So is the game headed in the right direction?

I've heard that the game started out bad at launch(wasn't finished, etc).  Now that Sony has the game, is it headed in the right direction?  I'm trying to figure out whether I should get EQ2 or this.  If this game has a promising future, I'd like to give it a shot.

Umm, you started a new thread for this?  You didn't bother checking the other 865,903,326,885,200,834 threads discussing this exact thing?

I'd suggest EQ2 for now, give vanguard a try in like 6 months if they still have a player base. It's gonna take awhile for them to fix it, and to then convince people to come back.

Especially since they are trying to snag the vanguard players that quit and get them to play EQ2.

Sorry, I just came on here quickly to ask the question :P  It's 4:30am, and I'm heading to bed shortly.  I was hoping I could get some feedback to read when I come back here.

If you want to have fun, buy EQ2. However Vanguard is a much better investment. You can pick it up at bargain basement price now. But in 20 years it will be a valued collector's item. Contending for the title of Worst Game of all time, just after E.T. for the Atari 2600.

I think maybe with the delay with AoC players woh started playing VG to pass the time might stick around longer, and if SOE keep on liek they have then yes this game is going in the right direction.. it just needs more players

I agree with the other poster who said to go with EQ2 for now. VG will probably be quite good given enough time. For now though, its not nearly up to par with EQ2 which has been improved to the point of being a top notch MMO, just as VG will be if they don't abandon it.

They are both Station pass games though, so why not get EQ2 EoF, then pick up VG later for $10 or whatever it is now? Personally, thats the route I'm going, I'm not in VG anymore until its worth it, but EQ2 is a great game, and with EoF version, you get alll the expansions to!

Right now, SOE is trying to direct Vanguard players to play EQ2 instead. Seriously. That is literally what they are doing -- giving free EQ2 time to Vanguard players.

That should tell you all you need to know.

Let's see.. reducing the number of servers and trying to get what players are left to move to EQ2.  Sounds like SOE is trying to put Vanguard out of its misery.. which would seem to be the right direction.

There is a post here recently with a quote by a dev, i think it was, who addressed that very question. I believe he denied that is what SoE are trying to do, can't remember what his actual answer was.

I suppose its better to have players move over to your other game while you fix the current one, as opposed to having them un-sub altogether from the Station Pass.

EDIT: "Sony is committed to Vanguard, it’s not going away anytime soon. SoE is not trying to lure players from VG to EQ2."

My biggest problem with VG currently is, I dont SEE it going into any direction whatsoever.

Its bug fixing and performance improvement, which is nice, but its a necessity, not a creative direction. I just cant see it. Will it be more harcore, more carsual, more story telling or more battle oriented? I just lack any "grand vision" what kind of game they want it to be now.

The game was rapidly improving before SOE took over.  Since they took over 3 months progress has greatly slowed.

Since SOE took over the postibves and negatives IMO are:

    On the positive side:

    1.  SOE has not engaged in outright lies to the playerbase like they have in other games.

    2.  Thier approach to fixing perfomance first is admireable.

    3.  Many people report perfomance increases while many people say perfomance has gotten much worse.

    4.  They seem to be more concerned with testing their patches and new features before releasing them than Sigil.  This thoughtful go slow approach is IMO a much better long term philosphy.

     5.  The lower level game play is much improved since launch.  There are many more quests and there is an amazing amount of content and quests in the game now although the qaulity and lack of complexity involved in most quests is severely lacking.  One cannot come close to doing all the quests in the game without them going grey.

    Negative

    1.  The staff has been cut in half and it really shows.  One has to wonder if they have not made further cuts in staff.

    2.  Performance has gotten much worse for many people while any people report perfomance increases.

    3.  Almost no new content has been added.  Compare that to Sigil which had been putting out an amazing amount of content since beta 3 last August with often patching in new content 2-3 times a week.  It was well known that devs under SIgil were routinely working 80+ hrs week ands often sleeping in the office.  This has pbviously stopped so not only is the staff much smaller but they likely work a lot less hours.

    4.  The dumbing down of the game has started,  rest experience will be in next patch, crafting exp curve will be 35% easier before rest expereince, the games adventure leveling speed which is now just a tad slower than WoW's will speed up greatly with rest expereince.

    5.  Gold seller spam has increased by ten fold.

    6.  Soe appears to have no knowledge about the game or what effect their changes are making,

    7.  SOE appears to care very little about thios game but rather seems more concerned with driving away VG's player base in hopes they play EQ2.

    8.  In almost every decision SOE has made about Vanguard they have taken the simple easy way out.  From sever merges in not addressing housing plot problems or differences ion server economies, to simplifying crafting decons, to lowering the crafting curve, to eliminating EE and putting in level limits.  SOE said people do not understand EE and its confusing for them.  I think that simply means EE is just to confusing for SOE.  EE is a great little feature and it allows a lot of flexibilty in choosing your gear.  Simply taking the time to write a nice EE tutorial quest would be not be hard for SOE but rather than take the time to do that they are scapping it in favor of a much simpler less unique and fun system.  Taking the easy way out like this does not bode well for the games future.

Before you know it they will scrap vulnerabilities, rescues, counterspells and other unique features of the game because its to complicated for them.  Where will it end?

Overall I am concerned that SOE has simply given up on the game and that their lack of understanding of Vanguard and MMO's in general will cause them to reach for even more quick simplificartion fixes.

"So is this game headed in the right direction?"

If that direction is down then you definitely can say that's where it's headed.

I love it when people post stuff like this and think they are funny even though the poster just before them wrote the same thing just using different words.

I say start with Vanguard. If you do some research you can find it cheap. Then if you find that you hate it (and most do), cancel your account and look for one of those try EQ2 for 60 days free postcards to show up in your mailbox.....cross your fingers though, that promotion may be over.

Or.......buy both, they are both found under retail now (saw the collectors eq2 for 19.99); youll get a month free with both, then if you like one, subscribe, and dump the other. If you happen to like both, get the station pass and play em both.

My suggestion? Start with EQ2, because it's got a larger population, established lore, and a new expansion on the way.

As for Vanguard, give SOE a few months before investing in it.  Don't just buy this game blindly. Let SOE work on further optimizing and fixing the client. Let them merge the servers and let the population stabilize. And above all, wait until the free trial is released so you can try the game for several days without paying for it to see if it's something you'll enjoy.

Thanks for all of the input.  I'll go ahead and play EQ2 and just keep an eye on Vanguard.

    Thanks all.

It is sad this game lost so many of its player base due to performance issues, etc.  The only reason this game appeals to me is the combat.  It is one of the best in MMOs today as far as PvE.  I am not into PvP so I cannot comment, but Sigil did do a good job with how they implemented thier combat.  In EQ2 you basically know if you can win or lose before you engage the fight.  You are seldom in a situation where you get adds in EQ2 like you did in the age of EQ and Vanguard still has this sense of play.  I am one of the players that actually want more penalties for death, because I can't stand doing something that provides no risk.  I hope SoE can revive this game, but with the population as low as it is currently they will have to do a lot.
