're advertising for MMORPG's, but that's what this site is all about, so I don't think that's strange.

The only thing about this site that they should do something about is: add more games, they're sometimes a bit too selective.

It's really, really hard to get banned here...

Seriously, who remembers a month back when the one guy was spamming the general forum with posts about how much I suck, the site sucks, the staff and content sucked, etc etc. I think get got to make around 90 posts that did nothing but bash the site before he got banned.

Best of luck finding a new site though, hope it's more to your liking.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

I dunno... getting banned didn't seem to hard in my case.

Learn to use the rating system NOOB!!!  Anyone knows that anything in the previous rating system under a 7 sucked.  So really now you only have to look for a 4 star game to try out.  Its actually kind of like picking a hotel.  A 1 star MMORPG will be crap, and a 4 star MMORPG is like getting descent service.

Someone was under the impression mmorpg.com was serious gaming journalism ? They mainly repost news from other sites or post whatever the given game publishers wants them to report.  I'm here mainly for the forums and the giveaways cause there is nothing else this site really offers.  The reviews are questionable to say the least, the ads are ads same as any other website so I dont care bout that.

Listen i been here from its infant days.We have talked with the admin and others over this numerous times.

This site is totally free.Without Ads we would have a premium site and have to pay for it.They have to make money and yes like any buisness if they become popular they have more wanting to run ads.

Ok so the Ads are more.Big deal!Let admin enjoy the success of a site he worked so hard to bring to us.Unlike the rest generic mmorpg site this one actually works well and still bothers to do interviews, reviews and competitions.

  • CaldrinCaldrin Member UncommonPosts: 4,505

yup this site is free so they gotta make cash some way...

maybe they could offer a paid up account where the ads would be removed who knows..

that ads really dont bother me..

Do you really care if the website has alot of adverts, it has too make money to function, and it provides the information without the adverts being too 'in your face'.

I think its fine the way it is, unless you want them to go the ways of fileplanet or gamespot and charge you a monthly fee just to be able to access the movies or competitions.

    Mozilla + Ad Blocker Plug-In = GG

I've been pretty active here for a while, and I have never had a problem with bannings.   The only thing I have seen that mods not like is insulting other posters.  You can cry about it all you want, this is still the best MMO site on the net.  If you don't like the forums, go read the blog section.  You will be hard pressed to find a site with this many people moderated so loosely.  Good luck to you.

MMORPG.com does not cover anything that would result in an unbiased info driven site.  The site isn't funded by some international gamers society.  MMORPG.com is a site run by individuals.  They take time out of their day to moderate, write, and comment on the goings on of the site.  In order to keep doing this, the site must generate its costs.

I, for one, am glad that the site is up.  Although the hate for some games goes unmoderated (WoW), I still find the users to generally have interesting things to say.  I just ignore the adverts.  The games they advertise are never any good.

I dont really care about advertisements.

But, I have noticed the posts in the News section are some of the most uninformed reports/reviews out of any of the sites on the internet.

Also, the overbearing moderation of the forums has either alienated (banned) or driven off a lot of the entertianing posters.  It is sad and will only get worse.

Make your own MMO site then Mr. Perfect. I find the site to be perfectly fine. Hosting is expensive.

  • YakriYakri Member Posts: 30

1)i barely even realise the adverts are there most of the time, how is this supposed to be a problem.

    2) moderation on the forums seems just fine, after all they didn't ban the OP or delete the thread

3)the reviews here are quite helpful and informitive.

4)the new rating system is just like the old one, only more informitive,  whats wrong with that?

    5) MMORPG.com Rocks!
