What I feel WAR has done best so far

Considering the game isn't launching for another what 6-8 months... and considering I'm between games so going crazy looking for the 'next' one.

I'm feeling that WAR has done an AMAZING job of hyping the game, Paul Barnett is a very good very high energy guy, kinda crazy, but thats what they want. The release of informative and good looking podcasts of a game that is still that far from launch, the presentation at Gameshows, and the footage that has been distributed, and lastly last week they had a Q&A with several fan sites , I think about 3 gigs unpacked of video , looked great and kept the hype up.

Always seems just when the last tidbit of info drys up, someone or Mythic releases something new, of course I think the floodgates may open a bit at the Leipiz Gameshow as well as the Aug newsletter.

Anyways I know it's not the game they have done best so far, but they made me crazy wanting to play.

    I totally agree with you.

The way they are handling their marketing is an example for the whole industry. Of course, not every company has his own Paul Barnett but nonetheless, i think you can at least find "one" dude in each company marketing department to be enthousiastic enough to sell their product with their own style.

Really gives us buyers a good idea of the product before it releases, and keep the hype not fading if anything.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

I agree and I will add this.

Paul Barnett vs Brad McQuaid... who wins?

Also your last sentence, what have they not done best with the game?

I hate hype as a concept.

I believe hype relies too much on peoples imaginations and not enough on substantial solid evidence. I made a long post about this on the AoC boards a while back.. but the line that summed up my thoughts the best was:

"Proof shows us things as they are. Hype shows us things as we imagine them to be".

Naturally I had originally posted about it in reaction to the hype of AoC and the lack of much evidence, but you reminded me of it here with your mention of WARS hype. So what does anything I just said have to do with your post/question?

I'm getting there.. slowly :)  I do not feel that hype alone is what WAR has done best so far - but hype PROPERLY backed up with evidence. We are treated to Paul's hype machine to be sure, but at the same time we get to see tons of game footage. We get to see with our own eyes the progress of the game, starting areas, quests,  pvp, classes, races, even areas that haven't been completed yet, all of the things that Paul raves about. And that makes what he says far more real and endearing. You do not get the same kind of feeling just by reading some dev post or written news update, which could easily contain deception or describe features that might never actually be implemented.

Well hopefully we can give enough people credit to not follow hype SOLELY. There are videos of gameplay for this game out there to view. As you say hype properly backed up with evidence.. and Mythic is at that point. Also keep in mind everything always starts as a concept and most concepts won't see the light of day without proper hype to gain support.

    That make sense?

Their marketing hype, being intentional or by word of mouth, is definately out there.

I'm still skeptical of the instanced scenarios, and i'm not liking the animations and sounds.  Overall, it's looking like a good game though.

Edit: forgot to add;  I agree with siresper, Mythic has been very good at releasing all these gameplay videos.

The first thing that got me interested in this game was Paul Barnett. Then I watched some videos and I was hooked!

Darkfall came to mind when I read this... dunno why.

But I agree...Mythic has done a nice job of hyping the game and then backing it up with footage we can see, demo's that everyone can attend and get on the game to play some etc.
