OK, I'll make this short and sweet.  I have played for about 15 hours now.  I completely loved the newbie area.  Now that I am in my first big city, things seem different.

What I like:  The piloting!, the fast pace combat, the availability of missions, the vehicles, the vastness, the uniqueness

What I dislike:  The choppiness in and out of town, the combat, the lack of good insructions if you downloaded the game.

Basically, I was really enjoying SWG until I left the newbie area.  I started doing a few missions outside of town, killing rodents and such.  Is the choppiness of these mobs just something you have to get used to?  I seem to have adapted well, but I want to make sure it's not my computer.   Even when i'm in my speedrunner, the game seems to be slightly choppy.  It reminds me of DAoC PVP.  Im guessing its just something that you had to get used to.

If it I hadnt had so much fun completing the newbie area pilot missions, I'm not sure if I would still be playing.  Right now, I'm still in the trial, and I feel like this game should be about $5.95 a month or even free.  I'm afraid if I don't get some help or guidance, I will not buy the game and continue my SWG adventures.  I need convincing that this game is worth overlooking the blemishes.

What's the specs of your PC, specifically your RAM and graphics card?  How high do you have your settings in game?

If you have shadows on, turn them off.  They seem to contribute most to the chop.  Ages ago, before the dark times, I used to run everything maxed with control panel enabled 4xAA and 8xAF pretty smoothly with shadows off.

Try the tips the other poster said like turning down shadows and such.

Compared to pre-cu SWG performance has improved allot where most of us including myself in our guild had high end machine's at the time we never could max out our settings as the game was for its time very system demanding, compared to today's hard/software the game runs very well and looks allot better then it did back then (DOH ), but with mid-range system some might occasionaly get hickups or lag if settings are to high or to much options turned on.

If you're on Tatooine, it's a problem for me as well. I just avoid that planet as much as possible.

Then again, I need a new computer. lol

    Thanks for all the tips.

My computer is a 3.0ghz pentium with 2GB ram and a "Dell version" of a 6800GT (this card has always sucked for me).  I know its not the shadows because I usually turn them off on all games because I know they dont work well with my video card.  Other than that, I have tried maxing everything out, and I have tried turning things down to about half way.  I didnt really see a difference.

What I'm mainly talking about is, for example, how the womprats jump at you when you start firing at them.  It looks like they are just bouncing extremely fast.  Its just weird, or maybe its just me.

Anyway, thanks for the responses.  I'll be playing all day, because even with my distaste for the graphics, the game is drawing me back in.  So if anyone plays on starsider server and has any tips for me, send a tell to Hendrix.

No they haven't, it's a result of the NGE.

Creatures will naturally speed up to catch up to you if they need to get in range.  In the case of some creatures it can look a little weird.   I guess it depends how important these things are to you.

No, they arent really important, I just dont see why they are part of a game that's monthly price is premium.  Anyway, im still enjoying it.  Im going to try to work on getting a faster ship now

Many of the critter mob probelms date back to the CU, when they broke the speeds of all the mobs as part of the conversion of mobs from unique entites to "angry bags" with levels.

The critter mobs once had very specific interactions with the world, but when they rushed the CU into production they tossed the very artfully constructed mobs out the window.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I'll ask this here, so I wont create another thread.  Does anyone know why I cannot use the official SWG forums?  Is it because I am only playing the trial account?  I wonder why, because I have had and SOE account for quite sometime.

    thanks

When I was on my vet trial last spring, I couldn't access the SWG forum either.  I don't think they want disgruntled vets dissing their "iimproved" NGE on their own boards.

Not even close, this game always had animation issues.
