My wife is the manager of the Local EB in our town. She came home tonight with some surprising news...it seems that TR is slated as a possible Sleeper hit due to the numbers Of Pre orders in the last two months. I asked her what it took to qualify for that, and she said, it takes at least 50,000 units pre ordered to even to get noticed, to get a action alert it would take considerably more and that right now there was a waiting list on pre order boxes, because they have sold out.
I gotta say I'm surprised by this, yeah most of the buzz is favorable, but I thought we were looking at CoH numbers at the most, it looks like TR make take folks by surprise....I mean I know it won't have WoW numbers, but it will be awesome to see a Sci-Fi MMO with a decent sized population again. I'll be playing the beta for the forst time this weekend....Have to say I'm excited.

Howmany preorders did Vanguard have?
Two I think after the fileplanet Open beta...and one of those got returned.
Number of pre-orders tells nothing of the quality of the game itself, It's just that people know how good Richard Garriott is.
you tend to forget that names count also in videogaming, not only in things you usually consider more important .. a movie made by steven spielberg is different by the same movie made by Hugh Sack
the best blog of the net
Yeah, I'm not sure if large numbers of pre-orders are indicative of the quality of the game. I'm not saying they aren't, just that there seem to be a lot of people that have no idea what TR actually is. Instead they have jumped to the conclusions ‘That must be UO2 cause its made by Garriott', or saw 1 screenshot and went 'OMG, FPS! ', but then there’s others that seem to think it has no PvP, which is wrong, it just has no getting ganked by some asshat over and over again.
I really don't know what to make of TR at this stage, I've heard everything from it being the second coming, to ‘I played the beta and like it enough to pre-order’ to 'WTF!?!?! is this? this is supposed to be UO2FPS!??!!?, this game be the sux, im going to back to my 70 warlock in WoW so I can gank some more 30’s in STV '
Dude, while you may have something really good to say, your text size is way too small to read without leaning 8 inches from the screen or copying and pasting it into notepad, neither of which I'm inclined to do. Please consider increasing it.
Yeah I forgot I should take the older gamers into account and increase the font size. :P
That honestly is a given...and dosen't have that much to do with my post. The Halo series are a perfect example widly sucsessful but suck huge ones in my opinion. I am just amazed that the numbers have increased in the past two months.....that is idicative of a positive beta buzz. I know you see quite a few folks trashing the game as well I asked my friend who is in beta about the Comparisons to Planetside, he said that people who make those comparisions have never played the beta or Planetside, and I would not describe this guy as a Gushing fanboi lol.
I'll keep an open mind until I can log in this evening, I hope the game is decent, but if not there are plenty of MMOs in development.
I think that if this game really does come out in Q4 2007 it may grab some gamers that don't really have any games to play currently.
With AoC being pushed back again ( I know I'll pick up this game to keep myself occupied = )).
Hopefully it will turn out to be a great game though...We are in need of a good Sci-Fi MMO...that's not EvE.
I agree. I'm hoping that Bioware's secret MMO is a Sci-Fi one. Man, we need a damn good Sci-Fi MMO . . . that's not Eve.
I'm not sure I would ever classify anything by Richard Garriot a sleeper hit. He's garnered millions fans through his Ultima series pre UO. I remember my first job at a game store selling his titles years ago. Most the gamers that bought his games are now in their 40 to 70's probably now and ofcourse also the new generation. I think there is a good reason he's decided to put his name so boldy on the title "Richard Garriot's" to let people know he's back and taking no prisoners!!
Def. There are no sci fi games out that remotely do a good job of capturing the genre.

That would be freakin' sweet if BioWare actually comes out with a game...we'll see though. And, if they are then we won't actually be able to play for for another 2-3 years
Or maybe its the fact that the pre-order gets you into the closed beta now.

At 32 I'm old and blind -- too many hours spent late at night playing MUDs in the dark and IE won't increase that font size unless I globally override all fonts and styles ( ' ;
High pre-orders for a game in closed-beta, particularly an mmo, is a bad sign in my opinion. I read it either of two ways --
Now, if all the closed beta testers loved the game so much and pre-ordered, that's a great sign but obviously wouldn't register a blip on the radar. If during open beta/stress test time pre-order skyrocket, that's also an excellent sign. Here though, where closed beta means sound bytes and marketing is essentially your own information, you have to wonder if people are a combination of desperate, optimistic, masochistic or plain foolish if they begin pre-ordering without seeing the game for themselves or reading an independent review. Perhaps it's because the pre-order is only 10 dollars but how many people do not go on to play a game after plunking that money down? There's serious potential right now for people to grouse about a game that falls way below their expectations (not that I'm saying it will, it's just not prudent to make purchasing decisions on so little information.)
The pre-order is only 5 bucks from NCsoft rather than $10. I figure I can buy a combo meal at my favorite fast food restaurant for that so why not, but I have looked at tons of previews and videos before I got it.
It only indicates that it is well known enough and that there enough people that are curious enough to spend $5.
Whether it will be a sleeper hit still depends, because well it might suck and everyone might leave. Remember Vangaurd sold lik 90k on the strength of mostly hype alone.
So it has the foundations for the possibility but its still up in the air.
