No, but after Lotro's advertisement, I think he is damn annoying though.

Keep in mind the man started writing the stories in his notes and mind in the trenches of WWI. You tend to think of your fellow soldiers a bit closer when people are melting and blowing up around you. Personally, I think of my best friends that closely as well and I am purely hetero. Sounds like someone comes from a generation where men weren't supposed to have emotions.

Frodo and Sam are not gay. This has been going on for ages, this 'debate'. Spock and Captain Kirk aren't gay either. All these accusations are nothing more then homophobic guys trying to justify they're lack of emotions, even to women. Did Frodo bang Sam? In the movie it certainly looked like he wanted to, but no, don't even bring this up.

I think he is joking here.Anyway Tolkien was an English professor in one of ow-er leading Private universities. when he wrote this he did say later on that he wanted to create a 'Modern Classical' novel. Which is also why the books has some very sophisticated and pretty nicely done songs in them.
That's one reason the story is like it also the guy served in WW1 in the trenches so was very familiar with the comrade bonds that do form among soldiers in a stressful and dangerous situation so he put that in there too. Also apparently The Shire is based on England and the story is in a way about some British people going out in the world to be British heroes in distant lands.
