    Its a typo of owned.

I was under the impression it meant Player owned ... PWNED! Although it could well be a typo considering how close to the O the P button is, added to that general literacy of 12 year olds on the internet.

It's from Warcraft. There was a typo that said said so-and-so "has been pwned" instead of owned.

Everything I've read indicates that this is where it came from; a typo that caught on.  Please note that P and O are right next to each other on a QWERTY keyboard.

Yep, as stated before it's a typo. I think it started in frantic quake match. In quake(incase you've never tried MP in Quake) you have to type very quickly when chatting... unless you wanted to be fragged that it.

I thought it came from "power owned"...so it was beyond just owned.

Like you got fragged and died..."okay he owned you. "

But if it was like you got "Boom Headshot....you were pwned"

I believe it originally started as a typo of the word "owned" but as I see it now "pwned" to me means he got pounded and owned at the same exact time therefore "PWNED"

What I want to know is where did "LAWL" come from?

Umm..they may have made it popular, but it clearly started a typo.

    No...it's not from Warcraft.

I've been hearing the word since the first days of Counterstrike.  To my knowledge, it started out as, like you said, a typo on a map that some user created.

    Here's what wiki says:

"The word "pwn" may have arisen and spread as a typo of the word "own", arising from the proximity of the 'p' and 'o' keys on a standard English keyboard; a phenomenon known as fat-finger. Sometime in the 1980's, along with the advent of the hacker phenomenon, "pwned" became a synonym for "hacked" or "taken over by exploitation of a vulnerability." The word "pwn" remains in use as Internet social-culture slang meaning: to take unauthorized control of someone else or something belonging to someone else by exploiting a vulnerability."

Hopes that answers it.  Note, its been around since the 80's all you young pups that weren't born until the 90's.  LOL

    Cheers.

Thats crazy cause i didn't even hear of the word pwned until like 2002 or 2003 and i played games all through the 90's. It seemed to come from nowhere cause of Counter Strike and then in 2004 it suddenly just went mass market with PurePwnage.

WoW fanbois claim everything is from WoW. Actully i remember hearing it while playing Quake.
