I am sure there is at least one person on every forum that knows everything about every single game, so please keep your "that's old news" remarks stuffed in your rectum. I follow the gaming news pretty regularly and this is the first I have heard of this game so I am sure there will be plenty of others for whom this is new information.
PlanetSide is the best game I have ever played, period. I don't play any longer for reasons I won't bother getting into but I keep hoping for a new MMOFPS to be announced. Fallen Earth might be fun but it is a small indie project that is much more RPG-focused with lots of skills, leveling, quests, crafting, and PvE content. Huxley sounds like total crap to me. And that's it, those are the only two non-fantasy MMO games announced with true FPS PvP combat.
So I navigated to http://www.mmofps.com/ to see if someone had started a site similar to this site but with an FPS focus. What I found was a locked web site belonging to a game called Mercurial 2169.
Here is some info on the game from a GameSpot article that is 17 months old.
He doesn't say whether it is a MMOFPS, but given his background, I am hopeful.

Correction: after a little digging, I realize that I have incorrectly deduced a link between this game called Mercurial 2169 located on mmofps.com and whatever project Romero is working on (as mentioned in the GameSpot article I linked above).
It seems they are unrelated which may be good news since Romero seems to be a bit unpopular in some circles. Either way, at least there is some game in development which I had never heard of called Mercurial 2169. The fact that this game is on a site called mmofps.com sure makes me think it is indeed following in PlanetSide's footsteps. Then again, anyone with ten bucks can lock down a domain name. This could be nothing more than vapor.
Boy, do I feel silly.
it still makes no sense why they haven't made or started making a sequel.
PS is by far the best shooter game ever...because is MMO. Sure some shooter games have some great features that PS doesn't have, PS still beats them. Not only cause its MMO, because it has so much depth to it. It has character development, command chains, and strategy. sure some noobs to the game may not realize it...but choosing base targets is ALOT of strategy involved. not to mention strategy for fighting various enemies.
I'm glade to see i am not the only one hoping for a sequel, or similar style game. we should start a petition to SOE to make part 2 lol
IMO, SWG should have been the sequel to PS. SWG should have started with the PS engine, and built from there, rather than trying to be another EQ clone.
It should have been 3D, had combat vehicles, decent ranged combat, not had so much focus on killing "monsters," and should have been released a year later.

I was looking through the forums and spotted this game after hearing about it when I asked someone if an MMOFPS had ever been made. It looks very interesting even if the graphics are outdated. However, there is another MMOFPS for certain in th works. Its called Huxley and is set to release on XBOX 360 and PC (seperately) within the next year or so. In fact, MMORPG.com has a bunch of screenshots as well as stories pertaining to it. Also theres a good amount of fan sites already up before its even released where you can find videos, information of the game mechanics, and numerous speculations on it. So, I dunno about the game your speaking of but Hexley seems to fit the description of a Planetside-esque game.
Huxley won't support large battles as PS does. Currently Planetside locks population at about 350 (no real number known) players per map. At the last fan faire event, they pushed the player number up to about 800 on one map. Yes, it lagged badly at times, but hell, that was huge fun to see so many players fighting.
Huxley features 4vs4 or 8vs8 player battles, but sports PvE content, too, so it's not really a MMOFPS, but a PvE-Shooter with Multiplayer PvP.
Planetside still has no real competition out there, and aside from smaller projects like Lost colony, I don't know of any game in development that goes the way of massive PvP FPS battles.
just out of curiousity, is there a standard definition out there for mmofps that says they cant have PvE? and if so, im missing the logic there.. FPS games always have a PvE mode, so why wouldnt MMOFPS?
The Agency, being developed by SOE, is being sold as a "shooter first". If you go to the forum drop down list boxt at the top, you can go to its forum.
you have a point there. I didn't "define" anything, just wanted to highlight the differences between PlanetSide and Huxley. If I wanted to define a MMOFPS, I wouldn't define it by having PvE content or not, but the number of Players involved per battle/map, even considering the persistent world Huxley will have. As good as the concept of Huxley may be (still waiting for the beta as many others) I just don't see the first "M" of "MMO" fulfilled, as long as I count the players per battle.

I think you've got a point. If the biggest PvP Huxley offers is 8v8 I think they're in for a rude awakening...I can jump on 2 year old COD2 and play with 50 other people.
It is rather insane that no-one has created another true MMOFPS since PS. There is a void in the market that needs filling and allot of money to be made thats for sure. At the rate its going shit im thinking of making my own. anyone got a spear couple of million?
loved planetside, playing EVE
It's quite simple:
PS didn't hit big numbers thus the bean counters think it's a dead market. What the bean counters don't see is that PS was doing great till SOE started monkeying around with core combat and threw combat completely out of balance with BFR's. Classic Planetside was an awesome game and was rapidly growing in players till then.
It has/had two problems:
1) The monthly fee is too high
2) It's published by SOE which really hampers it's ability to get market presence in today's gamer world. Most people now think of SOE as the 'satan' of game companies. They will often flat out refuse to buy a game if it has anything to do with SOE.
If EA or Blizzard did an MMOFPS "successor" to PS it would probably be a huge hit.
Battlefield 3042 Online anyone?
"A ship-of-war is the best ambassador." - Oliver Cromwell
Never. EA is worse than SOE.
I haven't seen nor heard of any new games like PS but one can only hope! I have resubbed to PS many times because I end up missing the origional style it has.
Of course there are plenty of FPS games that support 8X8 and even 16X16 players. But as said previously in this forum they don't have the depth and strategy PS has. And even 32 players is not enough to be considered MMO
Again I can only hope a sequel or similar game is developed. I would definatly want to subscribe.. Maybe something fantasy based.. Remember Hexxen?
huxley is going to support 128 players 64vs64, maybe bigger. Not sure, although i am sure about the 64vs64
Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online
Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

If you feel up to it. There is a game called War Rock (not my cup of tea) that is a FPS set in modern times, and you have a persistent character. It is very similar to CS only with classes. And by classes it just means what weapons you use.Oh, and Hellgate is amazing.
