Most of the players don't want to think while playing, therefore wow is so successful. You can switch off your mind, click the same button for hours and you'll be rewarded with a 10ft long glittering sword.
Europe, North/South America, and Australia/New Zealand have a smaller number than China. WoW was able to grow thanks to it's acceptance around the world (with some exceptions). I think WoW appeals to a wide range of people, it is easy to learn. and runs on old PCs.
Wow was the first MMO to hit the mainstream. If has nothing to do with advertising. I haven't seen a single ad on television.
I learned about WoW from someone who was in the beta, and me and my friends bought it when it was released in the US.
I do agree with the OP that being able to reroll on a new server is nice, but since TBC, I haven't done that. I just can't handle the boredom of leveling a character from 1-70. Before TBC, I would reroll on a new server every 6 months.
Well made and tested to destruction. Functionally it is very innovative, and it has taken notes of much of it's competitors improvements to the genre and incorporated them into it's own software. It continues a well loved and established theme and gameplay is along a fairly traditional and widely enjoyed formula.
It is a shining example of how games should be for all other games developers out there.
Yes WoW has been well marketed. It has been distributed world wide by a large international publisher. Perhaps not the biggest and the best international distributer. Vivendi is no EA or UBI, but they are still big enough to get the job done well.
And this is the key to WoW's success. Everything about it has been done well.
Thanx for the feedback on this post about the new servers. Hate boi aside, don't hate WoW. People get jumped on if they bash other people's games. So don't do it to WoW.
I tried most of the mmorpgs that were released around the same time as WoW and though i enjoyed them all, I just wished they had a new server. Each one had its own feel and innovations. But inevitably I'm going back to WoW, too wait for a new mmorpg to come out where i can get a fresh start.
I see why some games don't bring out new servers, but I do think it affects their player base. Most the people I play WoW with, most of them were new to the game on a Brand new server and they agree that they probably would have never stayed with their character if they weren't able to roll on a brand new server.
I rerolled on about 3 servers before I stuck with WoW, first an old server, then a server that had been released 3-4 months out, then a server that had started that night. I stuck with the characters that I rolled on the new server. Its just the way I like to play a game.
Thanx for the response to the posts. Now I know why other games feel they don't need new servers.
BTW I have never really had the bad luck of rolling on a server that was as some people have posted "dead", everyone of the servers I was on had a lot of people on them and I never really saw a bad horde vs alliance ratio on them.
Give a new player today 6-9 months and they will fly a ROKH (Battleship) as well as any 4 year veteran.... in a particular role of course.... what the veteran will be able to do is play more than one role..
LOL. Sorry, just had to laugh at that statement. 6-9 months you say? Just for one particular role? That's not exactly what I would call easy to get into. C'mon you have to admit that Eve is one of the toughest games for a new person to get into and WoW is one of the easiest. There's no comparison.
About those dead servers, If they would combine 2 of the dead servers into one and make the other server a "fresh" server then a lot of the problems with the dead servers are solved and also a new server can be made without anything new.
I agree with the OP that rolling on a new server is fun, especially after a long break or after some server/guild drama that always seem to go on.

Yah, thats how i felt when I was playing EVE. Its overwhelming to be in a small frigate doing your thing. And this huge Battleship comes flying over your head (just thinking to myself in 9 months that could be me.... sigh).
Or you go to train that skill you want and the time for it to train is 20days, 15 hours, 55minutes, 35 seconds... I was confused thought it was a weird game time deal, but it actually took 20 days Real life time to train that skill. But don't get me wrong... the game was fun but I don't have that much time to wait for a skill iwant to train. Not only that but I would go on my alt miner, and wanted to train a skill... and to my surprise i couldn't train any skills because my main guy was training a skill, . only one toon at a time. That and my tristan getting blown up by pirates because i hit a lag spike and was unable to warp to the closest stargate in time.
Eve is a great game but its way to hard core for what i was seeking to play.
I have tried many free trials in the past month or so... trying to find a game that I would enjoy... but I found the same re-occuring problem. Unlike WoW, the games that I tried (COX, EQ, EQ2, EVE, GW), had no new servers. None, zip, no new servers to get a fresh start. I found myself surrounded by high level toons. If other mmos want to compete, they really need to come out with new servers, where everyone starts out at the base level 1. I think this is why WoW has so many people still subscribing. If I choose to reroll, fresh start. I just wait for the patch and Blizzard usually creates one to two new servers where everyone starts out from level 1. This is my opinion... but I wanted to toss it out there. I would love to play Eve, or COX, or EQ 2. If i had a chance to roll with other people on a brand new server. Where noone dominates it?
Lol
as for me, I'd ditch the grind and play a game in which everyone is equal..and have access to every ability fromt he start with many different things to do..like runescape in which u start at lvl 126 with all lvls 99 and with all the gear u want..but no..i had to grind that lvl...and then i sold my acc for a ton of cash.xD

Eve is different. No one 'dominates it'. If your a noob, you dont go in certain sections. period. when you start a new char you stay in safe space until you are ready to take on unsafe territory, whether there are people there or not.
Not sure if many people realized this but the reason why WoW has so many subs players is because technically, the number can't go down. What I mean is, even if you choose to quit, your account is still there, whether active or not, it still stays in their record books. Unless we were able to delete accounts this number cannot go down. So in reality it's not 9 million subs, it's probably more like 6 or 7 million, which don't get me wrong, it's still a huge number, more then any other MMO, but it's not 9 million.
As for the real 6 or 7 million that actually play, it's all a matter of having fun. They obviously play because they enjoy it. So you can't necessarily justify any reason for WoW having so many subs, other then the fact that they play for fun.

I agree man. My main argument was to try to find out why other mmo's I played just didn't seem to grab my attention. I was making the point that due to their lack of having new servers for noob players, made it seem impossible to catch up with the majority of the players playing.

I'm quite certain that Blizzard quotes active subscribers. Either way, though, business is going well for Blizzard, as you pointed out.
As for EVE Online, I agree - 6 to 9 months to be competitive at a single role? You've got to be joking! I admire a lot of what the game has accomplished, but I don't want to play (or pay for) any game for that long. I'm busy enough, and ADD or no ADD, I need some instant gratification in my games. Long, deliberate progressions are for my career, not for my games.

It must be active because Lineage 2 quotes they have had 14 million TRY the game. So it's obviously a good figure, I hate WoW though...

Elaborate, saying "I hate WoW though" doesn't say anything. 'You should say I hate WoW because.... then proceed to say why' Saying that you hate WoW without a statement to reinforce it means nothing, and deems you a Hate Boi . Especially from an "Elite Member"
And to the guy that said that WoW was a button masher.. You couldn't be further from the truth. I play a mage for my main. And I have every interface slot filled with a spell. When in a Battleground/PVP, I would say I use about 20 different spells/items to gain the advantage, I have potions, nets to stop rogues, a discombobulator ray which turns people into leper gnomes, health stones, damage wards, shields, fireball, fireblast, scorch, ae, dragons breath, blast wave, spell steal, frost nova, ice lance, frost bolt, cone of cold, arcane missles, arcane blast, polymorph, and more... (this doesn't even include all my self buffs and first aid) If you want I'll take a picture of my interface.
On my mage if i stay in one spot, I die in like 5 seconds so im constantly moving. I use Blink...
To say the WoW is button spammer, shows me that you have no idea what you're talking about.
From level 1-20, yes its a button spam, cause you are LEARNING, but as you advance just like in every other mmo you get.... MORE SPELLS.
It must be active because Lineage 2 quotes they have had 14 million TRY the game. So it's obviously a good figure, I hate WoW though...

Well this is a rare occassion, I usually write too much. WoW is a good game I admit, it does deserve it's fanbase but it's just not my game. For starters I am really not too settled into the whole RvR aspect of Horde vs Alliance, I'd rather join as anyone and join a clan and be clan warfare claiming dominance over property within a game. I'd also rather that I'd be allowed to misfire and accidentally kill an ally. I'd also like a more PvP oriented game such as where I don't need someone to accept a duel in order to PvP. Oh right, and server drama, I'd like for the server discussions to have a factor in where allegiances lie. I'm also not a fan of the artistic style. I do however like how they've built some of their classes and the talent system which allows classes to build within 3 types of their own class.
As you can see WoW isn't the right game for me, I'm looking to a more PvP oriented aproach. If you'd like to discredit my "Elite member" status, please note I was trying to stay on topic, my reference to my stance on the whole WoW love/hate relationship was supposed to be viewed as complimentary as I'm crediting that Blizzard's stats are probably very accurate and this wasn't coming from some WoW fanboi, and from someone who has no interest in playing this particular MMORPG. Satisfy? Now you made me go off topic
Well, saying ... It must be active because Lineage 2 quotes they have had 14 million TRY the game. So it's obviously a good figure.
Would have been good enough but you added I hate WOW. it wasn't necessary in your comment. So i wanted you to go off topic to explain why you added that statement.
Quote "I'd also like a more PvP oriented game such as where I don't need someone to accept a duel in order to PvP. " Quote
You obviously have never played on a WoW PVP server. Dueling is for the same faction to fight. If you see a enemy player in a contested territory they are fair game.

At the time of my reading it says you are only a hard core. But that aside I just felt the need to say this.
I hate WoW also. That statement is my personal feelings after playing for 31/2 months (2 months longer than I wanted to). Sharing my reasons would only elicit attacks upon them and my reasons are my own. I care not what your opinion of my personal feelings are. Just as you are defending WoW (can be any game at all) it is a personal decision and I would not dare deem myself so superior that my negative opinions outweigh your positive ones and would make you change your opinion. Arguing over each other opinion on a game is as inane as arguing over each others choice in ice cream flavors.
I also hate LOTRO, D&DO, EVE. I have liked many , never loved any and regardless of my likes or dislikes of the game have had moments of fun in all of them except Eve. I know the major majority of those that read this will say to themselves. So who gives a hoot what you feel. And that shoudl be corect. The only one who should really be concerned about my entertainment feelings is ME!.
Its beacuse the game is so simple after 2 minuntes you have figured out everything you need to know, and its a hand made world, which well makes it look cool, but way to small.
Its just a weak game.
Starwars Galaxies, An Empier Diveded, That's what it says on my box anyway.
LOL. Sorry, just had to laugh at that statement. 6-9 months you say? Just for one particular role? That's not exactly what I would call easy to get into. C'mon you have to admit that Eve is one of the toughest games for a new person to get into and WoW is one of the easiest. There's no comparison.
6-9 months for THAT role. You could be ready to tackle in a week.
But ya, EVE is a tough game. Not as tough as everyone makes it out to be, but it requires some thinking.

I won't even go into detail about how wrong you are, you figure out a lot of things early which is what makes WoW a user friendly game, but hardly everything.
WoW hasn't had a new server in the NA for a good while, theory busted.
Unless you're some pvp player this theory just doesn't hold up. Everyone I run with wants an established server to play on. Who wants to risk having a server with no one on it in 6 months. Sounds great in theory if you're a solo player but when you wanna raid or pvp, you're out.
WoW is big because they give it away for free in Asia. Last stats I heard put 7 mil in asia and the other split in NA and Europe. That's still good numbers for here but 7 million in Asia for a free game, who cares.

one of the reasons i think is because wow is multiplatform, where most outher mmo's are only for PC.
and there is more people who use mac these days, than what some people may think!
and many mac users hate PC's & Microsoft Windows.. so not many outher alternative mmo games on the market.

WoW is big because they give it away for free in Asia. Last stats I heard put 7 mil in asia and the other split in NA and Europe. That's still good numbers for here but 7 million in Asia for a free game, who cares.
