this will be long, but worth while for those who like to know WHY the world of azeroth is as it is now. I will take you back to the begining.
10000 years before the first coming of the burning legion, the world of azeroth was actually one continent, at that center of the continent laid a lake which is called the well of eternity.
the well was the world's magic and natural powers, it got the power from the infinite great dark beyond. it sent its potent energies ALL around the world making life and giving magic.
The first great race were called the kaldorei, they named the great continent KALIMDOR. and they lived neared the well of eternaty. they soon began to gain power and wisdom from the well and they supassed all other races on the continent. THO living with this great power, it gave them immotallity as well as manipulation of that power. LATER to be CALLED THE STUDY OF THE ARCANE MAGIC.
some of the kaldorei thought abusing the power given will lead to bad news but their warnings failed for their brethrens studied the arcane piously. ONE of their greatest sorcerer was named Azhara. she seemed to understand the magic as if it SHE was the magic. LATER on she was crowned queen of kalimdor, and she took her highborne(higher class kaldoreis) to make them worship her, making her a GODDESS.
After eons of abuse of the well, the terrihble demons of the burning legion whom resided in the twisting nethers. they sensed the strong powers of the well and they FEED on that magic, therefore they were DRAWN to the world of azeroth.
Not to be denied of this great power, Sargeras the dark titan and lord of the burning legion exerted an unholy influence on the highborne. there the subtle manipulations of sargeras started.

his lieutenants Archimonde and Mannoroth prepared the attack of the well. the queen and the highbornes could not resist sargeras's great power, they fell victim to him. at which the highbornes opened a portal within the well of eternity, and out comes the assaults of the burning legion
after the release of the burning legion the cities of the kaldoreis were destroyed, nature was being destroyed as well. and the once proud race was pushed back by the unstoppable assualts of the burning legions. THEN came a YOUNG KALDOREI SCHOLAR. his name was Malfurion Stormrage. HE had sensed the corruption among the upper class with the use of arcane magic which his brother Illidan practiced, but stormrage convinced his brother to forsake his obsession of magic and help him fight the burning legion. Also the young priestess tyrande whisperwind joined the fight.
they joined with the demi god cenarius who brought the mighty aid of the dragon flights. all led by a great leviathan Alextrasza. they agreed to fight the burning legion as Malfurion looked for a way to banish the demons. He was convinced that the Well of eternity was the umbilical link to the physical world for the burning legion, and he insisted that it should be destroyed. everyone was shocked by this notion and no one listened but tyrande saw the wisdom in his words and convinced cenarius and the dragon flights to attack the temple of Azshara.
Illidan tho was unnerved by the thought of never wielding magic again, and also resented that tyrande had chosen Malfurion over himself. this fear and jealousy led illidan to vow to protect the well of eternity. when Malfurion, tyrande, cenarius and the dragon flights attacked the temple, the highbornes were in the middle of summoning sargeras, but the surpise was that illidan had told the evil queen of his brother's plan and the highbornes were well prepared. during the fight, tyrande falls in battle, which sent Malfurion into a murderous rage, the battle between Malfurion and Azshara threw the summoning spell into choas which caused the well of eternity to collapse upon itself. with the link cut off the burning legion were all sent back to the twisting nethers.

at the collapse of the well, the continent was broken apart by the raging sea which came rushing in to fill to void of the well, now where the well stood there is a tumultuous storm of tidal fury and chaotic energies which will be called the Maelstrom.
a few kaldoreis lived including Malfurion, Tyrande, and Cenarius. they sailed to the holy mountain of Hyjal. Azshara and here acolytes ended up in the bottom of the sea, they will be known later as the NAGA. but other highbornes also survived, and Malfurion mistrusted them, but he let that go thinking that they could do no more harm without the Well. the kaldoreis climbed Hyjal and found a small lake, but to their horror the lake's water were FOULED by magic. what had happened was Illidan had escaped and filled 7 vials with the Well's magic waters. and he poured one of them into the lake, it was so potent that this lake became the NEW well of eternity. Malfurion was outraged that his brother learned nothing of the chaotic use of the well's powers.
so Cenarius and Malfurion sealed illidan in a vast underground chamber, fearing the repeat of the burning legion, the Kaldoreis who are called NIGHT ELVES now seeked help to seal the lake up. with the help of the three great dragons Alextrasza, Ysera, and Nozdormu they created Nordrassil aka the WORLD TREE. the tree sustained by the well's power but instead of arcane magic it leaked divine magic, it made the well invisible to the burning legions senses.
after years of peace with the divine magic,and living with nature. the highbornes were still convinced that the well should be used as arcane, they attacked the druides with terrible magic storms which failed in the end. unable to kill so many of their kin, the druides banished the highbornes off of Kalmdor. after the highbornes left the lands on their shipes the druides created a powerful spell that closed their borders with an eternal mist where they are untouched by time or the surrounding world.

the highbornes sailed the seas and landed on the continent which would be called Lordaeron . there they built their own magical city named Quel'Thalas and forever after leaving their night elves brothers they will be called "HIGH ELVES" as for a source of power, they had a vial which illidan had stolen and they made a well, which was named the SUNWELL. the sunwell lacked the mighty powers of the well of eternity, it did not give them immortality.
they feared that the burning legion would sense the new sunwell so they built huge MONOLITHIC runestones around Quel'Thalas that marked the boundaries of the magic barrier surrounding the SUNWELL. a group of 7 of the greatest high elf lords vowed to watch over and protect their new homeland, they were called the CONVOCATION OF THE SILVERMOON.
as their empire grew, battles were fought against the savage forest trolls, and they also learned that they shared this new land with a race of humans. but they left the humans alone for now.
the humans lived nomadically until the rise of ARATHI, a tribe which brought other human tribes together and established the nation of ARATHOR with the massive fortified city of STROM as its capital. the high elves heard this news and sent for the help of the humans against the cunning trolls, the humans agreed to this allaince as long as they are taught the use of arcane magic. the two races PWNED the trolls so badly that the trolls never came back to power in the land of Lordaeron.
the growth of humans also got them in contact with the dwarves who have long lived in undergound cities, and eventually the human empire expanded so much of lordaeron that the capital city(only city) was split into different kingdoms.
the high elves found that humans displayed an astounding natural affinity for magic, indeed many human wizards outstipped their high elf teachers but the human mages were greedy and careless. ALWAYS wanting more power, more magic. This abuse of magic again attracted the burning legion. BUM BUM BUUUUUM!
when the first demons came back, they were weak and small, but nontheless. people panic. so a Council of silvermoon entered a secret pact with the Magocrat lords of Arathor. and created a order called the GUARDIANS OF TIRISFAL. the name is for the glade where the first meeting was held. THE formost guardian was a human woman named AEGWYNN. she had learned that a large number of demons had settled on the nothern continent of NORTHREND. the demons were hunting the magical dragons to drain them of their great powers, with the help of the dragons she defeated the demons.
When the last demon fell, sargeras apeared to her and said that the burning legion WILL RETURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
enraged and overconfident Aegwynn destroyed sargeras's physical form with ease. Alas when she unleashed her power, sargeras infected her with a portion of his own spirit, this taint passed on to her child MEDIVH . medivh lived the normal life except medivh became renown for his magical prowess, his life was normal until he hit 14 years of age. when his arcane power clashed with the dormant spirit of sargeras. medivh fell into a coma for many years, when he woke up so did the soul of sargeras. The demon began to pervert medivh's mind and soul to his own foul ends.
