I don't think Eve wil steal Second Life's crown. Then again, does it have to?

Eve does have the potential to "never stop". In great part because it  being a sandbox type game. Will it never stop, I really doubt that.

Why do you think it will stop? You need to argue in a reasoned way.

CCP's CEO has given quite a few good reasons in the news report why he thinks Eve Online is here to stay (graphics overhall, enthusiastic and experienced players, innovative leadership of CCP, ambulation project, factional warfare, players natural urge to socialise, ongoing evolution of the game). Why do you think he is wrong?

It's important to give your reasoning to convince people, effect change, and to avoid annoying them!

Compared to some of the posts we get here sometimes, his was pretty mild.

Why would anyone want second life's crown?

I don't want anything that dull excuse for blocky, interactive fetish porn has touched.

"Will it never stop?" -- That is a loaded statement which can only be answered with no. It will not be around after space aliens rain heaven from above, or after universe's elastic belt snaps and we all meet Chrono at the end of time. And thank you for berating the poster above for being realistic as well.

Now will Eve be around in a year, two years, or seven years? Very likely.

Of course Eve will stop, everything does.  A few reasons that Eve will stop:

    1. Software Entropy:  Eve is showing signs of this now, Revelations II introduced very little new stuff, but brought with it the desync monster.  The feature list for Revelations III has been pruned.  Are we ever going to get factional warfare?

    2. Competition: Atm there isn't really another space based MMO.  But one day there will be.

    3. Developers get bored:  And move on.

    4. The sun will go nova.

Well that keeps most things in perspective, blenda

Also, for the die hard Eve players, if you were given an actual ship and told you could head out into space to do the same kinds of things for real, would you?  Seems if the humans don't annihilate themselves beforehand, they'll be living a somewhat similar life fighting over resources in space, forming organizations, and building stuff.  Might be more fun than turning to jelly in front of a monitor for the next 60 years.

Nope nothing is for ever.  Sorry about that Hilmar but after four years your game grew boaring.  All this crap you threw out to us still did not make the game any better.  Who gives a flying F*** for a new graphics engine if the game is still boaring.

If a game can keep your interest for four years, that's fantastic!

If I were you, I'd keep skilling my character(s) until end of 2008, when ambulation is out, and return. You will have god-like skills by then!

Why don't you instruct and defend the new players in Eve University? That might give you a different perspective.

As for "Eve will never stop", who knows what the future holds. But it is common sence that everything has a beginning and has an end.

As mentioned before, at the moment there isn't any good alternative to what Eve has to offer. It would be great  to see more sci-fi games of this scale hit the market. But don't think this will be happening anytime soon. Therefore I think Eve does still have a lot of years in its life.

Yet even if there were be competitors, I think Eve would still be standing strong.

Assuming Hilmar can prevent anymore skeletons from lurching out of the closet I'm sure EVE has a few years left in it. Although it seems to me that growth has slowly grinded to a halt this year, since the expansions are less and less exciting with more and more promised features being taken out. Factional warfare was promised last year I believe and if you think you'll be walking in stations anytime this decade you're very much mistaken. The only way any of us will get to walk in a station in by paying the Russians $20 million for a seat on one of their supply runs to the ISS!

2007 has been a turning point for EVE, it went from strong steady and consistent growth to stagnation. Although that doesn't prevent Hilmar from pulling the plug, it still turns a big profit and aslong as he makes money it'll be running. Just keep that dirty laundry under that rug Hilmar! Don't let the subscribers see it whatever you do!

I'm new to EVE, (under 3 month) many of the members in my 0.0 Corp are new to EVE (many are not), the Corp is growing, 0.0 Drone space is very crowded, and we fend off constant attacks (while performing our own).

Is EVE dying? Maybe, but you couldn't tell that by me......

The game does seem like its slowing down a little although i think it wont die for quite some time. It still comes out with 2 major patches a year, and in the least it will be a content patch, which is always good. As for walking in stations....

So i dont see walking in stations that far off.

The number of people logging in to play Eve Online is slowly increasing:

    eve.coldfront.net/status/tranquility

The Revelations II expansion had relatively subtle improvements, but the Revelations III patch will have the DX 10 graphics overhall. This is an obvious improvement, so maybe the number of players will increase more rapidly after this.

CCP are trying to improve the server every couple of weeks to prevent lag. So things are moving in the right direction, IMHO.

  • Agricola1Agricola1 Member UncommonPosts: 4,977

It was a nice video but I didn't hear any promises of it being introduced into the game, unless you count the title on the website saying " station ambulation in 2008 you heard it here first!" which I count as over enthusiasum. It's the same with atmospheric flight being "promised" and so forth, I don't think CCP as ever promised either. Since many of their promised features never make it to live anyway I seriously doubt this one has any hope atleast in this decade. Hilmar made a very nice video ....... BFD when it's in the game I'll believe it not before, until now station ambulation is what it's always been. A load of talk with CCP refusing to confirm that it will go live anytime soon.

People logging on goes up after a patch/expansion but unlike previously it doesn't keep ascending at a break neck pace. When I first started playing EVE it had 50k subs and the record was about 5 or 6k online at once. However the subs increased steadily over two years until it got to about 200k and the online record was being broken every weekend or atleast every other weekend. I don't see that happening now, I believe that the server reached full capacity long ago. The hardware changes did bugger all, in fact lag got worse and crashes became more frequent with the trend persisting rather than getting better. CCP are no doubt doing all they can but it doesn't seem to be helping, those large battles haven't been possible for more than a year. I know many have a great belief in the new upgrades but so did many concerning the hardware upgrades, the promises didn't become reality. It seems that without great technical improvements (hardware and software) EVE is stuck, perhaps this is the largest factor in the stagnation. Also CCP are screwed as the skill system makes opening another server outside of China a very difficult proposal, it might work but then again it might not. I see that the techniology they're using has hit it's cap coupled with the horrendous database problems they seem to get things like station ambulation and atmospheric flight and faction warefare and player owned sentry guns are pretty far from their minds.

It's still a niche game, don't be a fool. It can't possibly progress endlessly at the same pace as it used to, that's a given.

Agreed tho that they really need to do something about their software. Sadly they decided to make the game the way it is and it requires massive numbers to do anything. Now if only it worked propely. :/

  • Agricola1Agricola1 Member UncommonPosts: 4,977

With 200k subs I would no longer consider EVE a niche game, a few years ago it was a small title that people believed catered to a niche market. Really it was just lack of advertising, it was never a niche market just a poorly marketed game.

People carp about graphics, lag and other things that will "kill" EVE

I have but one thing to say to them:  Ultima Online is still here 12 years later.   Over 11 years since people first started predicting it's demise.

I still love UO but... guess what... EVE is better.

I don't see EVE dying anytime in the near or even middle ranged future.  EVE has a long long life ahead of it.  Only thing that can kill EVE is CCP at this point.  And only by physically shutting it down.  I don't see that happening.

And if Ultima Online isn't a good enough indicator.... try looking at EverQuest ... which is still alive and kicking.... or Anarchy Online (still alive and kicking)..

Well if the end is 10+ years down the road, I'm ok with that :)

Who would have thought gate camping would be so popular , amazing really don't you think?

i think i may start a new mmorpg titlled ,    --GATE CAMP ONLINE FOR PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY GOT  SKILLS--  it's sure to be a hit!

Any tactic that gives you and your teammates an advantage is a good thing. Be patient and use a scout. Even gatecamps have proven a bad idea for me in Tribute except for the M-OEE8 defense.

II agree the early advertising was pretty poor.

Also concerning the need to increase the hardware to fix lag [in your previous post] They are buying more ramsans which are aparently the best you can get on the retail market. So who knows oone day the whole server may be on ramsans.

EVE will only end when players get bored. Have they really added anything in the last 3 expansions? New graphics, maybe a few minor features and new ships...nothing ground breaking at all. I was disappointed when i hear Rev III was yet another grapics expansion. I think it's dumb to pay the monthly fee for more and more stupid updated graphics on ships.

Gameplay > Graphics. I think they are wasting time. I'd rather them add more depth to the game, rather than making it look shiny.
