Wow...so I gotta say...I've been keeping up with recent MMOs and have been blinded by AoC and Warhammer, and this one completely snuck up on me. I was reading through my e-mails and was informed of a pre-order and a trailor. I did some reading and I've got to say, I'm pretty impressed.
However, I read on the forums that there are certain elements of the game that are FPS but it's mostly an RPG. I'm confused at this. But it really comes down to this for me...can I aim and shoot at what I want? Via say...Planetside? Or will it be the same old click, turn on auto-attack, throw in my skills as they refresh, and be done with it? Like say...Anarchy Online?
Either way I'm certainly looking into it...but any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

ever played jedi knight?
its really similiar watch the videos
they got a weapon and a force power only that its called logos power instead of the force
you aim for both attacks with your mouse but they said you also can auto-target via buttons
Pi*1337/100 = 42
Aye its a Third Person MMO Shooter or. MMORPGTPS as I like to call it. It has a Twitch feel to it (ala Counterstrike) but its based on weapon times, you can click a billion times real fast but you will only shoot as fast as the gun or ability allows. Currently they do not offer incentive for NOT auto locking on things so you can just aim in the area and auto lock on shoot, run, duck, cover, use abilities all that stuff. Think playing a Ranger / Scout / Hunter but instead of a bow you use a gun, and instead of clicking, waiting a second or two and it firing, its near instantaneous to a degree. I find it much more engaging than turning on auto attack and just throwing in specials because your actually clicking to attack and its more interactive.
Hope that helps.

Played (In order of favorite first to least): DAOC, EQ2, EVE, WOW, Vanguard, AC2, City of __, Guild Wars, LOTRO, EQ, Sword of New World, FFXI, Lineage 2, Second Life, DDO, Anarchy Online, RF Online, Archlord, Uru, Ragnarok Online, Shadowbane, Planetside, Auto Assault, Ryzom, Matrix Online, Horizons, Entropia, Sims, Runescape, Lineage 1, AC1, Dungeon Runners
Err, no offence, but I have read a lot about TR (haven't gotten the chance to play it yet though) and even I was confused by those responses.
Ok, basically you shoot where ever you aim, except, when you mouse over a target your targeting reticule (not your crosshair) will stick to the target (how much you need to aim away before it un-sticks will be adjustable, and you can tab between closely positioned targets) so you don't have to aim perfectly.
Hit / miss / damage / etc. are determined by dice rolls and are affected by movement, stance (standing or crouched), and the level of cover (being behind sandbags, trees, rocks and such).
I have heard that aiming at a target with your crosshair vs. aiming slightly away will make you do more damage, but I cannot confirm this.
As has been said, there is no auto attack, and special abilities are more like force powers than ‘burst fire’, ‘sniper shot’ and such.
In conclusion, it feels like a shooter (well at least I think it would) but it’s not twitched based.
one of the designers said that u can shoot/shield or whatever with your mouse and it feels a little bit like an FPS. go to www.gametrailers.com and search Tabula Rasa. go under interviews or whatever you'd like to watch.
The game uses "sticky targeting" , which as you move your targeting over a creature, and you shoot, it will keep that specific mob targeted. As well, you can use tabbing or may just move to another target, and hit a targeted key, which makes them the target.
As of now, it is now implemented, but there is to be duck and cover combat as well...hide behind sandbags, tree's, etc.
The game is "FPS" style, with a mouselook feature, but updates are to be implemented to make it standardized MMO controls (WASD, with full tab only targeting)
And I tell you what, twitch combat, MMO based dice rolls...this game is the bomb..!
But, that is based on uh....conjecture...I know noting about closed beta or anything...no really..I know nothing..this is totally based on interviews...yea, and uh...videos...yea!
Tabula Rasa have good story, and its unique cause its hard to find good SF mmorpg that is not 10 years old (no offence Eve and Anarchy players)
Anyway...at end we will see what will they make of it. I think they can get solid player base if they just open their ears and listen a bit...all they actualy need to do is get best games we play ATM, take best things from them and implement into Tabula Rasa (like Blizz did with WoW).

Would you like some cheese with that whine?
You have a reticle. It move whenever you move your POV via mouse/whatever. What ever the reticle goes over is "targeted". Just like a shooter. There is a setting for sticky targeting delay. On one spectrum it means that putting the reticle on something and taking it off will essentially clear your target. As you adjust the setting the target will "stick" on whatever you last had in your crosshairs for some period of time. You need to keep your crosshairs on a target a certain amount of time to achieve maximum damage, this is indicate by three dots getting closer and closer to the reticule simialr to Rainbow Six games. Moving will decrease the "tightness" and therefore decrease damage.
Hitting tab while having something targeted will "lock" the target in your sights. This will also clear eventurally if the guy goes behind something or you do not put the crosshairs over something for a while. Hitting tab with out using the reticle will do nothing. There is no tab cycling. You must use the reticule to select targets and you must "aim" to some degree for maximum damage (for guns).
The only penalty for using tab is you need to press a second button, but with a medium to low amount of stickiness I don't see how tab really gives any real advantage and really makes switching targets slightly more complicated.
The target lock makes sense since all the weapons are computerized with assited aim conceptually. Tab is nice for marking an important guy in a mob, like a boss/elite, but past that its not a big deal. Gameplay wise you must use the reticle and you must pay attention to how that is affecting you "aim" accuracy(damage). Switching targets is pretty important and you can lose lock if you don't stay on top of things.
If you think about it, its the tab cycling and auto find that is the big thing that makes other MMOs targetting so brainless. Target lock itself is as much a hinderance as a help. On one hand you need to do extra stuff and loose speed in targetting on the other its nice for staying on an important target (ie. "painting" a target, which if you think about is perfectly fine). Since you can neither auto-find a target nor tab cycle it does wind up being more hands on.
In a WoW style MMO if you want switch targets often Tab is your friend in TR if you want to swtich targets a lot Tab is not your friend, the reticle is your friend. Consequently you also need to manually look at your surroundings since you can't auto-find targets with Tab. No auto-pilot. You don't want to do a lot of aiming that is fine and doable. You want the game to tell you where everything is that won't happen.
They did a good job with the battle system. It *feels* like an fps. But it's an rpg-system. You do have to aim, just don't have to be precise about it unless you want to get really good dmg in.
Is Tabula Rasa going to have an Open Beta Stage? or are they just going as far as having to be a paying member of fileplanet?
I wouldn't call it twitch or anything like cs as people have posted before.
It's a GAME. you shoot STUFF lots a STUFF. Little little guns and BIG guns, very fast paced RUN RUN RUN follow the ARROWS to the next npc type game. i would give it a 7 for something new +50 for to easy though.
BITE me it's to easy.
