Its just as fun as before, i play on the combine server a iskar monk. Lots of people im currently level 11 and been getting lots of groups for kurns. So if your bored of these other mmos and wanna give EQ a shot again try it graphics are also much better.

id love to play it but theres 2 problems with that
1. theres an eq2 now which costs just the same a month why would i pay for something thats outdated
2. i dont think the creators r worried about it ne more if theres something wrong in the game ur pretty much screwed
so unless they make this game free i dont c why i would spend just as much for this when i can get something better
1. EQ1 has always been way better then EQ2, why EQ2 was ever released was beyond me.
2. There are still GMS and there are many events still going on in EQ and patchs that come into EQ and you can tell they are still working on it.
EQ1 owned and still owns. Everquest will forever own.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
I have a station pass and recently went back to EQ1 and all I can say is that it's a pain in the ass. Not only were all my characters deleted when I got back (except for 1 of them for some reason) but now every time I make a new character they toss me in the same spot no matter what race of class I pick. It's a boring area that drives me to play in EQ2 or Vanguard instead of trying to work my way through it. EQ1 was good, not so much anymore.

Combine server is a hack-fest. 90% + of the population hacks, know people who hack and/or benefit from hacking.
The Combine server is a total joke of zerging and hacking. Everyone has quit the failed progression servers. They had to merge the other one into Combine because no one plays this game. The people that play on the other servers, the few of them, just log in to raid and all hack.

I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.
Why would I go back to play EQ? I do have my rosy memories of the early days but I also remember what it turned into.
I remember in the early days you could go to almost any level appropriate zone, /shout: looking for group, and usually within a few minutes you could hook up with people and have fun. That was when people weren't so stuck up with all the, "My guild is better than your guild" crap. And, "I only group with my own guildmates."
That was also back in the days when the world hadn't been so bloated by all the expansions. The population wasn't so spread out so it was easier to find groups.
That was the real beauty of EQ in it's heyday. Log in, go where you wanted to go, and you could really expect to hook up with a group in a short time and have fun.
Later on there weren't enough low level players to do that in the low-mid level zones. And at high levels most people seemed to be caught up in the guild snobbery and refused to do pick-up groups. Oh sure, some still would, but it was nothing like it used to be.
And I remember the feeling of utter pointlessness the game had for me after I decided I simply couldn't stand raiding. There was no longer any way for me to progress my character's equipment. The game had become all about raiding and if you didn't raid...tough luck. And that whole stupid raid culture was probably the primary reason why guild snobbery became so prevalent.
So yeah, I remember the good ol' days of EQ. Quite fondly, in fact. But I also remember what it was like towards the end of my time in EQ. I remember wandering around aimlessly with my high level characters. Soloing a little here and there. Drifting along while I clung to my memories of the good times. Watching as my equipment fell further and further behind the curve with the never ending introduction of better and better raid drops. The growing resentment as my melee characters became more and more ineffectual in normal content because everything was being adjusted for raid equipment which I didn't have access to.
My spell-casters survived better but still---what was the point? Drift around soloing with no hope of ever getting any upgrades. Sit and farm gold all alone. Bah, not for me.
The EQ I loved was turned into a raiding game and the devs thumbed their noses at people like me. The EQ I loved died a long, long time ago. I couldn't go back even if I tried because it just isn't there anymore.
EQII had potential, however they took elements from EQ that caused people issues or were perceived as issues then modified the mechanics to create EQII and essentially micromanaged it to a point of hinderance. I understand changes were made/have been made since Beta and Live to make it less micromanaged, but it still has areas that are micromanaged.
EQ was a true MMO, its nuances, depth, community, game style and uniqueness can't be duplicated.

EQ is a really good game the thing that holding it back is how out dated the graphics are if it was a FTP game then may be acceptable but as its not i stay with eq2.
I know your all going to say does not mater about the graphics its the game play but to me i want both.
Go back to raiding for 5 hours a night 5 days a week just to update one piece of gear a month? Go back to 5 hour lfg times, if I'm lucky to even get a group? Go back to a game that forces you to have 1 or 2 healers 1 or 2 tanks, and some sort of mana regen at all times? A game where one trash mob can easily kill an entire group if they aren't well equipped?
LMAO. No thanks. EQ is but a sad, sad lump of what it once was.
I'll admit, lfg is the pitz. There is nothing at low levels or not enough anyway. But at high end, groups don't seem to be that hard to find. In or out of my guild. Also I'll point out that I'm not a social deva, so grouping for me is always painful. But I suspect this is still going to be a case by case issue...
Raiding. I raid with my guild. We raid, 3 nights a week. Raid is appx 3 hours long. Currently on slow nights, off nights or low player participation nights we raid Anguish. We clear Anguish in 1 hour - raid over.
On longer raid nights we hit progression mobs. Vish, Vule, Sendaii (tells you where we are). These raids can take up to 2 hours. But thats multiple targets, not just a single target.
Loot. Well, we group enough, have enough crafters in the guild, that player made gear and quested gear is easily obtainable. Also it's as good as if not better than much of the gear we get as raid loot.
EQ is old and dated, certainly. But it's also the only MMO out there, that doesn't pander to "casual" game play - where you actually have to put some effort into what you do. I like that.
What was that game, where you created your character and the game played it for you?

I can't imagine what on earth would drive someone to play Vanguard.

Thank you BuzWeaver, for pointing this out to me
Ah! You don't like starting in the new Tutorial area, Glooming Deep Mines or is it Crescent Reach you don't like? Then all you have to do, is on your character select screen, before you enter the game, toggle off the "Enter Tutorial" button. You'll get popped into your racial starting area.----------------------------------------

im thinking about comming back to EQ, what is a good server to play on?
so i guess no one plays EQ any more???
EQ was fun but I just couldnt get ahead in that game. I never had anything close to uber and I played minimum of 4hrs a night for 2 years. Joined everyguild that would let me in hoping to get some nice gear saving my dkp only to have some guys alt spend his mains points on something he would never use. Having the leader of my guild refuse to acknowledge my bids if I outbid him for a drop and take it anyway with the promise of "you'll get the next one". People whining that we dont raid the city of mist enough for stupid Jade Reavers because it was used in more than one classes epic so we raid CoM instead of Tower of Veeshan. Clerics spending 3 days in a guilds trial period before getting to join while I as a warrior spend 2 months helping out raiding and grouping and get told we just dont need any warriors at this time. Having to roll on equipment drops with a guildie with better gear than me only to lose the roll time and again and have that guildie go and sell the item in the bazaar. I made friends and hated having to quit but looking back I was retarded. I spent most of my time frustrated and on the losing side of things whether it be a raid wipe or a lost roll.
Everything I just said happened to me on multiple occasions. I will never play EQ or any other fantasy MMO again. I toy around with the idea from time to time but the memory of EQ leaves a bad taste in my mouth and every swords and shields game out there produces the same effect.
I started a month ago but then generally forgot to logon the rest. Think I'm probably going to reactivate when I'm bored or when they start this new server.(they were looking for ideas of a new alt. ruleset server recently- quite possibly another classic/progression server on way)
You would really like WoW. Warriors are junk in EQ1, the worst character class to play. WoW would shock you, a Warrior is gear dependant but can actually solo well and PvP very well! Give WoW a try, I played a Warrior in EQ1 and felt exactly like you until I switched to WoW. I hate SOE's stupid management who have left Warrior as the turd class and are to dumb to fix the class, the most played class btw! WoW has Furor working for them, Warriors are the way EQ1 should have their warriors.
If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)

There have been times where I look at the boxes for WoW and Guild Wars when Im in target or wal mart and think "I know this will be fun". Then I remember EQ and put the box back down. I am going to level at least one character in CoX to 50 and see what the end game is like there before I buy either one of those. If that doesnt turn out to be fun I might buy WoW or Guild Wars but like I said EQ ruined the genre for me so if I see EVE or another Sci Fi MMO my money will probably go there instead.
Maybe you could ask the other members of your guild, Old Timer's are playing Vanguard aren't they?
SOE sells EQ1 and someone goes back to pre-Luclin play, drop all monthly fees, or say maybe $5 and then we come back!
