Translation: A Dutch hacker who broke into the computersystems of a Greek gamestudio and a number of American companies, has been sentenced to 4 months imprisonment. Also, a 50 hour task sentence was imposed upon him.

The 22-year old Peter de R from Beusichem was arrested in April and confessed that one of the things he did was nosing around in the mailboxes of Greek gamesdesigner Aventurine. From their servers, where he gratefully used a leak in the php-script, he apprehended a development version of the yet to be released game Darkfall Online. That lead him to files with log-in names and passwords for access to the testversion of the game. The security of the other systems which he broke into, was also supposedly weak but that, according to the judge, was no reason to commit said actions. From gamesdeveloper Zenimax and securitycompany Inca Internet, the man also was able to apprehend code. These companies have issued damage claims. Whether these issues will be granted, will likely be determined in a seperate, civil procedure. De defence supposedly had little to bring into the matter, because De R has confessed being responsible for nearly all accusations

Found it on the Darkfall forums

Aventurine claims for for 15000€ damage.

    Hopefully his one phone call will be to MMORPG.com....

    "MMORPG.com, this is Peter. I'm in jail, but I managed to see this before I left. Darkfall IS in development, no need to worry. Ok, goodbye."

    Maybe then we could all stop holding our breath? hehe

    Kinda thought the same thing, he should report about the state of the game.

    Had he lived in the USA and gotten cought here, his prison sentence would be MUCH MUCH longer. The US has no tolerance for Hackers/Cyber Terrorists.

    Now that I think about it...

    Rather bad news that some 22-year old dude can hack into the game that easily ^_^

    I mean, if Aventurine can't even barely secure their game in this really closed state...well...

    @Peter:

    Its funny how people who hate Darkfall spend so much time talking about Darkfall.

    I guess being a fat troll means having no friends, no girls, and nothing better to do than spew hate on internet forums..

    4 months?? That is so ridiculous.  If that is the standard sentence it's time to move to the netherlands for anyone that wants little risk for potentially big rewards.

    Now now, even Valve got hacked when developing Half Life 2...set the game's release back by almost a year...and they were a much bigger company at that time and should have known better.

    Think of it this way, they learned how important security is at an early point in their companies history and can improve it going forward.

    Too bad he got caught though....maybe he would have put up a playable demo   (just kidding...hackers are vermin....and should be dealt with as such)

    well he must have been so frustrated after finding this:

    #include <stdio.h>

    int main(void) {

        printf("Hello World
    ");

        return 0;

    }

    that he went and turned himself to the police.

    Bull, he could have gotten a copy of a text file called "This space reserved for Darkfall in 2028", he would have been convicted still because he hacked to get it.

    Some guy hacking their crap does not prove that there is any sort of actual game.

    Even though the court heard that the guy stole a working pre-beta version of the game and used a user and password to log into it illegally?

    Sounds like a game to me ;)

     Do you guys think of these tired "Go back to WoW" replies by yourselves, or does it require a team effort to come up with the proper number of synaptic responses? At least now we know if it ever does release (yeah, right) they'll have to rate Darkfall "E for everyone" just to make sure it's not over your maturity levels.
