Wait as long as you can.  Q3 is HUGE for Technology vendors and when new gear comes out  Todays top of the light becomes tomarrows runner up, and 2nd best, prices are always better then #1.  Intel  has released some great new processors and their quads have come down a lot.  I am really liking the Q6600 for the Price.   I'd still hold off another month or two if you can.  Just my 2 Copper.

You can go to Dell and go under the Media computers. They run about 450 Pounds to 550 pounds. Personally I'd go with the Inspiron 530 for 550 pounds or get one of the XPS gaming systems for 200 pounds more. Sorry can't make the symbol for Pound on my keyboard.

Normally I wouldn't recomend Dell but for your budget you will get the most effective package. Or you could shop around your local PC stores and see whats on special. The Inspiron 530 has 2gig of ram and a dual core proccessor. you can upgrade to  Nvidia 8600 for 49 pounds. Only a 256mb graphics card but it should run the game. Or stick with the one it comes with until youi can afford a real graphics card.

With Christmas near and new releases driving prices down I wouldn't buy until the first part of October. You will get the best prices then.

best way to get bang for your buck is build your own.  If you dont want to i may suggest www.cyberpowerpc.com, they have good prices and MEAN machines.

The direction i went was AMD.  It was a HELLA lot cheaper and the processors (fx62 and amd6000) are not that much slower then INTEL's Core 2 Extreme.  about 300 bucks will get you the best processor.  The downfall is that AMD runs HOT HOT HOT. Other than that a 8800 or 2 (i went with the 640 GTS) will make gaming nice, and like previously stated the longer you wait the lower the prices, but the more you will be tempted to buy the new stuff LOL.

If ANYTING spend $$ on a good Motherboard, having that will help with future upgrades :).  (i always suggest ASUS above anything else)

Building your own is most often the best , however, cyberpower is good so is http://www.ibuypower.com   i ran through a config that cost 1k ish (dollars) at both and compaired them ... i have to say that ibuypower at first looks cheaper, however, my cyberpower comp is a bit better than ibuypower one i configured for only 100 dollars more.. Whats more is that i got well over 200 dollars in rebate from the cyberpower site thus its $100 less than the ibuypower config... end verdict ... cyberpower > ibuypower.  (not just in money wise i really have much nicer hardeware from the cyberpower site , PSU is greater [by a ton], much better ram, and better case cooling). Only down side ... the 3-4 rebates one would have to fill out... still bit better comp.

Tho seeing that your in the UK i think you need to look else where. HAHA.

I don't think Ibuypower operates in the UK from memory. But Cyberpower does.

These guys are good too, with a configurator: http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/cc.aspx?bn=10306 just click the customise part.

If you buy Dell at a lower price you will pay for it in future because in many you are really limited in upgrading.

Normally true I suppose but I don't think there is much coming until early next spring in terms of system hardware.  This year is kind of a big shake down year with Vista coming out - next year things will ramp back up I believe (although in a real way things are slowing as they can't just crank out the GHz like they have in the past).

Best bet is allways to build your own, get a pal to help you build your own, or get a local shop to build to your specification - some of the sites metioned that do custom PCs are OK I suppose so long as you stick with reputable ones.  Avoid the OEMs (Dell, Sony, HP, etc)for gaming rigs (if not for all rigs) as the cheaper components they use will not serve you well over time and thier propensity to use proprietary components and design will make it far harder top upgrade over time.  OEMs also charge more, allot more. for the higher end hardware when they do use it (and typically they are only using the good stuff in premo spots you would notice but still using the cheap stuff where you wouldn't).

That should be fine, not great.  Your weakness is the system RAM (1G is a bit low even in XP for top games) and the video card is OK but the 320MB versions are showing signs of really missing having at least 512 on board.
