Delays pave the way to polish, and polish wins. (look at ... the big one)

besides, i wasn't hyped up enough to be shocked at this, leave the mmo world for a few months peoples, you won't believe how everything changes.

March 2008! Crikey. Wonder if this in part a tactical decision waiting after WoW release their expansion.

I was really really afraid this would happen, when I first heard that Funcom were to develop a Conan MMO I thought to myself "holy sh1t, that game will suck" Based on the screwup called Anarchy-Online. But after viewing some screens and video it looked promising.

And with these pushbacks I can sense the old Funcom is coming back, trying to release unfinished crap, realising the code is screwed up, pushing it back, screwing with it some more, then finally releasing it anyway because investers are tapping their foot, then patching pretty much constantly making "war codeing" just to keep the stuff up...

    Anarchy-Online, anyone?

I'm thinking this is a bad company move right now as the MMO market sucks and it's stale as hell which is one of the bigger reasons WoW is/has been so successful.  But after reading their statement, it looks like the game sucks worse than the market now and they need to go back to the drawing board if they want to make any money.   Bad move but I guess good that they don't want to release a dud.

They are probably being very careful with the release of this game considering how bad the release of AO went.  I surely would of loved to give this game a go in October, but I'd much rather they release a working & playable game in March than a bug filled mess in October.  Though missing the Xmas shopping season is really gonna put a damper on their potential sales.

Its a good thing... it means at last some Devs are taking notice of how unfinished broken releases are unaccetable in todays market and WILL come back to bite them in the ass...take the time now to fix what's wrong and release a polished product, that way you don't lose players and have bad publicity immediately after launch.

March 2008 is probably going to conflict with WoW's new expansion even more, to be honest. So I don't think that's the problem.

More than likely, Microsoft is preparing to release a new Xbox 360 in order to combat Sony's gathering inertia. This 360 will be able to support DirectX 10 and thus allow the 360 to support 'more games' (AKA: New Amazing PC Games). This is an issue because it costs unneccessary amounts of money for developers to 'retrofit' games to DX9 in order for the the 360 to play them... so...

Conan will be ready. And will be 'improved' from its original release intentions. But they're going to hold onto it until Microsoft is ready to release its DX10 console.

Just keep your eyes peeled for other PC games to have this issue as well. Being told to 'hold off' until the 360 can support them. Its almost a no brainer at this point...

Putting out a new xbox 360 for dx10 would be dumb. Then New xbox 360 games would be only playable on those thus pissing off older model 360 owners. If I own a 360 I expect it to play all 360 games ever made. They could add cool stuff for the newer machines but they still need to retrofit the games for old 360's.

And thus, people shall slowly understand just why the 360 is such a poor console.

You can rant about sales and hype all you want. But anyone with half a brain knows that investing in a 360 is a joke. Its a temporary system, that will never outlive the 4+ years most consoles do. That's why the PS3 was so expensive - its a console built to last, and not limited by Direct X.

Microsoft doesn't care, however. They ripped a huge number of suckers off. And now, I suppose, they've condemned Age of Conan too.

Post poning the game is most likely the best decision, but having announced a date was their failure.  You never ever announce anything until it's done; take a note from blizzard.  They always release information on their product after it's pretty much solid gameplay.

Luckly AOC touts a completely unique experience unlike anything out there today in the MMORPG market.  Games like WoW and other mmo's use a targeting system where you click on enemies and auto attack.  AOC uses a twitch based system which will put it into a niche market; no matter how many people play WAR, AOC will have that one up on them so if they do it right and make it fun (think zelda for gamecube/wii) it'll be amazing!

  • DrowNobleDrowNoble Member UncommonPosts: 1,297

Well Blizzard did actually announce that The Burning Crusade would be a late 2006 release.  When they pushed it back to January 2007 that did annoy a lot of people who were looking forward to an Xmas release.  One thing Blizzard does do well is taking their sweet time releasing product.  With RTS or action games (Diablo) that is a good thing, but with a MMOG you have to go faster than 26 months for the 1st expansion.

WIth AoC hyped "unique" combat system and M-Rating, I don't have a problem with them taking their time to get it working.  They had just better deliver when it does get released or it will blow up in their collective faces.

Not really...theres no where on the net that states a new 360 will be made for DX10, nor is there any official statement from Microsoft that states the current 360 consoles wont be able to receive a DX10 upgrade. Its like a computer...install the new DX software and then it shall work. AS for sony...well hahaha i doubt the ps3 is built to last...heck the games for it really suck and the graphics look like the ps2 with more polish. ppl said the same thing u JUST said about the original Xbox...well look at them now..it lasted how long??? If microsoft didnt know how to make good hardware, then how come they are the world leaders in hardware AND software technology??? Nuff said

back to the main topic of the thread:

WHY would u ppl complain about the push back when you are the same ppl to complain that u didnt think it was ready since there was no announcement for open beta when it was to come out in october...they are smart as to what they are doing and you should all be thankful that this decision prevented a buggy game like some others that we know about. they actually care about the players, hence why the decision and im all for it. you complain when they DO ignore u and release crap, and u complain when they listen to u and want to give u something good...make up ur minds or dont even play...simple as that...real gamers appreciate what developers try to do for them to make the gaming experience as best as possible...

Oooh a PS3 versus Xbox 360 debate. How I am not prodding that with any length a stick.. well .. except to say anyone that thinks either console will still be the greatest after 4 or so  years is a little out. It'll still be around but companies have shortened the lifespan of consoles to there advantage and they'll already now have the next thing on the drawing board.

Anyways the release date being pushed back is probably a good thing. Anyone thats saw how VG sufferred due to (bad management first) and secondly being deployed faaar to early. That said maybe its because thw game has serious techincal and gameplay flaws which we dont know about. Maybe tis only fora spit and  polish.

As for other games. They wont make any difference lets face it most people have enough disposable income ot swap qite readyily between games. And any market sections which dont can pick up the game later as lets face it they drop 50% in price in the first 4 months quite often. In the end people wanting to play cause of gameplay will win out. They might go via  different route but if AOC is any godo then they will come. Assuming its any good tohugh...

HAHAHAHAHA!!! well you cant really debate the PS3 against the 360....its a no brainer. the ps3 isnt really a system since its not that reliable, its priced too high, and even all the good console devs out there dont really want to use it. I mean the game that was only supposed to be exclusive to Sony's consoles "Devil May Cry" THEY even thought it was a joke so now they are making the game for 360 (it will also be on ps3 id imagine, but their focus is on the 360 version since u can do more with it).

Kudos to Funcom, this shows a good strong management team, yes we all want it released now but those same people lambasting funcom for delaying would be whining and crying on the boards about bugs when it went live.

How many would conan loose if they went live and it was so full of bugs and problems it created negative review and feeling, far better to wait and create a much more pleasant early user experience.

By this decision they made I will be pre ordring two copies for me and wife.

Its not the easy decisions that mark a developers quality but the hard unpopular ones that do.

  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726

I'm not so sure this was a hard decision for Funcom. They are still reeling after the release of Anarchy Online. Even today, 6 years after its release, players are hesitant about trying a Funcom game if they experienced the release of Anarchy Online. Funcom can't afford to have Age of Conan come out like that, both financially and with the trust of the MMO community as a whole. By pushing back the release date, they've given themselves more time to fix problems that were pretty apparent based on what FC has said about the feedback from it's beta testers. That sounds like it was an easy decision to make. Unpopular, very much so, but not really that hard.

Anyone remember WoW being announced q3 2001? Estimated for release q4 2002?... Actually released q4 2004?...

  • SweedeSweede Member UncommonPosts: 210

I have no intentions of trying WAR when it arrives, and who says it will be bug free? AoC i will get whenever it ships, always liked the comics, hopefully it will not be yet another more of the same as games like vanguard, lotr, wow feels like.

I have an article I think you really should read there Gamerman.

    www.gamernode.com/News/3641-Can-you-kill-a-PS3-The-answer-might-surprise-you/index.html

That kind of kills the whole not reliable aspect. How many PS3 systems have been warrantied because they had the Red Ring of Death? When the 360 came out, it didn't have crap for games either. That's how every single console has been as far back as the original NES. The quality games don't come until after the console has been out for a while.

Going a bit further, the Pro 360 is $349.99 and you can't play HD-DVD movies on it and comes with a 20GB hard drive. To get the HD-DVD player, you have to add on another $179.99. That puts the grand total at $529.98 for out of the box comparability with the PS3. The PS3 you can play Blu-ray movies right out of the box, it comes with a 60GB replaceable hard drive.

    Good news and Bad New.

Good news is surely they will make this game more perfectly.

But bad news is I still have to wait more.....

  • pressedNutzpressedNutz Member Posts: 36

    Tears,

I've been sooo patient! Damn them! Then bless them for taking the time to polish.

AoC is gonna pwn all the compitition.

Seriously nothing out there even comes close. Tabula Rasa might be fun, but come on! AoC has way more to offer than any MMO to date, period.

Anyone who thinks this game will lose customers to other big name MMOS coming out sooner, has to pull their heads out their A$$. Seriously this is the first real, 3rd-gen, MMO being released. Everything else is just remodeled and retextured rehashed bordom in a box.

    my 2 cents.

PS: Funcom, I will be a good beta tester! I know how to write QA reports!
