we are burned out the genre itsself? Maybe the genre is getting lame, it was once fun because it was new, like back in the days of EQ and UO were extremely fun because they were a new thing and looking forward to how they progressed, but as we played more and more of these over a long period of time, going from WoW, to EQ2 to etc would it matter what came along now and that we are just burned out of mmorpgs as a whole?

From my time on here I would say that a LOT of people on this site feel that way....it seems that way at least.
That is the feeling of all long-time MMOG players, to a certain degree.
Yes, it is a burnout. Luckily, there comes a time in our lives when the time we can spend in alternite lives (MMOG'S) becomes very limited, and we will re-learn to appreciate the small things within games, and not expect the second coming of whatever from every new release.

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
Also another reason is that for example you loved EQtill you got burnet out on it then you find all the new games are just based on EQ [such as WoW] and you dont get into such games because its just more EQ just in a different skin. Its not because such games are bad its just that you are already burnt out on such games before they come out because they are based on a game you ahve played for a long time and consiquently are burnt out.
Which is why most want something different to the same old fantasy game with levels and collect 10 rat tails type quests. Not because such games are bad but because such games have been played to death already. Which is one reason EvE does well for what it is because its both different and unlike any other game.

Yea, its true for most of us. Once the new wears off and youre stuck with a bunch of MMOs that are almost exactly the same, things get old. IMO, the genre has a ton of potential that developers are just flushing down the toilet in favor of easy content and cheap, shallow gameplay...

agreed.
We just have to hang around and wait until something happens to the genre itself. The whole log in press "w,a,s,d, press 1,2 ,3....., repeat" got a lil boring.
agreed.

Totally agree with the both posts....specially with the second one...
I think its time to have something completely different and at the same time fun and nice to play....im getting bored with the skill's quickslots and press 1,2,3,4,5.....as labg11 said......
And even the races, we're all sick of elves and dwarves and whatever.....

I agree. Only one MMO has ever captivated me so completely that whether it was casual play or raiding I knew the story would be amazing and the adventure wrought with fun! EverQuest. Any more... it is the community that holds me nigh to the story or willingness to play. It's the people. Fantasy MMO's replicate the major predecessors <-SP? To me I find parts of my favorite MMO's scattered throughout a wide array of games these days. My favorites being EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot. It is this reason that now I play City of Heroes again. Played from the beginning, left after two years in, and now am back. It's not for the ease or even difficulty. It is for the community. To share drawings of superhero, villain, or life around us everyone is accepted. The server my characters are on, the SG that has been around since five weeks after the came was brought out for retail, I LOVE the community there. And I miss the community of my old two favorites but now... ghost town.
I agree with the original poster. It's getting old.
Retired Max LvL and Raiding for - EQ - DAoC - Dungeon Runners - WoW - LoTR:Online - GW/All Expansions - CoH/V - SWG *** Currently Playing EQ2 *** Awaiting - PoTBS!
what about warhammer 40k then? or one of the spin ofs? was it necromuday or something? a table top game based on 40k but on a post apocalyptic world involving aliens mutated people assasins and such. that could reignite the whole mmorg thing i think. i always think of the group of mercs in alien 4 and think it would be great to have a merc type game where each member f your party are the same class but different skills such as a heavy weapons expert, explosives, general all rounder.
I started in the good old uo days playing mmo.. but now i just try different mmo's. i miss a good sandbox game. where you log in and think what do i want to do today. not what is the next quest in line.
its sad to see this market go blaaa..
Bla bla blabla
I too am bored with the games that are out. I am constantly looking for a new game to play, only to find out that it's almost exactly the same as the previous game(s).
What I really want is a game where I have the option to play solo, all the way to end-game, even if the road there is difficult. I love the social aspect of gaming, but I don't ALWAYS want to have to be in a group.
Yea, I think the genre definitely needs some changes.
In order for a new MMO to compete and gain new subscribers, it will need to offer things to keep their subs and attract new "non-MMO" gamers. For years, the MMO market has recycled the same players. WoW and LoTRO had the ability to attract non-MMO'ers, and look at their success.
Some factors that are vital (but not all necessary):
-A world or storyline people are familiar with through books, movies, stories.
-More of the "Hey cool I want that" factor, rather than the "been there done that" which plagues the genre today.
-Complete crazy customization. From appearance to skills. What makes MY character unique? Think COH character appearance and Anarchy Online skill/implants.
-Features from other genres, FPS, Fighting, etc. Features that would draw "non-MMO'ers".
Games I think may be successful (excuse Mr.Obvious):
Age of Conan: 50+years of Lore from many books and stories. New interactive Combat system. Developer has a bunch of experience with Anarchy Online, and appears to know what they are doing.
Warhammer Online: Ingenious devs with good ideas for ingame quests and events. May look a bit too much like WoW (Dwarfs, Orcs, oh my), but will be a success if the gameplay stands up to the hype.
Tabula Rasa: Sci-Fi MMO, many call a "FPS". However what do you expect with a MMO where the main weapons are guns? I still find it hard to believe that a game engine will be able to manage large battlefields with all the particles, sniper zoom abilities, etc. If they can pull this off, it should attract a good sci-fi fan base.
Gods & Heroes: Rome and Myth based MMO with the ability for the player to hire "Minions". While a good idea, the game doesn't look like it does anything else differently. Basically a cookie cutter MMO with the ability for players to get a squad of pets. If they can find more than one (minions) way to make the game stand out, then it should do well.
Note that some of these games I have seen and played firsthand, and others I have watched a ton of videos and read about. I can't say which ones or any other details.
Thanks for taking the time to read through this, I went off on a tangent
I always thought about what UO could be like today had they expanded their sandbox instead of changing the game. Same thing for SWG, I guess. But expansion doesn't necessarily mean more lands. UO did add a few very good things, such as customizable houses and the plant system. But they did too much changing away from their roots of sandbox-iness.
Once upon a time....
Yep, bored with the genre is probably right. But, I remember too well how great it was when I wasn't bored, and when the whole concept of the MMO was new to me - seriously fun times. I'll keep watching what's happening, and keep trying "new" stuff. Eventually something amazing will happen again in computer gaming, but I have to seriously consider that maybe I need to get away from my computer entirely for a few years to find the next great addiction, and come back later. Thing is, I don't want to because the good memories are still too fresh.
I agree with this statement. To many games today are like having a second job you pay for. But if the questing was not there many people would not know what to do. I think what is needed is a different way to play. On the does away with questing raiding and levels and has a different approach to characters. But along with this the devs need to create a way to expand what can be done in MMOs. Once you do a little questing, then do a little crafting and do a little raiding and then a little PVP, you pretty much have done it all. Maybe there is nothing else. Maybe we have reached the zenith of the MMO until tech reaches the point that actual virtual "worlds" can be created.
Yep happened to me. That's why when people ask if a game is good or not I simply say the good points and bad points, but doesn't mean the game is bad. WoW is a good success, but not my cup of tea. Same with LOTRO, etc.
Personally my years of MMO experience has just killed it for me. I simply played to many MMOs and it burnt me out. Untill that special something comes a long my MMO days are over, because nothing has what it takes to satisfy me atm. I've played it all too. Same goes for my fiance.. she can't stand MMOs anymore. We keep saying we miss EQ1 so badly and wish those days never ended.. hell we met each other in the game and eventually got to this point.. engagement.. we loved that game.. we'd visit the zone we first met on out anniversery every year too. A lot of memories there.
Just the out-dated graphics and the hardcore gameplay is to much for the time we have now. We just can't do it. We wish EQ2 would just be scrapped and duplicate EQ1 zone by zone, but with a new engine. New features.. and easier leveling. Then shutdown EQ1 and port everyones stuff over to EQ2 so those players don't lose out on their hardwork (or ours). We'd be very happy. Saddly this will NOT happen at all. We tried EQ2.. while it was fun.. it didn't have that same feeling.. it was just gone and we knew it would be for a long time if not forever. Tried wow.. hell tried everything on the market.. it's just not there anymore.
We currently play Oblivion and Stalker. With mods we've turned them into MMOs. Playing Stalker accross lan using a mod that allows you to play the full game instead of the cheesey multiplayer. As for Oblivion we use a lan mod that allows lan access for up to 2 people only. Little buggy, but works.
So far they are a much better experience then any MMO we can find. Next game on the list is Bioshock which is pre-ordered already.
We plan to try AOC and Tabula Rasa, but I just don't think we'll get the same feeling back again.. We just don't see it happening.. I think we are done with MMOs.. forever
We are developing our own game, while not an MMO. It will be "like" an MMO in the aspect of a massive persistant world, but it's aimed at single player like oblivion, but set in a setting like the show "Ghost in the Shell". Multiplayer will be supported though (8p lan, 16p dedicated server, 1000p $5/month servers). It's in DX10 with PhysicsX intergrating. Environment is 100% destructable and interactable.. 3 races as of now. Thousands of character customization options (this is just at the character select.. doesn't include in-game items and "other" things). So far our graphic engine is near completion.. game engine is still being worked on.. network coding is near completion (we really won't know till it's intergrated into the game engine). Next gen technology supported and is our goal. It is a 2 person team.. me and her, but it's going well so far.. just time consuming as expected. Development cycle will probably be a good 2years before we can get a working demo ready. *shrug* we are having a blast with it though. No we arn't hiring so don't ask and no further details will be given.
Sorry went off topic there LOL. Anyway yes I agree 100% with the OP.

I've always felt that EQ was a bad game. WoW mitigated some of what i felt were the bad points but eventually the stuff that I dislike about EQ came shining through.
So yes and no.
The genre fails because mmos are all about being social about grouping and adventuring with others, theres no mmos like that today, only time people want to group is when defeating bosses for phat loot, theres no more grouping together to defeat regular mobs for xp, or grouping together for fun, even games nowadays WoW being one of them penalizes you by XP if you join groups. Its the we take away your XP because groups kill faster idea. Its not about killing faster its about having fun with others. I mean some soloability is nice when you just wanna play for a few mins but a game built entirely of solo fails hard. I dont mean just raids and instances i mean grouping for xp and for fun.
I know I'm burned out on MMORPGs.
Started way too long ago, been playing something off and on ever since.
The big problem I see is that they keep creating MMO's to cater to the "extreme" end of each side. Like World of Warcraft, extremely easy, solo friendly leveling experience. But also extremely grind happy, gear oriented, time consuming "end game" in both PVE and PVP.
There is very little to zero challenge in the journey to the end game thus making reaching the end game easier, and once you get there it's all grind, repeat, grind grind repeat repeat.
The only true end game that isn't as much of a grind, if done right, is PVP. Unfortunately, PVP has often been the "back burner" to PVE gameplay and PVE end game, and no matter how good the raiding/end game PVE is, it's never going to have the same spontaneous fun that PVP offers.
PVP offers the challenge of competition, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. But it only works so well if skill plays a much larger factor then gear, or level, or the amount of time / money you've sunk into it.
Why do so many people still play Counterstrike? Halo? It's PVP. Skill based PVP.
Why do you think every major game (mostly) is doing instanced, group vs group PVP as it's main focus for PVP? to imitate skill based pvp in FPS games like CS and Halo. Open world PVP can be fun and entertaining, but only if there exists a natural balance, which is hardly ever the case.
Open world PVP is always the overpowered masses versus their prey. It's fun for the those doing the slaughtering, for a time anyway till they get bored... not fun for the slaughtered.
This is why my hope for the genre rests in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. If it doesn't live up to my expectations, if it doesn't fill the void every single MMO out today has created in me.... guess I'll be using my XBOX360 a LOT more then my PC.
heh what other genre do you have people obsessed and playing every type on the market, or have a website devoted completed to them. (could be wrong- unless there are people that play every fps/rpg there are and there are websites dedicated to them?)
mmorpgs are still popular and of course it will have alot of attention then towards a single player game doesnt still change the fact many people are burned out with the genre you know the ones who keep playing "Fillers" or the ones who have stopped playing till the next big generation mmo comes out which they will eventually quit or call a filler.
Ya- a lot of us have that rosy glow feeling about our first love- the first MMO we played when we learned there was online games. Nothing seems to come close to the fun we had in our "first MMO" I think that's probably the case with most of us here.
So even if we are jaded gamers- playing ANY MMO and having SOME fun beats watching TV every night like a blob on the couch:)
I think one of the problems is that we see the full potential of the MMO is not being reached. Great advances have been made in other types of games, and online gaming but MMOs are somewhat stuck in the content provided. First MMO I played was EQ coming from the paper and pencil hobby, I felt that EQ and games like them would completely destroy the paper pencil market because here was roleplaying that huge number of people could do at once in a world that was full of adventure and danger. Things did not advance the way I thought they would, if anything they have taken a path of least resistance. I blame no particular MMO for this.
