Just feel like giving some hints to any WoW players that coming into FFXI.
FFXI overall compare to WoW is very different, this game is complex and not new player friendly. There is no practice ground for any new players but you will not lose experience point until level 4.
Let's begin. (skipping all the controls and such)
First thing for new players is acquire a map from a website, www.ffxi-atlas.com give the best maps and easy to pick out. http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Main_Page is next website you should keep on your bookmark. Most information you need should come from this.
Now once you got a character up, you will begin infront of the gate. Any new players should always keep in mind in FFXI ettiquite is very important, because you will eventually party with someone that might be useful to your adventure later on. /shout is not your general chat.
You should always seek for a linkshell (guide) that accept new players, you could "/shout LS can i have it, i am new. "There is always players in the major city looking to add more recruits. You could also have multiple linkshell, so having more then one really helps.
Second, leveling is very basic. You go out and kill. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. But keep in mind, armor in this game make big differences. once you are level 7, get NEW ARMOR, or get new weapons. It will ensure your survival.
Thirdly, ALWAYS CHECK monster's rating before you fight. There is absolutely no way a whm could kill a TOUGH at level 8, Even Even match might be too hard. Stick to what you can kill because death will really sting you.
Fourthly, once you are level 11, its Valkum Dunes time, you COULD SOLO up to 20, but getting a party would make your life easier, because you could solo 1 level per 1-2 hour but partying allow you get a level every 20-40 min (depend on party).
Lastly, always KEEP SIGNET UP! you could get it from the guard with names W.W, M.M, or S.S alike. They will give you a signet. SIGNET allow you to pick up conquest point which allow you to buy "EMPRESS BAND". This band will give you a buff that give 150% for 2000 every 16 hour. IT will helps! You could re-charge every week!.
That is all i have to say, these critical since other stuff are basic.

To this I would add that Signet also ensures crystal drops from mobs which can either be sold, traded to the same NPC that gave you Signet for Rank Points (required to get missions), or used for Synthesis (crafting).
Also... Be Patient. The pacing of FFXI is not nearly the way it is in WoW. You do not get "discovery xp", quests do not reward xp... SE's goal is not to help you level up as fast as possible. NPCs do not have ! or ? over them to indicate a quest - you must explore and speak to them to see if they have something for you. Square-Enix's goal is to provide a vast world (which it is) with a *lot* to do (which it has), to experience with others (which you will). If you go into it expecting, much less wanting, it to be like WoW, I promise you will be disappointed.
The best advice I can give is... go into FFXI with an open mind and have no expectations of what it's like. Just experience it as it comes and learn all you can. Also, do your best to learn how to play your chosen jobs (classes) as well as you can - both solo and in a party. It will prove very valuable later and you'll find that people who partied with you in the past will tend to invite you again in the future because you know what you're doing.
The social element in FFXI is *wayyyyy* stronger than it is in WoW. So, be polite, ask questions, ask for advice on how to make money - do *not* beg for it, and don't be obnoxious. The "Barrens Chat" that's typical in WoW is not tolerated in FFXI and it's one of the fastest ways to either be spoken to (sooner or later) by a GM, or be placed on people's blacklist (ignore list).
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
To be honest I personally start hitting the Dunes at around level 14/15... Since level 10-12 parties often end in disaster, I feel sololing Easy Preys or Decent Challenges consistantly will get you those levels quicker rather than spending 2-3 minutes on an Incredibly Tough Hill Lizard. Going into the Dunes at 15 is especially more worth it for a Thief, where before 15 there are little more than poison in a party...
I think the OP's guide is good, however I find it hard to see most WoW players making it past level 20 in this game. FFXI is a challenging game with a good community, which easily filters out the immature players from WoW.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I saw something in your post wongfei, that really is the truth.
/SHOUT is NOT your general chat !.Man this is so true it's not funny.I get all miffed when i play some other games and all these little kids seem to think the rest of the server wants to hear every single dam thing they have to say. That is one of the biggest things i like about FFXi is the over all maturity level seems to be higher than most games.I do acknowledge players /shout for help with some things, but i do NOT accept players that are /shout there items for sale or there petty arguing. That really bothers me.I couldn't stand seeing the chat in other games, totally spammed with WTS ot WTB every 5 secs,i am just glad it never became a staple of this game.I again figure this has more to do with the over all maturity level of the player base.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You forgot one thing:
Tip ##whatever: go back to WoW.
The reason i post this was because, around this time, some WoWers would be tired at wow by now and move to other games, FFXI is one of the most looked at, i notice this because just last 2 week, i already encountered over 6+ wow player that started in new city (as i love setting my homepoint @ bastok.) I helped them out, but at the end half of these people return and message me "I can't do anything".
It is a complex game compare to many other games, as i played Asian(in japanese/chinese/koreans) MMO as well American/european based mmo. FFXI isn't newplayer friendly as well the people in it. (many ignore new player thinking they are mules).
