Why expansions always will raise the level cap

I have seen quite some posts here where people are saying that a level cap increase ruins WoW.
However, Blizzard is forced to increase the level cap with each expansion, at least as long as they release new high level areas. If they wouldn't, they would break the very nature of the WoW universe.

Why? The level a character has is basically the game's way to lock one out from certain areas of the game. As we all know the "Almighty Level" is the fundamental force in WoW that drives you to enjoy the game's content in a certain order. Without levels there would be no real meaning for me to kill these 20 forest bears. Unless I'm looking for a shoot-em-up game with target locking :)

The only way to break free from the increasing level cap mania is to create a game with no character levels at all.

Eve does that of course, but then there are skill levels (and ISK) instead that matter.
Another way would be to create a completely quest driven game. But with no leveling to look forward to the quests must have much higher standard than WoW's quests have right now. A quest driven game gives you less freedom of choice and we're basically back to single player RPGs and adventure games (like Zelda and Monkey Island).

And this would be the fundamental flaw (IMO) of WOW and other games designed like this.

But I agree...Blizzard's chosen to go down this road, so they've really got to stick with it.  People who don't like level cap increases (like me) will have to go find another game to play.

All good points LittleStar12, but Blizzard could just avoid this kind of stuff altogether and be massively more readily excepted if instead of raising the level cap they would do a mass introduction of hero classes on your current characters instead of how they're doing this Deathknight bullshit.

The problem being that you use your regular character to unlock that character in character creation in order to play them, meanwhile Blizzard should be implementing a hero class system like FFXI's. Doing that would have been an acceptable way to raise the level cap by however many levels Blizzard felt was nessicary for the "extension" of your already battle-worn characters without running the work that was put forth for them already.

I have no problem with the lvl cap being raised with each expansion as long as new quests are also added to help you level up and not just plain grinding.

As far as new hero classes go, i'd just like to say this. If the game is supposedly meant to be balanced, then a lvl 55 Death Knight should, technically, be equal to all other classes who are lvl 55 too. The word 'hero' however suggests that this class should be better than other non 'hero' classes. If that is the case, surely everyone and their grandmother will play a new 'hero' class because they will actually be better than same lvl characters. On the other hand, if these 'hero' classes are indeed balanced to be equal to existing, same lvl classes then there is nothing 'heroic' about them at all, bar the fact that 1) you have to unlock it before you can make a character as this class & 2) you wont start at lvl 1, but at lvl 50+ [not yet know what lvl it will start at].

However, as existing class balances leave alot to be desired (i play a warrior and i'd say magic users are technically worth at least 4 lvls higher than their existing lvl in comparison to warriors of their same lvl) I dont rekon blizzard will balance these hero classes right, and they will indeed be better than other non hero classes so everyone will be playing one as soon as they unlock it. However only time will tell.

Oh, and if they are balanced, calling them 'hero' classes is false advertising imo, since they really are only new regular classes! They should be called 'new unlockable classes' in that case.

I agree, level cap increases in itself is not the problem. It only reflects the underlaying game mechanics. So I think that the level increase is a good thing, since it reflects the new content being added. And I do like new conent :)

I agree with you about the hero classes. They should call them unlockable classes instead.

who says they absolutely have to add new higher level pve content? the last expansion was pve focused and raised the level cap, why not focus now on pvp and just add the hero classes and maybe some new quests or something?

Ive never been very objective towards dev's of any games, i am not a game bash er but this doesn't seem to be very smart IMO. i don't see the point of making all these expansions if every single one makes the one before it totally obsolete.

i understand they have to add new content and raise the level cap every once in a while, but every expansion? that just doesn't seem very smart at all IMO.

god forbid should they work on the pvp aspect of wow which is totally broken right now and needs all the help it can get. nope, just more pve content shoved down our throats and a new lvl cap, that will fix everything!

That's what i loved about eve.You never had a feeling of getting at the max EVER.Makes the way you experience the game a whole lot better if you ask me.

I know back in the old days when DAOC etc just where around most people didn't mind being at max level for a while. Now most people powergame to get to the max level as fast as possible and the after a day at max start complaining about end content.

Sometimes i wish the old days back when people just where happy to be part of the mmorpg experience.....  I'm getting old i guess.

Sure, they could only cater to the PvP crowd. But I don't any expansions will ever change the fact that WoW was designed as primarly a PvE game. And a PvE game is often not a very good PvP game.
As long as people want new areas to explore, and I do think that the majority wants that, they have to raise the level cap.

But they have new DANCES!!! DANCES PEOPLE!!! Seriously tho, I came back to WoW because I'm pretty much bored and got all my stuff ready and raiding again, now they're coming with another expansion now lv80. Anything under T5 say gooood bye! Sadly I probably will be playing WotLK while playing WAR.

I personally don't like the fact that they make all instances and gear under that expansion 100% useless (not really the gear because it does help in leveling a lot, but the instances are obsolete). Rumor has it that they're going back to the 40 mans and fixing them up so people will have a reason to go there.

I don't really like the PvP in WoW. I only really like playing AV because I don't have 3 locks, 2 rogues, 2 hunters, and 1 warrior beating the crap out of me in 2 seconds (with fear and stun locks!). I liked the epic battles of AV and not the 1v1 or so in the other BGs. If they had more of this kind of PvP I would love it, it could happen but even with siege weapons I still see it turning into another AV styled special olympics (no offense).

    Actually..

they are called Hero classes because:

    1) they are modeled after one of the Heroes from Warcraft 3

    2) you start at an heroic level, 55, 60 or what not instead of being a farmer with a sword at level 1.

Nothing to do here about being more powerful than others.

Blizzard have stated from Day1 that the level cap would increase over time. I thinks its good and intrigral to keeping the game fresh and helps with adding more content.

As a guy above mentioned they are Hero Class because this class is unique for a certain hero in WoW lore. It's not hero because it is somewhat overpowered compared to others, just different. Could be called Hero's Class or in this case Arthas' Class.

Well by your logic, when any character class reaches lvl "55, 60 or what not" they become 'hero' classes. I would hope blizzard would indeed not make these 'hero' classes more powerful than others for the reasons i stated in my original post. But alot of people would agree with me that the use of the term 'hero' could suggest to some people that its better than other classes in some way, when infact it is not better, only different in how it is unlocked and why it is called 'hero' class in the 1st place (because its modeled after one of the Heroes from Warcraft 3)

Blizzard should really stress these points in its information about what these hero classes indeed are.

I don't see what else  they could add to WoW without increasing the level cap. They went 2 years with just releasing new raid dungeons and a good percentage of the players never went in them. I don't know why people are so upset about a level cap increase now. I didn't hear much complaining about when it was increased to 70.

As far as hero classes are concerned, back in 2004 I had the impression that hero classes would be the method of advancing characters passed 60. That each class would have a hero class and when you hit 60, you'd have a quest chain to do and then your character changed into the hero class. I think that idea was scrapped because they could never balance the original classes. I think everyone will have a deathknight, but I don't see how you could do without healers and some type of CC.

I don't think people complained about the level cap being raised to 70 because they had no way of knowing beforehand how bad this would be implemented in TBC. With hindsight people are now fully aware of what another level cap raise means.

WOW was fantastic from lvl 1-60 and i really enjoyed the endgame raiding (for a while) but endgame for me means exactly that. For me personally as a hunter finishing MC a few times and completing my epic bow quest seemed a natural end to the game. I just wish i had finished there and not hung on for months waiting for TBC to be released, paying £8.99 a month whilst being absolutely bored out of my skull. TBC seemed great for a few days, even quests seemed innovative with flying/bombing quests etc. but they pretty much stopped after the first quest hub and the endless grinding began again, then the realisation that all you'd done in Azeroth was now obsolete.

I got 18 great months out of WOW and 6 not so good and would class it as one of my top 3 favourite games of all time but everything has to end eventually and it appears that WOW has now ran its course. I just hope that one of the games about to be released can take up its mantle, learn from its mistakes and  make something even better.

all things you think you "know" about new expansion i can say that you really dont know...untill Blizz say so all things written here are just speculations.

People are leaving and comming to game...it is normal that someone get bored...i stoped Battlefield 2142 and gave account to brother...but i find WoW still interesting, and clearing Kara is still thrill...while on other side i dont do 5man stuff...i find them boring.

I think WoW have much to offer...if you dont want PvE you can do PvP...for example...to get 3 pcs of veteran PvP set i needed maybe a week of BGs....if you want more...go for arenas.

What will we get on lvl 80. Who knows...talent, haircut and new spells...but im sure that is not all.
