Master Commando / TKM... forgot what took up the remaining Skill Pts. I recall changing out TKM for Swordsman, Rifleman, Carbineer, and even Pistoleer throughout the Pre-CU days.
As borked of a time the Pre-CU era was for a Commando, the CU was a catastrophic nightmare. We could AOE but the damage output was negligible. We were an aggro threat, nothing more, and it pissed groups off. I left Commando for a while because of this travesty. Eventually I settled on:
This was the template I had until the NGE hit the fan. It was not the norm, I confidently will say. I was a pure Ranged Fighter, equipped with Stormtrooper or Scout Trooper Armor. With a blaster, I was fast, deadly accurate, and was extremely flexible in my shooting. I could be devastating by focusing my attacks on 1 target, thanks to a combination of Ranged specials, especially from Rifleman. But I was also quite dangerous as an AOE specialist, a "SAW Gunner" of my group. With my high total accuracy and very, very fast Ranged Weapon Speed, I could make a fast series of area attacks. Fan Shot from Pistoleer was nice, but Carbineer had awesome cone attacks. Due to a combination of Rifleman, Carbineer, and Pistoleer, I had it all. Roots, Snares, powerful single-target attacks, and alot of AOE attacks. I could even inflict a very short Snare over a cone (Carbineer Suppression Fires). The defense was mediocre, healing was dependent on Stimpacks, but I considered it a fair trade for my overall offensive capability. Some couldn't handle my template due to the decreased self-healing and mediocre defense. But I always made myself a valuable instrument for my group due to my sheer firepower.
P.S.- I still have Kodan's Prof.Calculator, the last edition it had, which was at the end of the CU. I still remember that last build very well since I loved it, and simply had to punch it in to see the stats once again.

As far as I remember, no decent pvp jedi with buffs would die to this template with that saberblock etc preCU. Especially not in the GTEF days =P Invincible? I doubt it unless you had the most imba carbine ever. But ye ofc alot of jedi hid and had no idea how to defend themselfs when finally attacked.
Carbs were some of the best DOT weapons in game. Mad mind fire..tripple incap..pwnt. Without a dot carb...this template was worthless pre-cu...vs anyone.
Regarding Carbineer... it was a great "uknown" profession. But in the CU, it really took off. Even the Carbines greatly improved. The big bonus for me was the E11 Mk.II Carbine, since we finally had a wondeful looking "E11" for SWG. Not to mention that it was narrowly inferior to the nice looking Elite Carbine.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. After two long, gruelling years of grinding, I finally made it to jedi Knight, MLS, MDEF, some Heal, some Enh - alas, it's now been so long, I can't remember the last details. But, once I finally hit that template, no BH, however excellent, well-equipped and obsessive ever beat me again. Aaaah, I remember one beautiful battle when I, with my guild, were attacking Anchorhead. Suddenly, i started taking hits from some odd direction. It was a BH/Pistoller with some souped up D10, I think. I immediately hit my 'Emergency Button' (my super macro for eating a tonne of protection, speed and attack drugs and food). Slowly and inexorably, I sliced him to pieces, all the while fending off Rebs who were protecting their city. At the end of its all, after I had delivered the deathblow, he sent; 'U r imba & will be nerfed soo'. Well, along came the NGE and yes, i was nerfed. And so was he, the fool.
without master healer, epic mindpoison would kill ya =P I guess you didnt get any of those... 2 ticks and any target I hit had their mind and 1... just spam that 1.0speed gun with eyeshot =O ofc you could run around with poisonbuffs 24/7 but it would be pretty timeconsuming running for the doc every 30minutes or whatever I died sometimes too ofc lol, its just that theres no such thing as invincible

ye exactly that's what I'm saying, you'd have to have a really nasty mindfire on it to bring anyone down coz you couldnt attack the mindpool with any other attack with carbs right? with just a regular mindfire youd be dead before trippelincap

You're right as far as pvp goes, but I never pvp'd. I spent all my time online in space or hunting jedi.
There were two BHs on my server with this template too, myself and another bad ass carbineer. We where both deadly as hell against grinding jedi (we did not hunt together, too easy). We got so good we decided to one day test our luck against complete templates and we started having much success, at first we hunted full templates together and then separately.
I had a krayt carbine, wasn't the best but good enough to hunt jedi with and I never used dots, nor did my partner BH. Carbines was the secret weapon most BHs forgot about for some weird reason, it has everything from intense firepower to KDs and Dizzies. Jedi always have to heal against us, even with the 75% block, and that gave us the chance (about 8 seconds since they couldn't do anything else after a heal) to KD + Dizzy and lay on as much firepower till dead. Of course this is almost impossible to a fully buffed jedi, but you'd be surprised how many jedi went around unbuffed with a 1mil+ bounty on their head (they get cocky or they where ebay'd).
Best kept secret in my book was a MBH + MCarbs, but I don't pvp and I know people had lots of trouble with carbs in pvp because of the defense stackers.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I did use an effective dot, fireshot from the pistols line, this helped us take out a jedi without buffs and it only takes a couple of shots to get it to stick, mostly three shots.

Simple answer, no producer is brave enough to employ the profession system of SWG pre CU. It had all the elements of a game in advanced mode. You could be anything you wanted. You could choose to be a pure crafter or entertainer. You actually needed others in the game and when you look at the core a bit more you also see that the game thrived due to this system. Players interacted due to needs.
Anything cookie Cutter at the time :P Cause thats how pre cu worked when there was only 1 good template that owned all.
novice fencer with a dot survival knife owned all.
Reminds me of seeing a master swordsman or fencer or something lol, own a Jedi and i was like WOAH Jedi suck lol but this was before anyone had one, was like the only one i saw on the server.

I went through 26 Master XXXX profs to get my Jedi pre-cu. Just as I was getting to the middle of the LS tree w/force run boxes too, the Devs killed it and came out w/the CU followed by NGE. Was almost to Master LS and they nerfed the whole game w/the NGE. Shouldn't have taken me that long to get Master LS, but going to play in the sand for 6 months kind of slows you down. NGE came into being about 1/3 of the way through my deployment so I tried it out when I got back, gave it the benefit of the doubt, canceled all 3 accts after about 2-3 months of NGE. BAH!!!
Due to the siren song of the holocron, for much of the preCU I didn't have a "fixed" template. Before holocron madness, I settled down as MCH/Master Scout/Master Medic with the full pistols line of marksman. Once pub 9 hit, I settled on MCH with the heavy weapons line of BH, some TK, and some force sensitive stuff.
The CU, with its accursed level system, changed that, and I worked to MCH/MSmuggler, then switched to MCH/MPistoleer when the MSmuggler "revamp" took place that did two things: make smuggler a loot dependent profession, and nerfed the hell out of the mezz skills, which I had used with MCH to great effect, making up for smuggler's pathetic damage output.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
Master Creature Handler and Master TKA. I would pick up and drop medic and entertainer from time to time with the points I had left. Nothing like the sight of a danceing wookiee with his pet frienzed grual. Though I must say at the end my favorite pet was a BE Gurreck had the perfect redish coat. Just wish they had not nerfed there running speed. I really like seeing them tear off chaseing things
I made a mistake when I posted my Pre-NGE template.
My pre-CU template was Master Swords/Master Fencer/TKM with a lot of medic (Is that possible? It's been so long - weep, weep - that i can't remember my original character). Anyway, he was unbeatable in PVE and could hold his own in PVE.
At the very start of the game i took up TKM/MC before it was the best of the best. Later on in game i decided to be sniper support type of toon and made a MRM/MDoc.. My last template i stuck with was MRM/Cm4004/Doc 4030 was fun fun fun. My unlock alt was Mswordsman/Doc to loot those nice pearls that never dropped :P..When i unlocked and then became a DJK MLS/Enhancer 4403/Powers 3000..
I also had a smuggler who just sliced and made oh lord mind altering drugs...Gasp!!! Thanks OP now i miss that pile o crap even more lol...

Smuggler = coolest unique abilities + good attacks - always being nerfed...
Master Artisan / Master Architect
I really miss the weapon power-ups like muzzles, they were kinda fun to craft.
