Returning to DAoC

(posted on Allakhazam as well, but figured I could get more exposure by posting here too)

Hey everyone, my wife and I are returning to DAoC, though we are both still technically new to the game, our last foray being during the ToA release, and only managing to get to level 16. I just wanted to ask a few questions to get a feel for the 'new' DAoC.

First I see a lot of mentioning of 'buff-bots' what are those exactly? Also am I to understand that ToA content is basically raid content? If that's the case then the Classic realms may be more our speed, having been burned out on raiding in WoW, and the likelihood of finding raids with the low pop seems nil as well.

I understand that the Classic servers remove the ToA Master abilities and Artifacts (which I am thinking from the descriptions I've seen are raid-centric items)and the ToA zones (which are only useful if you want to get the ToA stuff), but do they still retain all the Catacombs stuff? What about Champion levels and mounts? If you don't have Master level abilities can you still get Champion levels?

Are there any spec/classes that are discriminated against? Are there classes that are always welcomed into a group no matter what? I ask because it seems every game I play this is the case. Wanted to see if it was true here as well.

Is questing a viable way to level up now? Or is it still a pull mob/kill/pull/kill grind like it used to be? If both are equally viable then which nets xp the quickest? I've seen reports of people getting to high levels in a matter of days now, so want to find out if this rumor is true, and get an idea of how to accomplish that, at least to some minor extent.

How is the economy? Are things set at ridiculous prices because of the low pop? Or are they reasonable? Is money easy or hard to get? Is farming required to get things you want?

Okay that's it I swear lol. Sorry for all the questions and the long post, but I hope someone can answer these questions so I know what to expect as we get further into the game. Thanks in advance for any input and info that people can share.

OK a Buff bot is a second account character that follows your main character around just for buffs and heals. On the classic servers characters have to be in the same group to buff another and thier is a range limit on how far you can get away from each other before the effect from the buff drops. This was done to cut down on a buff bot standing safe in a keep or castle and buffing another character who then goes and does RVR with the buffbot safely tucked away.

Yes you can still get Champ levels up too champ level 10. Each with added abilities and some new items you can equip or buy. recently all characters get a basic horse at level 10 for free but yes each Champ level opens up new and exotic looking mounts.

Ok classes that are welcome in every group, this is a complex subject. Basically in DAOC Healers, Crowd Control, and Tanks are always welcome it seems. But truthfully thier are such a huge amount of classes each totally different and unique that its better to just play what you like.

Yes questing is still a viable way to level and earn very nice xp. Thier new line of dragon quests were very enjoyable and had great rewards in money and xp. Since they have raised the xp bonus in older realm zones and a huge bonus to xp in rvr and battleground zones alot of players level in different places now. Unlike how it was a few years ago with Catacombs expansion first came out where the fastest way was to grind very repetitive instances. But any way ya choose it, it is very possible to level to 50 in just a few days. I highly stress taking your time to level and enjoy the different battlegrounds along the way if thats your thing, or the pve areas that everyone else just rushes buy.

DAOC unlike many games out there has a crafters economy. The majority of the best items you can have will be player crafted. Prices did seem a little high sometimes but truth is I never had problems making enough money along the way to support my character. Look into the different crafting options only if its to get high enough to 'salvage' items you find to sell thier base materials.

I havent played DAOC in about 6 months but can honestly say its the best game Ive ever played, and Ive been around since MUDS and 300 baud modems lol. Its a shame thier population has dropped so low.

ToA is no longer raid content.  Everything can be done by a group or less, except for 1 part of ML 10.  Things that were battlegroup credit (raid size) are still allowed to be done that way and raids happen frequently you can tag along on.

There are no classes to stay away from per se, I would not play a stealth class unless you want to solo.  They really bring nothing to a group.  They do way too much damage so they tend to take agro and then need to be healed a lot so they basically are weak light tanks for PvE.  In RvR, archers can get groups but assassins are either solo or grouped only with other stealthers.

Healers are always wanted.  There are 45 classes and all of them are viable.  People need tanks, casters, healers, and hybrids.  Even stealthers have their roll, just not one for PvE and do better in a group of the same kind.

Questing can be the best way to XP.  If you go to the catacombs zones and do those quests they will level you at almost the same rate as a perfect camp for your level, but you can do this without the grinding of killing monsters constantly.  There are also storyline quests being added every couple of weeks for an ongoing story campagin the game has started.  The new story will start around September.  There are also Champion quests that start off at level 30 that give great XP as well.

The economy is fine.  Yes there is inflation but most of what you use you can get without buying it.  The things you do buy you will have the money for.  I would say that you would have 4-6 plat worth of gold by the time you reach level 50.  I guess it really depends on what you want to do.  I mean in about 2-3 weeks I made 45 plat.  I took a character and went to a zone and farmed things that drop fairly common but people never farm and is in high demand.  I then sold them on my merchant.  So there are some good and easy ways to make fast cash.

Yeah if you can get a house for your merchant.  Isn't it pretty difficult to get houses still?  I understtod that most of the lots are sold and if not it's hard to buy them at a decent price.

On Gareth it is most likely difficult, but you just roll on one of the other servers on the cluster.  The other servers are mostly fine.  Also, after 4 months after an account is closed, they are going to repo your house as a way to clean up the housing zones so that new players can get a house at a resonable price.
