Everquest was still kicking strong, WoW wasnt released yet, no one knew it would become the monster it is today not even blizzard, every one thought EQ would still reign supreme, it survived strong against its other contenders, DOAC, Ashrons call, AO etc. Still keeping what 250 - 500k playerbase? So why didnt SOE take that money and attention to making EQ a muuuch better game then releasing a crappy sequel? They could of redid EQs graphics engine a ton full, added housing etc. Was there a need for EQ2?

So they could capture additional revenue without disturbing an established revenue stream.
Do you really want them to do a NGE job on EQ? I meant they don''t really have a great record when it comes to that sort of thing.
After EQ PoP could they do anything worse to EQ? Its like can they really do anything worse with SWG NGE?
The question is more why wouldnt they do it? Reason people where becoming bored with EQ1. Whole guilds where made of just 6 people boxing 6 accounts to down every boss with no need of interacting.

I never played EQ so the PoP reference is kinda lost on me. I assume it was an expansion that didn't go over very well.Regardless, I feel confident that if we could get an honest answer out of whom ever made the desicion it would be the econnomical equivlant of....
"We didn't want to risk killing the golden goose so we tried to make another one instead."
Weather they were successfull or not could be debated but I think most business would have come to the same conclusion.
EQ2 was made for a number of reason. The two that top my list are
1). Graphic engines in new games were taking over and EQ1 was so old school. I think that they were thinking of a way to implement the new technology without having to redo the whole game over. It is VERY hard and time consuming to replace a graphical engine in any program.
2). They were trying to create a larger territory. They knew that WoW would compete with them since Blizzard has had enormous amounts of success with their games. For Sony to release EQ2 while EQ1 was still out they thought they could create one large dominant company, but in the end it didn't work out. I think they thought that adding another expansion wouldn't be able to keep up with WoW so they just created a whole new game with some lore from EQ1. SOE dominated all over MMO's by far at that time, but like wise investors do they thought ahead of the present and into the future. They thought so far ahead they let EQ1 go down and EQ2 to have a horrible 3 month release.
Oh and...Everquest 1 wasn't made up of 6 people 6 boxing. That was DAoC.6 People couldn't box the half the encounters in EQ1 anyway. The raids in Everquest 1 were way harder than anything any game has experienced today.
I found everquest really boring actually, I dont know what people see in it. Maybe I waited to long before I played it.
I'm not familiar with EverQuest (1), but I'm sure the [outdated] graphics were the reason - even if the gameplay is/was superior to other games. I would like to add that they may have gone a bit too far with the graphics in EQ2; for a MMO the requirements are quite harsh.
I disagree strongly with the original poster's opinion that EQ2 is "crappy". At launch, EQ2 was a poor game and needed alot of work. Today, EQ2 is one of the best on-line role playing games out there.
The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is streamlined, the character options are many. After two years, I logged into EQ2 a few weeks ago and was just blown away by the game quality. Excellent job by Sony.
By the way, I have tried WOW, EQ1, EQ2, Lineage 2 and Eve. All of these games are quite good in my opinion. I think EQ2 deserves the place it holds right now and is the best game available. Thanks.
