I have tried many free trials in the past month or so... trying to find a game that I would enjoy... but I found the same re-occuring problem.
Unlike WoW, the games that I tried (COX, EQ, EQ2, EVE, GW), had no new servers. None, zip, no new servers to get a fresh start. I found myself surrounded by high level toons.
If other mmos want to compete, they really need to come out with new servers, where everyone starts out at the base level 1.
I think this is why WoW has so many people still subscribing. If I choose to reroll, fresh start. I just wait for the patch and Blizzard usually creates one to two new servers where everyone starts out from level 1.
This is my opinion... but I wanted to toss it out there. I would love to play Eve, or COX, or EQ 2. If i had a chance to roll with other people on a brand new server. Where noone dominates it?

Just another new innovation from blizzard.
Um ok. I am not as current as I used to be but last time I was reading the forum on how there have not been any new servers since they released TBC. When they did release those servers they did too many at once and now the A:H is way off and all the locus are begging for new severs.
I agree it is newbie friendly though. I have rerolled tons of times.
Dont forget blizzard's money machine taking some of your cash for a character transfer from any server To all new servers
Level 1 - priceless
Level 70 transfer - $10 and 30mins of waiting
? oh well

Not sure, but I think that's only true for the US region these days. Europe hasn't opened new realms in a while. Then again, I rolled on one of the 6 months old realms (a recommended one) the other week with a friend, and there were newcomers (plus some fast levelling veterans' alts of course) everywhere. New realms doesn't mean you'll have new players, and the lack of new realms doesn't mean you won't get new players.
Seriously, I would have never played wow if I couldn't get a fresh start. Thats y i was so let down by other mmos that i tried... yah there are some peeps that are at my level but with a new server... everyone is at the same level. No worries about having to catch up with people that had been playing for like 2 -3-4 years. Everyone had a clean slate. I hope EVE devs look I really enjoyed there game I wish they would make a new server.
When I started playing i picked a new server to play on. Someone with money to toss around might want to look into this discovery of yours.

Give a new player today 6-9 months and they will fly a ROKH (Battleship) as well as any 4 year veteran.... in a particular role of course.... what the veteran will be able to do is play more than one role.. (EWAR, DPS, ECM etc).... but hey, you can only fit one role per time out...so doesn't really matter.

I think the OP makes a great point.
I was actually thinking of this very issue recently but regarding Everquest 1. I would love to restart on a new progression server that had different rules and modifications from the the other two progression servers (combine and sleeper).
Specifically, new servers, I think, work very well under the model of beginning with the classic game and then after some period of time release the other expansions.
Thanx for the back-up. Yah man its so obvious. I took a break from WoW. But couldn't figure out why I wasn't enjoying my experience with other mmos. Then I remembered how I began WoW. I started on smolderthorn 8 months or so after wow came out. So many high levels, was to much ... then a new server got open and I have been there ever since made alot of in game friends who i level with. I would have quit WoW if i didn't have the option of rolling on a brand new server. and would not have had as much fun with the game as I did.
.
WoW has so many subscribers because of 2 big reasons. One, the box said Blizzard on it, and 2 the box says Warcraft on it. Two very successful and well known names :P
Joking aside, the game is very newbie friendly. The game is very easy to get into. The gameplay is easy to understand.
People also judge WoWs graphics. They don't look too impressive to some, and they probably did that on purpose. Out of these 9 millions subscribers, how many of those do you think are actual hardcore gamers with gaming rigs? WoW is also system friendly.
Looking for something new.

I couldn't think of any game more stagnant. Any game that needs one more.
YOu obviously never played COX because if you did you would know that people constantly reroll exp on the most populated server Freedom.. It rivials AO as the only MMORPG that I have ever played where you always had new people running around.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

Did you even read my post. I said i want A NEW SERVER!!!! Read then respond thats how it works.
They want my 14.99 then they should make a new server.
EvE only has one server anyway, and with the amount of time you COULD put into the game with out even getting all of the skills maxed out starting lots of new servers would be a bad idea, GW, well for GW theres just no point in making new servers really, not that they really even have servers in that sense in the first place.
Anyway, WoWs new servers are also a bad thing, tons of new servers=dead older servers, plenty of people quit because everyone leaves there server and moves to another one, at the same time nearly as many people just relevel to 60 (or 70 now) again, and again, and again, meh. though that cycle has been repeating itself for quite some time now WoW is likely to die off soon (soon being before 2009) for lack of new concepts and dated GFX&Engine. or then again, maybe not.
PS. i no longer play WoW, and when i started i had only played RuneScape before (as far as MMOs go), lastly, i just watched the intro and desided to buy it, the end.

I want a pony. The farmer wants my 1000 bucks then he should get those cute horseys to make me a pony.
EVE recently revamped their graphics what a perfect time to start a new server. I don't care that it has one server with 25000 people on it.... oh wait now i remember playing it on the free trial.... lag but every game has lag. Eve is a great game i loved it... but I would like to have a fresh start with it. Because I enjoyed it..
Projecting wow to die in 2009 is hilarious, every game dies eventually. I never projected a date for any of the games that i listed I thought all of them were great games but I wish they would make new servers. I didn't bash your game, in fact I enjoyed all the games I tried. I just simply would like a server with a fresh start on any of those games i listed.
Any game is going to have dead servers? So its not just WoW.
STAY ON SUBJECT .
QUOTE"I want a pony. The farmer wants my 1000 bucks then he should get those cute horseys to make me a pony."QUOTE
Wrong context. Its more like I want a horse. The farmer wants my 1000 bucks then he should get me a nice new shiny horse not the U-shaped horse that he is attempting to sell me. Although having my feet touch the ground keeps me quite secure while riding around on it.
As for the rest of other mmorpgs, they are successful, they have re-couped their investment money, they are turning in a true profit. They do not need to open new servers. They are doing just fine with having new players join their older servers. For them the benifits of having new players join older servers, outweigh trying to make new servers for the sole reason of being for new players.
And as I already posted above, no mmorpg in history, including WoW, has ever opened new servers before new players joined. They only open new servers after soo many new players join older servers that the wait times to get into the game increases too much.
But you did try to make a good point. Whatever reason you choose to try WoW, the fact you found a mmorpg you enjoy is what really counts.
Blizzard hasn't opened any new servers since TBC launched, and they're probably not going to be opening any more as several of the new servers are severely underpopulated. Some people have an irrational obsession with rolling on a new server, but it's really a pretty small number of people. The biggest one, 'lots of people to run instances/quests with since everyone's my level' pretty much goes away after a month or two - especially since the new servers end up being the least populated.
I think you misunderstand how MMO's work. The only reason WoW introduced new servers was because the servers they had were overcrowded. Wait times were too high so they offered new ones and offered free transfers. Now in WoW there are some servers that are dead (well not literally but compared to WoW standards, there aren't many people). The only way a game is going to make a new server is if one or more server(s) is/are too crowded. They don't make new servers just to make them. They have to have a reason to justify it. In WoW's case new servers = less wait time = happy customer base cause they aren't sitting around waiting to get in game. Currently the games you mentioned don't have these problems. WoW hasn't rolled out a new server in a long time so their population problems seems to be settling down. Only way one of the games you mentioned would activate a new server is if the customer base increased. They aren't going to make a new server just so people can level with each other. Eventually there would be too many servers, too much staff to keep up with maintenaince, eventually, like every MMO, the population will thin, servers will need to be shut down because money is not coming in like it used too.
The reason WoW has so many subscribers is both because of their aggressive ( almost ridiculously I might add ) marketing campaign and also the fact that it was at a time when there was a big space in the industry and things were getting stagnant, Star Wars Galaxies had gotten the infamous nerfs and people were getting bored of Everquest 1, not only that, but warcraft is an already successful gaming franchise. I reckon that if World of Warcraft had enough competitors back when it was first released then it would have about half the amount of subscribers it had now, in my opinion they just got very very lucky, call it speculation, call me a hater, whatever, I'm looking at the history here and not just at the records and articles, though then again, Blizzard are usually very tight lipped about what goes on in their company anyway.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
WoW has more subscribers because Blizzard made a vastly superior game. Deal with it.
I think more bitter devs post here than regular gamers.

No I'm serious, I live in EU so we do not have many video games ads on TVs but for MTV. Did Blizzard bought many tv ads or what would you define it to be ridicolous?
2) EQ2 was released a few days before WoW. If there was such an empty gap as you claim, would not you think that EQ2 would have filled it? It was and is a decent game, I bought it and played it before WoW came out, as in EU WoW came out in February.
But it did not happen. Why you think it is that?
Oh! Also note: WoW is the only MMorpg I know of to have such a long Open-ish beta with NO NDA. for 6 months the NDA was lifted and everyone could check the beta forums out, screenies, movies, everyone that cared knew what kind of game WoW was beforehand.
I think that was a big factor. Most companies keep the NDA on until the very last 2-4 weeks. THe official version is to prevent technology and idea stealing from the competition and surely that plays a part. More importantly, though, I think because most companies philosophy is to polish last, make the game first. So until 1 month before, the game is actually not working very well and lifting the NDA would be a huge hit for them.
