While I've never played WoW, I can say that I have played FFXI and I loved it. It definitely has it's faults (I hated that when you got KO'd not only did you loose xp, which isn't the bad part, but if you didn't have enough of a buff, you would delevel too), but what game doesn't? I say if you like the console Final Fantasies, then you should like Final Fantasy XI. It has all of the goodies that make the other ones so good like Chocobos, Cactuars, Mogs, Molboros, Ifrit, Behemoth, and the list goes on and on! ^^
Just all around, everything is more challenging, crafting takes a hell of a lot of money to progress in and a lot of things are very secretive
it isn't make one thing gain a level it's make 10 things and pray to god you don't lose 2 million gil in a synth and hopefully a .1 of a skill
The social aspect is about the same, you meet people instancing, you meet people grouping, if you like just wasting time they are both great, final fantasy, however takes a lot of time to do anything, you need help getting anything worth getting ever..
Which forces you to be social
I'm a little critical of square enix though because they used to rarely- if ever- update their game. Blizzard, however, has frequent update patches and they put a lot of love into their game..
Both games have amazing GMs, the ones in final fantasy like to have a little fun with their job :] imo
Final fantasy's connection speed is capped at 56k i think so the game runs smoothe as butter except in dragon's aery during nidhogg and lower jeuno :] 150+ people
on my lower end machine Final fantasy ran perfectly with my Radeon 9200, world of warcraft lags uncontrollably in areas such as ironforge and any time there are more than 30 people in an area at a time...
Final fantasy is a lot more challenging imo, it takes a lot more skill to play, the quests and storyline are amazing.
There's nothing quite like it...
I've played both games to the endgame
70 shaman, 70 mage
75 summoner, 75 white mage, 75 warrior, 73 dark knight
WoW you can get 60 in a month or two
Final fantasy you can get 75 in 3 months of heavy determination, faster if you have a godly static party or are a bard
Final Fantasy XI. *It has a more dynamic job system, meaning you don't have to start a new character if you don't like the job you started out with in character creation, you can just change it to something else anytime you want. Every race is able to have access to every job also, unlike WoW. FFXI's job system is a little bit similar to GW, too. Your able to combine two different job's (a main and a support). That doesnt make it any different at all, cuz if you dont like a class in WoW you can just create a new character with different hair styles, gender and whatnot and play, while in ffxi you either change your job and stick with your current character without being able to change your appearance or create a new one which will cost you a buck ( not saying thats a lot or anything but why the hell should i pay to create a new character?). Dynamic job system? Oh wait, your talking about this system where your only allowed to combine a few jobs by others. In fact, its come to the point where if you dont use the appropriate sub job for your main, people will just simply never invite you and call you a noob. I wasn't talking about what other player's find to be a better job combination, I was talking about how FFXI has the option of being able to customize a job to you're personal preference, regardless of what other player's find more appealing. In WoW, you're able to pick your job during character creation, that's it. What if the job you picked isn't everything you hoped it would be? Tough luck, make a new character and start all over. In FFXI, if the job you pick during character creation isn't to your liking, you're able to change it, no harm no foul. *More strategic battles. As said earlier, battle's are slower then WoW's because in order to take down a monster in FFXI, you need to do more then just button mash. More what? Please elaborate. Because the pace FFXI runs at, even my grandfather can master the game. In WoW you need to do more than just button mash. I'm assuming you've never been in a burn party. The only time a fight takes as long as you're saying is when party member's don't work as a group to take a monster down, in which case, yes, a fight will take a long time. That's why it takes teamwork and strategy (skill chaining, magic bursting, blink tanking) to take a monster down in a timely manner. *More varied endgame. FFXI's endgame has a lot more then just raiding (Dynamis) and pvping (Ballista). WoW has more than just raiding at engame and calling ballista pvp is a joke (scheduled and you have to pay to enter lol). You're right, I'm sorry. Wow's endgame has raiding, pvping and auction house camping. *More content for lower levels. Unlike WoW, were it's a constant grind to the highest level before you experience any real content, there's plenty to keep you busy in FFXI at all levels. This clearly shows that you dont know anything about WoW. Theres more quests from 1-20 in WoW than it is in the entire game in FFXI. Let me elaborate a bit here, if your not rich in FFXI, you basically cant do squat but to lvl grind and after doing the first couple of quests and missions, you can kiss soloing the rest good bye. I know as much about WoW as you pretend to know about FFXI. Quality over quantity. WoW may have more quest's than FFXI, but that doesn't mean WoW's lower level content is as filling as FFXI's. I'd trade 10 non-interesting, tediously boring WoW quest's for 1 story-compelling quest/mission from FFXI. "If your not rich in FFXI, you basically cant do squat?" *Farm? Mine? Garden? Solo?(I will "elaborate" in a bit) Fish? As for not being able to solo, you're partially right, FFXI isn't as much of a solo orientated game as WoW is. That doesn't necessarily mean that you can't solo, it's more then possible to solo proficiently in FFXI. *Overall better community. It was also said earlier that this game requires much more grouping then WoW, which is true, though because of this you get to interact more with the community on your server. What community? All I've seen most of the time, japanese players spamming the chat. I dont know maybe its because the EU community is very small. It does require more grouping than WoW, yes but when you start raiding at some point your going to interact with others as well and using teampseak/ventrillo which in FFXI you cant since your not allowed to alt+tab. I'm not saying that the FFXI community is golden, I'm merely saying that the overall quality of it is better than WoW's. You seem to forget FFXI is multi-platform, Playstation 2 user's can use TS/Ventrillo, Xbox 360 user's can use TS/Ventrillo, and while it may not be perfectly legitimate for PC user's to use TS/Ventrillo, it's more then possible.
I agree with this statement, I depends on how you want to play. I played both for at least a year a piece and like them both but WoW has a few more advantages than just the ability to solo that i felt should of been in FFXI. Like exp for quests, better and more useful quest rewards, better vendor trash.
I haven't played either game in 3+ yrs. but I can't ever think of how to (re)start FFXI from level 1 again. The enconomy was major league screwed up when i left, maybe its gotten better but i doubt it. In WoW I tried a trail account and its still a pretty decent start up, you still poor but take up skinning can help get some silver in your pocket pretty quick.
It's hard to answer with a simple answer so i'll try to shed an hoenst opinion.First of all i try almost every mmo out there and i have returned to FFXI.There got that outa the closet, yes i play ffxi.Anyhow,to give a fair answer,FFXi is very much a party type game.Do advance and get things done will require ,either high level help wich is a lame copout as far as im concerned or a party[the way game was designed].WOW you can solo around for the most part and advance without the requirement of a party, however it is not an all out solo game like some asian [healing pot] games are.
I have often ,well maybe not that often but here FFXI battle system is slow.Well perhaps to some it is ,but it is designed that way for a reason. The battle system in FFXI is by far the best ever created, that is the main reason i keep playing it.The battle system is desinged to use your teammates and act/react battle system.WOW is not that fast either but isn't desinged to be as much a reaction game as ffxi is.There are perhaps several games that have better graphics than ffxi's 16 colour pallette, however in all fairness the game was desinged for a very limited playstation system. There is no mounts to speak of and yes no swimming in FFXI,again limitations by the playstation.WOW is a complete game and so is FFXI,meaning you can do pretty much everything you expect in an mmo, from crafting to raiding, exploring. The square enix team is very smart and try to offer the most possible content they can for a limited system. They have chosen not to upgrade the game, because they don't want to alienate the ps2 players, otherwise i am sure they would add a ton more content above and beyond any game out there, right on par with eq2.WOW has a better PVP system as FFXI really isn't about teenage egos needing that PVP fix,it's more about CO-OP/team work. However some like and constantly badger you for PVP in WOW,so if you need that element in your game ,WOW can offer it ,FFXI can't really cept for a seperate based PVP system.Another thing i might add is that WOW has alot more players, for some this is very important.I can tell you however when i played WOW i didn't really notice that many players, not when you compare how many accounts they claim to have active.FFXI noob zones are deffinately less active than say a WOW noob zone.
FFXI is alot more costly to play when comparing time per reward, however the rewards are more satisfying and challenging. The monitary system in FFXI is very poorly designed IMO,and takes a backseat to most MMO's out there.By this i mean your drops and rewards per level are no where near even par. Most games offer fair drops that are useable by your present level.FFXi drops are pretty much a waste and usuallly useable only by a lower level.EQ2 has the best loot table/drop system of any game out there.FFXI for the most part will leave players constantly broke, requiring alot of time farming/camping.
If i wasn't so experienced in FFXI and was just looking for a game right now,i don't think i would join any of the available games out there. From the get go it woulda been EQ2 and FFXi in a toss up [tough decision].Now if i was looking ,i would just dabble around in any free to play games i could find or try out several betas.
IMO 99% of gamers in MMO's are playing for all the wrong reasons.I see everyone of them playing only to see how fast they can achieve the next level. They have no interest to become a part of a game's community,or the longeveity of the games design.Since most gamers only care about there next level, then IMO ANY game out there that has good enough visuals to soothe your pallette would be good enough.Don't limit yourself to FFXI or WOW.
