First of all, I couldnt understand why so many people thought this game would be the killer game of all other mmo games...I personally liked UO's 2d graphics more than this game, there wasn't as much quests as I'd hope for as well...Combat was ok because it was similar to many other mmo's...There was only one thing that I really thought was different and NEW from any other mmo's tho...When you read the quest and you have trouble finding an NPC you can click on the name of the NPC and there was a bright light that points directly into the air (kinda like those big high beam lights that moves around the sky at casino and night clubs etc) So basically if you're really really far or close you'd be able to find the NPC...(i had trouble finding some because there wasnt enough info on where to find them)

Ic.. Coz there show's monthly fee so I thought it's P2P.. So it's free.. Tat's good, I can try it out.. Since there's no other good games and still waiting for 2moons..
Well, if you are referring to the, "You can fool some of the people...." quote, it is actually Abraham Lincoln, not B.T Barnum, (though often ascribed to him).
Look, DnL is not a front line MMO. It has major performance issues, and it's UI and character, armor, equipment models are all similar to DAoC. (in other words, about 3-4 years behind the curve).
The company has major trust issues from past broken promises, and questionable billing practices. (Read these forums to get a sampling) However, I have found that there is a definate bias in the posts here so, 'caveat emptor'
It has many unique features, though only about 50 - 60% are actually in the game at the moment. Whether or not the rest ever gets implimented is problematic.
They also have proprietory legal issues with the designer of the graphics engine which *may* shut down the entire operation (depending on the outcome).
However, the court system grinds very slowly, so the final determination is likely a year, (or more), away.
They have made considerable progress since last summer, despite what some, (who have not played in a year), may tell you.
It still is not a finished work, and it would probably take, (based on the progress they made during this last year), another year to approach what was promised, (or what anyone would be willing to pay for play).
The initial part of the game, (from levels 1-25 or so, [level cap is 100]), runs fairly well. But even then the help and UI are really user unfriendly. The bright spot is that there are players who are willing to help navigate through those, "How do I...?" questions, and most of those issues are 'solvable'.
It is not a solo friendly game either. The FXP, (leveling exp), is slow and takes a long grind. There are still some guilds that can help, but the player base is probably only around 75-100 (even at peak times). Since it has been free to play it is growing, but will probably only reach DAoC levels, (if that), in the most optomistic scenarios.
In short, the game was virtually unplayable a year age, but has made some progress in that time. It is free to play for the foreseeable future. If it downloads and lets you log-in without issues, (about 20% have real performance-downloading-patching issues), then try it out for a few weeks.
That should be sufficient time to decide for yourself if you want to spend the time and effort to keep playing.
I play it, and I enjoy my time there, but I would not pay to play or spend *all* of my online time there either. Since it is free to play, it's worth, at least, a glimpse in my opinion.
No, I was referring to the "a sucker born every minute" quote.
I'm glad that you at least know some of the backstory, and are not going to lay your money down for this crap. As for trying it out, until Farlan/NPcube are no longer anywhere near the game, it is still A POS, no matter what they do to it gameplay/graphic wise.
Farlan/NPcube showed themselves to be scamartist and thieves. Another company (Snailgames) fixing their inept coding does not change what they are/always will be, nor the fact that they will do it again the first chance to charge money they get.
As far as the game engine, _Pix_ will more than likely win his suit against the idiots of Reunion Island, at which time the game will be shut down, unless Snailgames plans to rebuild the game from scratch (and considering the hatchery/botching of the code by Farlan's clueless lackeys, that would probably be Snailgames best option anyway).
That said, I would not be trying to grind to 100. Or any other level, actually. Not until things settle out and it's clearer whether the game will phoenix or just burn up. I'd only hunt enough to replace gliders, I never did learn how to land safely! But the game looks pretty good from several hundred feet up as you glide over a wide plateau...
Beverji,
Re-reading my post of a week ago, I can see your point. That bit about bias does sound a little absurd to me too. I stand guilty as charged.
I've played a number of MMORPGs. Some I liked more; some I liked less. All of them however, had some aspect or other that I liked or found interesting. DnL is no different.
All-in-all though, I think I gave an accurate and honest assessment of the state of the game as it is currently, and I will stick by it.
yes, despite all its history i tried to download and install this game - just for a look-see
had a couple issues with the download - basically had to start it all over again (really long)
installation never worked and because it is now free to play you get an automated response from tech support stating that there is no tech support
why isn't this thing shut down yet - they have no subscription money coming in and somebody is paying for servers/bandwidth/a few employees (slaves? wouldn't be surprised)
I am not sure how this game it is now, but i remember while i was in the beta testing, oh boy..... it is terrible. the lag, graphic and many other issues turned me down. I can't believe i was fooled back then.....
I think the main reason is the lag and the oversized world..... if they can make the game more populated, maybe... just maybe their seige wars or group battles can make this game more interesting.
Very simple. It was a combination of hype from a company that had no clue what they were actually capable of delivering and a community who hated WoW so much that they were willing to listen to a snake-oil salesman tout their 'miracle cure'.
Same thing happened with Vanguard. A combination of overblown hype and people who were dying to see someone, anyone, show Blizzard that a *real* MMORPG could match WoW's sales number.
At least Turbine has reminded developers with the release of LotRO that producing a solid game is the basic step in avoiding a flop. Let's see how many others will remember that lesson. Hype is easy, a decent product is something else entirely.
A Parable for game designers:
Listen, oh stranger, and heed the words of the Law!
In the beginning was the "Vision", and the "Vision" was without form.
And the God of Games spoke unto Farlan, and sayeth unto him, 'I entrust unto you the "Vision", so that my people shall know my will.' But lo, Farlan was a false prophet and he sought to steal the "Vision", and to make it his own, for he saw the "Vision", and he saw that it was good. But the God of Games discovered his deciet, and he was cast into the Abyss of Lost Games.
Thus did the God of Games call unto St. Aradune to come up to the mountain.
And St. Aradune went up to the mountain top, and there the God of Games spoke unto him and sayeth, 'Long have I watched over my people, and long have I heard their cries. Now shall I let my people know my wisdom, you shall deliver unto them the "Vision" which I have made for them.' And he gave unto Aradune the "Vision". And Aradune looked upon it and he saw it, and he saw that it was good.
And the Lord sayeth unto Aradune 'Go down from the mountain top and seek out the finest craftsman in the land and labor for six years that my people may know the "Vision".'
And Aradune went down as he was told, and sought out Sigil, the Craftsman. And he gave unto Sigil the "Vision", and Sigil saw it, and he saw that it was good.
Then did Aradune and Sigil take the "Vision" to Microsoft, the Patriarch, and laid it before him, and he saw it, and he too saw that it was good.
Going down amongst the people Aradune sayeth unto them, 'Behold I have been given the "Vision" by the God of Games, and Sigil, the Craftsman, and Microsoft, the Patriarch have joined with me to do His work so that you may know the "Vision"'. And the people heard his words and they were pleased.
And there was much rejoicing.
Together Sigil and Aradune labored for many years until Microsoft, the Patriarch called for them and sayeth unto them, "Thou hast labored, and thou hast spent from mine purse for many years, yet the "Vision' hath not been completed!' And Sigil answered unto him and sayeth, 'Thou must provide more money unto us so that we may finish the "Vision"' And when he heard their words, Microsoft was filled with anger, and sayeth unto Sigil and Aradune, "Thou wicked and unfaithful servants, I shall cast thee out of my house, and you shall wander as exiles into the desert where the jackels may feed upon thine entrails!"
Thus were they banished from the house of the Patriarch.
And they were sore afraid.
Then it came to pass, that one night as he slept, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, the Destroyer of Galaxies, came unto Aradune in a dream and he whispered in his ear, and told him, 'Come, I shall aid thee in thy labors to complete the "Vision". I shall show thee ways to change the "Vision" that will be more pleasing to the people.'
And Aradune heard the words of the Destroyer, and he was afraid, and he sayeth unto him 'The God of Games hath said the "Vision" must be of a certain order.' To which the Destroyer responed thus: 'I shall help thee to finish the "Vision", and I shall not interfere.'
Thus was Aradune seduced by the Prince of Lies.
Together Aradune and Sigil labored to finish the "Vision", until one day Sigil brought what he had wrought to Aradune, and he laid it before him and said unto him, 'Alas, I can labor no longer. The bellows are silent and the forge is cold, and still the "Vision" hath not been finished.'
And Aradune gazed upon it, and saw that it was not finished but he shrugged and said unto himself, 'Eh, good enough!'
And Sigil sayeth unto Aradune, 'Let us now bring the "Vision" before the people.'
And lo, they brought the "Vision" before the people and sayeth unto them 'We have made for you the "Vision" which we have promised, so that you may be pleased.'
And the people beheld the "Vision", and saw that it was not finished, and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. And the people took Sigil and Aradune upon their shoulders and they carried them to the edge of the Pit, and they cast them down into the Abyss.
But the God of Games took pity upon them, and lifted them up and said unto them, 'So that thy sins may not be repeated, I will give unto thee the "Law" which thee and thy children, and thy children's children's children must obey lest ye be cast down.'
Heed now the words of the "Law":
I Thou shalt not let thy reach exceed thy grasp.
II Thou shalt not promise what thy cannot produce.
III Thou shalt always produce what hath been promised.
IV Thou shalt never place an unfinished work before the people.
'So let it be written, so let it be done!'
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

He didn't say that
A crappy little newspaper reporter changed around his words so that it said that
And if I seem pissed I am I really like P.T. Barnum he was amazing
Enigma,
Refer back to post #13 of this thread. After re-reading it, it sounded absurd to me too.
Mea culpa. mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
yeah the game is garbage
Everything Happens For A Reason! "Shadowziel"
as is their PR efforts. Every single time they try it (and they are arrogant enough to believe the time before worked too)they get blasted by their own words. They cant hold up to what they claim. Simple.
They complain about how this site and this board allows such "hate" towards this game yet they cant seem to quit sending their bs over here in order to try to drum up players! If they believe this site and board truly does have a bias against them, why then continue to attempt the sugar coated lies and pathetic attempts at forcing people to like this game? They continually try to discredit anyone and everyone when in fact their own posts wither and die. They are shown to be the trolls they call all others who attempt to allow the TRUTH of this "game" stay out there in the public where it will keep the public informed about sleazy devs and companies in the mmorpg industry.
LOL they are pulling their own "DNL" themselves ! LMAO
**reminder for those who have missed this --- a "DNL" is a flat out stupid and ignorant mistake made by a person or persons even when they knew better.
The game really is not much better than it was at the SOG release. There are still the same problems. The game is simply too " mmo gaming 101" entry level to do anyone any good whether or not its free.
The more interesting aspect of this game is the continuing lawsuit on the ownership of the terrain technology. Although its like watching grass grow in the legal system, its still much more interesting than the game will ever be. Not as frustrating either.
The game sux. It should be illegal how much it sux. 3 hours is more than enough time to get to know this game. Its sux period.
Lol again : who said anything had been sold to anybody?
But this is absolutely off-topic: I recommend that you emit these threories on the more appropriate Denying VWorldTerrain Info again thread. (And BTW answer to my request on the NPCube and Farlan sued thread which is quite unfortunately closed now)
Thanks.
No, it's not only a flight sim
