I made this point earlier in this thread: had we ALL left, then there might never be another SW MMORPG at all. The fact that most left, but the fact that some didn't convinced them that a SW MMORPG is something worth having AND that they screwed up with the CUNGE. Now, they are making SWG better (although not as good as the game we loved, sadly), but they also seem to be working on another MMORPG, if the rumors are true, which hopefully will be built better from the ground up, and something more to our liking. Would I prefer it if the CUNGE had never happend? Of course, everyone who knows my posts here and on other forums knows this. But given that reality (please note my carefully drawn and very narrow context), I think we both worked together and have won.
Whether or not another Star Wars MMO gets made is unimportant to me, so I see no value in your personal sacrifice for the future of the Star Wars IP. I want the amazing economic and skill systems from SWG preCU, not the wookies.
I suppose that's why you find the current game (and its future) acceptable, where I find it deplorable.
Actually, you must have missed my tens of thousands of words lamenting the loss of economy and skill systems when they destroyed the game we love. That has no relevance, however to being more favorable to playing a game set in the Star Wars universe that STILL has a more diverse economy and a skill system I prefer to any of the major games out there.
At this time, I would rather be a Smuggler BeastMaster in SWG than a Hunter/leathercrafter in WoW.
I would rather be a builder of starfighters than a blacksmith.
I want everything, But, when I can't have everything I want, I will make the best of a bad situation. There is no sacrifice in this. There is choosing the highest possible values given all possible choices. At the price of less than a monie, it's an easy choice.
I found it deplorable for a long time as well, but since Chapter 5, less so, since they brought back pets, much less so. Now I and many others are playing more than we used to, again. I see that as a good thing. If you see that as deplorable (not sure if you do, you just seem unhappy that others are having fun), sorry about that.
Again, is it as good as it once was? Of course not. I might have have been happier living in in the 40s as well. I'm still happy living in America 2007, and playing SWG 2007 as well. I can both lament what has gone and still enjoy what I have, fight for what's better and smile all the way.

I find it immensely unlikely that a new Star Wars MMO would be more to our liking. When NGE hit, LA/SOE made it crystal-clear what kind of gamer they wanted: kids looking for a casual game loaded with Jedi. The lesson I'm sure they derived from the SWG crash was that you can't successfully turn a serious designed-for-adults game into that kind of shallow kiddy game. So anything they build now will be designed from the ground up to specifically appeal to their target market. Which ain't us.

That certainly may be true, but noting that the average WoW player is 28 or so (which is in line with pretty much all MMOs including everquest and the others), it shows that kids might just not be the customers you are looking for in this genre.
The casual gamer is often simply someone who has a job.
You have been paying them 15 dollars a month to play a game that you and they admit is not polished and ready (Beta)?
You met with them and realized that they are humans?
All the people working on the SWG team, although they are all nerds and geeks, are "cool" in your eyes?
You got a FreeAllExpensesPaidTriptoLasVegas? Kudos to you fella, Kudos!
As far as I can see it you have currently made a profit from playing SWG and if you cancel your account now you will be a personal hero of mine whoever you are.
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
So basically to sum up your post: You have been paying them 15 dollars a month to play a game that you and they admit is not polished and ready (Beta)? You left out the fact that I too am proudly a nerd and a geek, and also that I am quite open about that fact. Everyone posting here is as well. Cool is a relative term. You also left out the fact that I have liked the past two Chapters PRIOR to my free trip to Vegas. I make a prioit in most everything I do -- I'm lucky, one might say blessed that way.

Exactly. It's also clear from your posts that no matter what SOE/LA did to you or the game, you would continue to play&pay ~ just because it's Star Wars. So when I read your commentary (absolutely dripping with enthusiasm), I had to chuckle a little....they had you in their back pocket the entire time (meager bitching on message boards notwithstanding).
As you seemingly continued to support SOE/LA through it all, I wonder how effective you feel your "fighting" has been?
Nevertheless, I hope you do enjoy your game. This thread has made for an interesting read in any case.
I get the feeling that fishermage went to the Fan faire and Smedley used the Jedi mind trick on him. Since he seems to believe in the new DEV team because, they're really nice guys. Your weakness disgusts me, Smed is evil and these DEVs are probably the Sigil rejects that no-one else wanted. Oh and Smed and his minions may have convinced you that old players are coming back and staying but server populations say otherwise. Also if things are looking up why not start posting player numbers, since those numbers are increasing by 10%? Maybe it's because you went to Vegas for free so that he could feed you a load of **** in the hope you'd believe it and convince others to sign up?
Which do you think is more likley, that SWG is retaining new and old players and getting large increases in subscription numbers? Or that Smed told you a heap of bull? Because if you look at the facts he's a bare faced liar, or do you actually believe him based on lack of contradicting evidence (if you don't count the fact that the game is empty and sucks)?

I know that, you know that, everyone with anything resembling a clue knows that... LA does not appear to have the aforementioned clue. Whoever is running their marketing acts like those nitwits that are forever trying to censor comics "because they are for kids, don't you know!" Obviously they think games are also only for kids: hence the kids-only focus groups, the "target market" blathering, the "No more spice! It's drugs! Can't tell kids that drugs are OK!" nonsense (disregarding that spice is actual Star Wars canon...)

Need that T rating if ya wanna sell at wal-mart which prolly has alot more to say about what cant go in the game than LA. Drug smuggling i assume would be a M rating in wally's eyes. Im just guessing here though.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Dripping with enthusiasm? I find it full of qualifications yet still hopeful, and full of guarded optimism.
What have I accomplished? granted, I didn'y get the to return to pre-CU, but I and others have gotten them to put back much of what we wanted back. To me, that's a clear win.

Yup The CCA and the ESRB have locked up both industries. Welcome to fascism, friends. But that's another issue.

Yeah, I doubt it has anything to do with LEC wanting to make SWG aimed as a younger audience, like we were told when the NGE went live. Has to be those "fascism", because you seem to know how to spell the word at least, if not what it actually means...
I never said it didn't, and yes not only do I know how to spell the word, I have been studying political economy for most of my adult life (that happens to be my primary field of interest -- although I do have many, being a bit of of a "Renaissance person"). Fascism is thepolitical economic system where an appearance of private property is maintained yet the government controls private enterprise through government regulation or the threat of government regulation, allowing other private organiations to "regulate themselves" to keep the government off their backs. This can be contrasted with other statist systems such as socialism or communism, where provate property is abolished and the government takes these things over completely.
The fascist model is precisely the situation we have in much of today's entertainment, most notably comic books and video games. The various 'authorities" we are discussing cropped up due to fear of government regulation which was threatened by congressional committee hearings. My good Senator from the state of Connecticut was instrumental in this, so I followed it a bit.
But back to LEC -- how do you know that they haven't changed their minds about the younger audience, when they have specifically said that they are now more concerned with getting veterans back? Obviously, they have given up on this "younger audience" that never materialized, and are now concentrating on the Star wars/Complex game lover audience they originally had -- the over 25 crowd.
You may not like it, but this shift in focus has evidently given them somewhat of a bounceback. Of course you won't believe anything they say because they lie. But then, maybe they lied when they said they wanted younger players? Maybe they are lying when they say anything? If they always lie one can't surmise either way.
Remmebr I have said many times I don't trust them, but I am not maniacally against them either. I am just comparing what I see i game versus what they say.
Either way, console and PC online games have to be very careful, especially when they generate and encourage user-made content, and SWG and other MMORPGs do. The ESRB is coming down hard on these lately, and companies unfortunately must be very cautious.

I've logged into the game with the latest trial. Any increase in players has been greatly exagerated, by both SOE and the current playerbase. There are fewer players than when I quit the game a bit over a year ago. The game is currently worse than I remember it. The current game is actually the worse MMO I've ever played. The combat system is horrible. I find it unfathomable that there are people that actually pay money to play it. It really is that bad.
As to Fascism, you do seem to have a good grasp of the definition. Why then, do you seem to misuse the word so outrageously? You seem to have the same difficulty with regards to National Socialism.

How am I misusing fascism when I discuss ESRB ratings, the war on drugs, and how it effects what content we see in video games? It is what it is. We'll have to agree to disagree, I suppose. Next, if you are referring to a certain FORUM Nazi, that is a completely different context, and my use was entirely appropriate. The person to whom you are hinting at is a tinpot dictator in a small pond who abused his authority. Thus, the colloquial term nazi, shorthard obviously in that case for Forum Nazi (in fact I used that term first, then went into shorthand), was accurate. I am sure given REAL power in the real world, he would be an equally frightening creature as others of his ilk. What is ironic is that a site that was created for intellectual liberty on the subject of games has become the opposite -- a forum of hate and control. You toss out the terms "Fascism" and "Nazi" with wild abandon. By doing so, you greatly diminish the horrors perpetrated by actual Nazis and Fascists. Comparing someone who locked a (by your own admission) redundant thread you made that was devolving into a flame war, to folks who murdered several million people, based on their ethnic origins, makes it hard to take you seriously. Then again, after trying SWG, as it currently is, your statements proclaiming it in any way improved do that too. That is without taking into consideration your all expenses paid trip that SOE bribed you with.

They may or may not have changed their minds about the younger audience, but the "easy-peasy game for casual players" focus is still firmly entrenched. Evidence: NGE isn't gone. The current minor "bounceback" would have been far larger and come far sooner with a return to pre-NGE gameplay or at the very least classic servers. Don't bother saying "They can't dump it, it cost too much!" NGE's development is a sunk cost; "getting some use out of what we already paid for" is a bad idea when it costs you customers. Yes, there have been some good changes of late (a couple of which would have greatly improved the CU), but it is a bad effort at compromise. It doesn't make anyone at all happy, major parts of SWG are still broken, and the devs are still specifically ruling out the changes that we know would fix many things.
First off, thanks guys for the wonderful compliments. Second, my opinion of the game itself has been improving slowly, over time, as has been the opinion of many people playing it. Chapter 5, and re-engineering, has made crafted items better than loot at several levels of play, which has been good for the player economy. we had this allready in a better system... The build-a-buff system, while somewhat more complicated that many players like, still adds much diversity to the game, and makes entertainers worth having around again. Also, the partial return of something similar to the old hybridization is also a good thing, which can be achieved by getting the right buffs on your combat ready ents and traders. So they removed buffs claimed how unbalaced it was and yet put it back in? Again redoing something that was done better in the 2 oter systems. In Chapter 6, while I think they went overboard with the dificulty increase, we still see many vets being thankful that the "NGE Easy" game is over. The return of something like Creature Handling and Bio-engineering is more than good, it's been great for the game. It is now a vey complex minigame, and I know many players are enjoying it, and I see more vets every day from the old days logging in and trying it out. And it will change again.. This issue and many like it change publish by publish. This reminded me of the Cu launch alot. The CH or beast mastery thing was a good attempt to bring back something. Problem is both professions were better back then IMO. The current one is more like WoW's hunter class than the old finda a baby, raise a baby. To me this is a pokemon+WoW rip. Not saying its bad at all, just more lets copy another game issue i have with the current SWG. Will those vets stay? Only time will tell. Either way, all these things are good things. Held me all of about 2 hours total. The same combat benny hill on crack and awefull 9 button target system kills it for me. Beta wasnt this bad IMO. My opinion of the game and its state was improving already when I was offered the free trip to Vegas. My trip, and meeting those folks, only solidified what I had already seen online and in the game -- they know they screwed up with the NGE, and they are shifting focus to try and bring back whetever they can that we loved within the new system. The game could only go up its sucked since pub 9 for alot of players. So their screwing up goes back to beta. New dev team same lack of structure and vision. They have been told what will keep and increase the player base. But like any child they just dont listen. They only hear what they think we want. 3 years and people still wanting a system thats dead and gone not tell anyone anything? Would I rather have pre-CU? Of course. Depends on which publish is used. Pub 8 with bug fixes to 13 yep. Would I rather have even the CU? Damn straight. Wow clones in SW clothing nah ill pass. This is were the game lost me and many others. Most of us played both games. But when many that left for WoW came back to the Cu they left again cause why play a bad copy of a polished game? Same with the NGE it is a bad copy of a polished game. The talent system is a direct knockoff. If youve played both its scarey how much the SWG Devs stole from WoW. Again my opinion. That being said, once those are removed from the equation, what do I want? As much of my old game as I can have. That is what I am seeing them try, and I will be supportive of that endeavor, whether I get free trips or not. So like many you settle for less cause you love Star Wars? Hmm bugs, more lag, low player base, broken UI and talent system. Wow its like paying for half a car with the promise of the motor and each part will come..eventually.. Now all we need is a humble apology from Smedley. That would be a VERY smart move on his part....but ummm I think he is more proud than smart, which is indeed a pity. Dont care at all about this. He is the guy who is so out of the loop its comical. He has no clue cause he is the boss. Like most bosses they know numbers and pie charts. Gameplay and fun are far from their priority list. Its about making the most money for the least effort. Still, given all we have seen, and the lack of an apology from Smed, the best I can give them is guarded optimism, heavy emphasis on the guarded. IF people DO come back now, it will be rewarding good behavior, and hopefully will lead to more of the same. Some may comeback most wont stay. The reason is the game has changed too much too often. That and the fact the game we all purchased and spent allmost 3 years in is gone( most of us were in beta long before it went live) The game offers the old players nothing at all. We have done most of it with better gameplay mechanics. Most of the content was the profession system. Most of us like to Earn our things and have lots of options. Why play something that is still in a beta state? Oh yeah its got Wookiee's..... I hope that clarifies things a bit better. No need to explain a thing. You like many will settle for words and promises cause you have met them face to face. Most of us have taken our money elsewere and have moved on to other games and such. As much as i love the Star wars world i honeslty find nothing FUN about the current game. I suppose its cause i played the best version and dont want to settle for a system that has been dumbed down. For me its not hate, im just tired of SWG moving far from the original game i purchased. I dont settle for things just because the IP is loved or something i grew up with. Im about gameplay and player choice. We had that once and it was decided we werent good enough customers. So they decided to remove what little support they had and move to a even smaller group. We all know SWG is in bad shape all the way around. So all i can say is Good luck fixing it back. Best wishes in bringing back the great community SoE decided didnt matter. Hindsight is allways 20/20 to bad they refuse to even put up a classic version. Im sure it would break 100k in one day lol.. Sorry Fish but there is nothing said to you that hasnt been said in the past. Promises and good intentions are fine and dandy. Actually seeing results and keeping those promises is something SoE's track record isnt known for. Same crap different team same issues. History repeats itself when you forget you past mistakes and do not learn from them. If they truely learned their lesson and wanted to fix things, there wouldve been a classic server up long ago. Sadly i highly doubt they can revive SWG if they continue to try to fix the NGE. The NGE is a bad engine all around to most. So i wish ya the best of luck on your conversion...

Back to EvE a game that knows all about player options and complexity..
This all assumes that pre-CU was profitable, and the game isn't now. I don't think those are the facts of the case. If you have any evidence of such, please share it.
Remember I always would rather HAVE pre-CU as well. That has nothing to do with any of the points I am making here.

LMAO.

So basically to sum up your post:
You have been paying them 15 dollars a month to play a game that you and they admit is not polished and ready (Beta)?
You met with them and realized that they are humans?
All the people working on the SWG team, although they are all nerds and geeks, are "cool" in your eyes?
You got a Free All Expenses Paid Trip to Las Vegas? Kudos to you fella, Kudos!
As far as I can see it you have currently made a profit from playing SWG and if you cancel your account now you will be a personal hero of mine whoever you are.
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"

Well said.

That is without taking into consideration your all expenses paid trip that SOE bribed you with.
haha fishermage i think u rock! dont worry about the soe hating kiddies, do ur thing! im glad people are starting to realize that soe isnt as bad as these trolls make them appear.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Hmm perhaps this thread could use some moderation, its obviously getting off subject.

I wanted to add some more but i find that it doesnt matter what any of us say will fix or bring back the subs. They know the only way to bring back the player base they so rudely wanted rid of is the classic game. Until that time most of you can settle for a half a game with more problems than either of the past 2 changes.
I figured you wouldnt have a response cause all of us know they wont change it back or offer a classic version. Heck that makes way to much sense. So until someone else brings out a game that actually allows me the same options SWG once did, ill continue to not pay to play crap.
At one time i settled for bugs, broken gameplay and too many issues to list cause it was a great fun game. The games issues were overlooked for along time cause it was FUN. But when you chase off the once great community SWG had the game isnt good enough to have that majic once again. We all know what will bring us back, too bad it falls on deaf ears like it has for years. To many new products coming out to worry about the New set of promises. And Fish if you go back an re-read all the past summits youll find those exact promises were made before SWG was outa beta. Um we are still waiting for em to keep their promises of a fixed fun game.
The NGE will continue to fail as long as they keep building upon the NGE engine. No amount of changing or adding things will change that. Too bad tho it couldve been one of the best SW games to ever hit. Now its just a game that has a SW skin with poke fest and little medic boxes flying across the screen. The game just doesnt have the complexity it once had and never will again until the NGE is fully removed. Just my thoughts..

Back to EvE a game that knows all about player options and complexity..
This all assumes that pre-CU was profitable, and the game isn't now. I don't think those are the facts of the case. If you have any evidence of such, please share it.
Remember I always would rather HAVE pre-CU as well. That has nothing to do with any of the points I am making here.
